  • E19 Weekly Vlog of our Narrowboat Travels UK Edition. This week in the UK, Wendy shows you how she managed to paint an enormous artwork in the Nutshell. She put the Doddle parcel service to the test and explored the beautiful River Nene Walk along the canal and also had a little sticky beak around Northampton.

    You are the perfect counterpoint to CruisingTheCut. He tentatively plans a route so it avoids and rivers -> you head out onto the Thames when it's in flood. He makes a video about very carefully laying a fire -> you open the door and throw the coal in. Keep it up.

    Hope you're enjoying your time back here in blighty Wendy, ( I would say you are ). I've spent some time down in Aus, got quite a lot of family and old friends from here down there, great I love it, but home for me is London and England and Britain and I'm happiest here. I even like the winters and the cold and the British rain etc etc, ha, ha, what a contrast compared to Queensland, ( I lived there for a time, back in the 80s ). Thanks and although you're doing a fine job I'm looking forwards to Magnus returning and looking forwards to watching more of those legendary vids, thanks again mate, thanks.

    Hi Wendy. Happy you are enjoying life in Northampton. The marina in Beckets Park has only been there for a couple of years. Hope the building work for the new university is not too disturbing. Thank you for the great videos. It is interesting seeing Northampton from somebody elses perspective.

      @LifeinaNutshell  7 років тому

      Hi Sharon. The marina is wonderful. The people are delightful and it's kept spotlessly clean and beautiful. I don't find the building works disturbing, but I have swapped kookaburras, geckos and green tree frog morning noises for geese and ducks! Same, same, but different. All lovely. I am enjoying watching the little goslings growing up. Northampton is a great place to be moored. It has everything. W

    Hi. From memory, I think the metal container for coal is called a coal scuttle. For shaking the ash out of the fire, I believe there is a small lever at the front of the fire at the bottom where the door to the ash tray is. I believe you put the same metal handle into it and shake it rapidly from right to left. This avoids the ash from flying out into the room. Give the ash a few minutes to settle then open the door to the ash container and with the same handle you pull out the ash can. This method allows you to also shake out the ash from a fire that is already lit. I hope this makes sense.

      If you're staying & keeping the boat (I thought you'd both gone back to Australia), re the ash, try looking at a Tippy ash box. They're a bit pricey, but you can keep it inside because the lid stops the air from getting in therefore combustion stops so no CO. www.tippyash.co.uk/

    • @LifeinaNutshell
      @LifeinaNutshell  7 років тому

      Hi Judi. Thank you. Good question re post. It's taken me a while to get to grips with the various ways to get parcels delivered. I've set up a Doddle account which is situated in the Morrisons supermarket. You can order online and get the parcels delivered there and it's free for pick up for some parcels. Only a nominal fee for others. I have just arranged for a parcel to be sent to an Amazon locker in the same complex, so I'll be testing out how that system goes. Other options are to get parcels sent to some post offices. I'll be doing more painting over the next few weeks. W

    • @LifeinaNutshell
      @LifeinaNutshell  7 років тому +2

      Hi Mark. I tend to work in acrylics and mixed media. The Sydney painting was all done in acrylics. I have just completed a Roses and Castles weekend workshop at Stoke Bruerne which used matt enamels. I'll be playing around with the narrowboat themes but possibly in folk art acrylic paint instead. I'll be sharing how I get on with that. Down the track the idea is to paint the back doors of Nutshell with roses and castles and the ash bucket and perhaps a few other bits and pieces that are begging to be adorned. W

    Hi Wendy, Thanks to you and Magnus for sharing your experiences aboard, and your love of beer! I've loved catching up on all your vlogs,
    I came across 'Life in a Nutshell' via CtC. I'm in the process of selling up to move onto a narrowboat, so doing loads of homework atm. I'll be boating on my own, and have been advised to get nothing bigger than a 57'er but I'd like a space like your studio for my books/studying etc, and can't find anything that size. I seem to recollect Nutshell was 70'and you didn't have much experience - but you both seem very proficient and confident right from the start. Did you have any problems with a boat that size that you haven't mentioned in your vlogs? Also I notice you're now moored up in a marina, but if it had been you going back to Oz, would Magnus be confident cruising single handed? Thanks Cindy

    • @LifeinaNutshell
      @LifeinaNutshell  7 років тому

      Hi Pelham. Thanks for your lovely comment. Nutshell is 70ft and we really enjoy having the extra space. It's a bit like having a shed at the back of the boat. Magnus has had loads of sailing and power boat experience. I went on a couple of narrowboat holidays as a child and loved it. We also took our family on a week's narrow boating holiday many years ago. We haven't had any problems with a boat this size. You just have to think ahead a little more perhaps. Magnus often drives Nutshell and does the locks by himself if I am in the cabin doing something. He is a very confident single handed cruiser. She has bow thrusters which makes a huge difference to the ease of manoeuvring her. Hope that helps. W

    • @pelhamhall9099
      @pelhamhall9099 7 років тому

      Thanks so much Wendy for all that. I probably won't get a boat quite that long but I don't feel too fazed about things either. I will be getting some Helmsman lessons but when the teacher has already recommended I stay to 57' I have to be certain with my decision to go longer! In fact - I'm going to go and book my 1st lesson now!
      Are you going to Crick - if I see you can I come and say hello please?

    • @cookinginanutshell1987
      @cookinginanutshell1987 7 років тому

      Hi Marilyn. I think it would be a good idea to go to a boat show and have a look at a range of boats, to find out which layout you prefer, the look, the feel and the age, etc. It also helped us tremendously to join Facebook groups and watch UA-cam videos on narrow boating and related subjects to get an idea about everything. Plus, lots of Google searching and reading. Then when you are ready to take the plunge, you will be well informed. W

    You know I'm only about 1+1/2 hours away from Northampton Wendy. If you really get stuck needing coal lifted etc. give me a bell.
