We're starting the new year in good spirits and are ready for the next chapter, we're doing a self build campervan :) Scary but exciting and if anyone feels like they have some advice, we're all ears!
Doing a van build was always something we fancied but never thought it would actually happen to be honest, but here we are (slightly late to the party!) and ready to make our van life dreams a reality! Can we build a van with no experience and a tight time frame of 6 weeks? Keep watching to find out..

Warm the floor tiles up with a heat gun to remove them. It softens the glue.
I insulated the floor walls and ceiling. The walls and ceiling had a vapor barrier between the insulation and the plywood. Also make sure to seal the joints with foil tape.
I have done a van build series on UA-cam which may be helpful.
Good luck with the build guys.

Im Electrical Engineer, make sure all electrical cable runs, are laid inside flexible plastic kopex, for better protection from damage, protection from any condensation and heat, you should also only use electrical cable that its insulation has high resistance to heat! Because temperatures in spain can hit over 50 c, your cables should also be run between the van insulation and interior, dont run electrical cable circuits, that are run against the metal bodywork of the van, or cables begetting cooked from hot sunshine, you can later get short circuit or fire in u van.
Use temperature resistant cables for cable runs!

As mentioned already, warm the tiles up. Heat gun would be preferable or a hair dryer on hot. Our two year old build (not the van he’s a pensioner!) is bone dry. Insulate, vapour barrier then ply line all round. Make sure to get adhesive foil tape on every seam. One tip is too make sure to insulate and barrier the bulk head. It is an area prone to condensation. Please, please open the front up and ad swivel chairs. The amount of space and the views in the evening make it worthwhile.

Happy New Year! It's good to see you that positive!
There are two ways of insulating a van. According to youtube videos an “English way“ and a “German way“. The English way is to put some puffy stuff to the wall. Here a vapor barrier is necessary because otherwise the humidity would condense on the cold metal and the puffy stuff would become soggy.
The “German way“ is to glue the foamy stuff fully to the metal, like you have. There is just no possibility that humidity can condense on the metal. Therefore I wouldn't install a vapor barrier. The problem with VP's is, they have to be REALLY airtight, otherwise humidity is possibly trapped.
You WILL have condensation, it's better to have ventilation everywhere, that these spots can dry out.
All the best for you in 2024! And happy van building! Enjoy, it's fun! Some people have quitted van traveling because they liked van building better...

  • @robbbulletwallah5202
    @robbbulletwallah5202 5 місяців тому

If youre thinking of putting in a vapour barrier - the vapour has to go somewhere - it turns to water. Which is why they use it in houses etc. Dont trap the water inside your van, it will respond to gravity and rot the floor out.

You could use a beal off lose RockWool for the beams, you take pieces "it's a kind of hairy/fluffy" to push this in-between the beams.
Foam is more permanent but wil also be a good insulation, not a very dense kind but the one that leaves some air bubbles inside.
Important is not create a cold-britch, if the density of the insulation becomes to great cold ore heat can come trough.
The armafles looks quite good, if tis is 19mm that's great, also this has small air bubbles inside you don't want to put permanent pressure on this. The small bubbles blow up and de working becomes useless
Aluminum Tape is your biggest friend, great stuff 😀
I hope this small tips will help you
Good wishes to you both, really enjoy your UA-cam channel

Fit plywood strips about 120mm width on the metal roof, wall spars, they will make strong and easy to find fixing point to screw into. Don't Bury cable runs. Run plastic truncking inside cupboards and seating etc. Makes it easy to repair and add extra stuff.

