Ep 74 The Northampton Arm | Fit New Accumulator Tank & Narrowboat Batteries Fail

  • After our first week out on the cut and we are not sure we are cut out for the rigours of narrowboat life outside the confines of a marina!
We travel up Northampton Arm and at the very first lock we get tangled in someones discarded curtains, Glenn has to tackle the weed hatch to get us going again. Once safely up the arm, we have to change the accumulator tank after Glenn spotted a leak the night before we left. Once that is sorted we then have problems managing our power, the possible culprits are tired batteries or alternator.
    A Life Full of Meaning
Welcome to A Life Full of Meaning. We sold our house and got rid of all our possessions. We currently live on a narrowboat called Nutshell and we are trying to create a more meaningful life. We love spending time with our family, including our six grandchildren.
Our video is not exclusively a 'narrowboat channel', it is a weekly vlog of our life, on and off board Nutshell, which we love sharing with our friends and family.

Good to see you out on the canal cruising. I hope you get all the boat issues sorted soon.
I was on a short break on a hire boat last week and was down the weed hatch , had sunshine , heavy rain etc but nevertheless had a lovely time. Look forward to your next episode 😉

Hi. Did you have to drain off all the water before removing the accumulator, or just turn off the pump and open the taps? I've got to do the same job on mine soon ... Thanks.

Oh dear, what a week! I’m sorry to hear your father has been unwell and it must be so worrying for your mother. My parents are 88 and 89 and have been together over 60 years. My mother was unwell during the week and started to panic so my father called 999. They were lovely and established what was wrong, they then arranged for a nurse to visit the house to check she was OK. Unfortunately I’m at our flat in London helping my father in law after my mother in law passed away last month. He’s completely lost. They started going out when they 14 and 15 and had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. It’s so heartbreaking watching your parents grow old and become vulnerable. We just have to help and support them while we are lucky enough to be able to do so. It certainly puts your “life full of meaning” into perspective. Bad luck with the boat but I’m inclined to agree with Glenn on the electrics being affected by the landline. We had two sets of new batteries last year. 1 set of AGMs at the beginning of the year when we got the new inverter and solar panel fitted. They failed in the summer when out cruising so we got a new set of ordinary batteries to replace them. There are a lot of jobs on boats and because me and my husband and are not handy we unfortunately had to pay someone to do them! Glenn is a star, he can turn his hand to anything. Hopefully next week is better for you both and you can enjoy your cruise. Thanks for sharing your week, especially when you had so much to do. I love following your channel and it’s great to see you out on the canal, Glenn seems to be handling the 70 foot no problem now.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother in law, and sorry to hear that your mum was unwell too. It sounds like a difficult time for you. I agree, it is difficult watching our parents grow old. Glenn has a funeral to go to on Tuesday then we are going to get underway 'proper' as we are still moored at Stoke Bruerne!