Hi guys, happy new year :) I think it's a great idea to go with ply or tongue and groove, it will look really nice and cosy and homely. For my day van I'm sticking with ply because I like the look, and I'm going to have peg board ply in the back half so I can easily hang different hooks etc. Tongue and groove might work well for you though, because I imagine it would be easier to get behind to change electrics and plumbing if you wanted to in the future, idk. A lot of professional conversions (certainly the vws I've looked at) do use carpet on walls and ceiling, personally I dont like the look/feel of it, but it's definitely a "normal" thing to do!
Re tv shows and films, I could recommend some things, but it depends what sort of stuff you're into? I've been exploring some of the Asian dramas on netflix; there are some great Indian shows, and now I'm getting into Chinese dramas, and I also like anime, so if any of that sounds interesting I can give you some recs - but it's not everyone's cup of tea!

Best tool for removing the tiles is an oszillator tool. And very useful for many other tasks, like plunge cuts, cut a bit of metal off and so on. In many situations it's the 'problem solver'.
You could also cut a slit in the tiles with a circular or plunge saw (or the oszillator tool) along the lines to get to the screws. Depth of cut adjusted to the thickness of the tiles.
Or a sharp wide chisel and a mallot

  • @ourworldonwheels
    @ourworldonwheels 5 місяців тому +2

Tool wise, I’d definitely recommend getting a pocket hole jig ( Kreg good brand) plus if you can afford it a track saw. Those 2 tools have really made things easier for me 👍🏼
About a vapour barrier. I’m sure you’ve done your research but unless you can 100% seal it with zero gaps it’s not worth doing and actually worse as once moisture gets past it it’s much harder to get rid of.
I’ve chosen to do one myself.
For insulation I started with closed cell foam ( like you have) directly to the inner steel skin, on top of that I have the PIR insulation board on the large areas and recycled plastic bottle insulation ( that doesn’t hold water, rockwool or standard house insulation holds water so don’t use that unless it’s all you have) in the fiddly bits and cavities.
On top of that is the vapour barrier with about 500m of foil tape!lol ..make sure to buy about 3x more if that than you need!!
The more insulation over the cab roof area the better, due to the shape if you get condensation there it runs down the inside of the windscreen so I’d double up there.
If you’ve got a heat gun or even powerful hair dryer warm the floor up in sections to loosen the glue that would help.
When it comes to further on in the build with electrics I can hopefully be more helpful as that’s my trade.
Plus this is only my second van build!ha VW t5 1st then long wheelbase sprinter now as it’s both of us 👍🏼
Happy new year to the 4 of you , hope any of the above helps 😊
    Ant

You guys are so funny! and lovely and fun to watch. now....as to the tree/decorations. Usually they're done by now, typically January 1 is when I would be taking everything down. However, this year, we have a live tree and have had it almost a month and it still smells wonderful! So I decided to leave it up. Plus, there's still water in the bucket underneath it and I'd rather it be empty or close to empty before we move it across the living room and our trash picks them up next week so no big rush. So it's a slow put-away this year. Fun to see the van build starting! And the tool belt is a sign of a husband who knows his wife, love it!! It's a perfect gift! Happy new year!

Great to see you guys and Happy New Year to you both (and the boys)! 🥂🎉 So looking forward to seeing the van build. Wonderful walks and scenery you have nearby (brilliant videoing with the drone btw) and loved watching the boys playing by the water 🐕🐾🥰🥰 You're both so lovely and always make me smile. Watching your videos brightens my day, especially at this time of year. Take care and enjoy the van build journey. Love from the north of Scotland xx❤🐾

I've removed similar tiles by heating sections of the floor/tiling up with a heat gun, softens the glue and makes removal so much easier. Good luck. 😊

You need to insulate the floor, and use vinyl snap in flooring ( that looks like wood- I used a gray shade) super easy to sweep and clean - good for the doggos

Love your humour and positivity Nick & Sarah. Good luck with the unbuild and rebuild… alot of work but a chance to put your own character into Venton. Looking forward to watching that unfold. 💕
With regard to the ‘date for taking decorations down’, some traditionalists go for the Twelfth night, which works out as either the 5th or 6th of January.
Wishing you and your doggies good health and every happiness for 2024. xx🐾🐾
