Heat and Moisture WITHOUT a Humidifier?? CPAP HME Filters Explained
Вставка

- Heat and moisture are vital when it comes to CPAP sleep therapy to avoid common side effects like a dry airway. But did you know that you don't need a CPAP machine with a humidifier to enjoy warm air as you breathe into your CPAP mask? Heat and Moisture Exchange filters - or HME filters - use the heat and moisture in your own breath during exhalation to reintroduce that when you inhale. These are commonly used with travel CPAP devices like the ResMed AirMini or the Transcend Micro where humidifiers would add too much size and weight for a portable device.
HME filters can have brand names like HumidX (ResMed) or AirMist (Transcend) but their functionality is the same. Note, that you will not receive the same level of heat and moisture when using a HME filter over a CPAP machine with a designated humidifier, but it will make a noticeable difference against therapy without any form of humidity introduction.

Thanks for your great video. I have a Breas Z-2 and wondered if I could use the Transcend Air Mist filters with my Breas. I like the fact that the Transcend filter can be replaced and continue to use the plastic casing.
Thank you for watching! The AirMist HME is only compatible with the Transcend Micro.
Thank you for the prompt feedback!!
my AirMini P10 mask developed a new issue recently the air flow from the HME is significantly higher (noisier) than normal and in the past. I changed to brand new mask, hose, and HumidX but the issue remains. On occasion I can move the hose and nose pillow around then I hear/feel is suction and the air flow from HME goes back to normal (quiet). I am puzzled by this and have no resolution. Your thoughts?
Hi, thank you for watching! Have you tried checking your P10 nasal pillow to make sure the the nasal pillow tips haven't been pushed in? This can happen sometimes. If you're not sure, compare the nasal pillows to a spare/new nasal pillow to see if the tips are the same shape.
@@RespShop yes, I am aware of this common issue with the pillows. I also tried brand new pillow in two different sizes just to rule out the pillow. I am puzzled....
@@HiFiInsider Sorry that didn't help... we haven't heard of this issue before...If you figure this out, can you please share your answer here with us and everyone? thank you!
@@RespShop will do!
Hi there! Thank you for the helpful info. Is there any HME that may be used with a Resmed airsense 10 machine and a f40 (just started using this), an f30 or f20 mask? My mouth gets so bone dry even with humifification tank and mouth taping. It would be wonderful to have a better humidification experience… Also can you use an HmE along with your filled water tank? Thanks so much!
Hi, thank you for watching! It's not recommended to use a HME with a humidifier because the HME is no longer effective when wet. There'll be too much moisture going into the HME if you use it with a humidifier. If you open your mouth with the F40 you might want to try a larger cushion size. Or try a chin strap and nasal pillow mask combo. The chin strap will keep your mouth closed and nasal pillow masks are very compact.
I use an AirMini while traveling and a Philips Dreamwear mask where the hose attaches at the top of the head. I have no doubt I could assemble the connectors needed to install an HME up there where it connects to the mask, but would that be too far away from my mouth to do any real good?
Thanks for watching! It won't be as effective since the HME is further away from your nose and mouth but you can still give it a try. Some of our customers find that setup gives them enough humidification.
Do you know if you can use a V-com with an HME - or do you have to pick humidity or reduced noise level? Currently struggling to get my AirMini usable, because it's so loud on the inhale. Thanks!
It is either or. HME does not attach to v-com. Tips - masks where the tube attaches on top of your head increase the noise. Be sure not to keep unit near you. Tuck in drawer of side table.
@RespShop Thanks! It's not the machine itself that is loud - somehow it's the air moving through the tube on inhale.
so what humidifier can i use with my GREAT overhea resmed i30 mask
Which machine do you have?
Are there any nasal pillow masks that come apart near the mask to add a generic HME in there?
Unfortunately, the generic HME only fits between the hose and the mask. Nothing between the mask frame and the adapter of the mask. Unless you have the airmini. Which the Aifit P10 and the HumidX is closer to the nasal adapter.
The HME need the exhaled air to collect the humidity, but, the exhaled air will go out through the exhalation port in the mask!
So, how the HME will work?!
Thank you for watching! When you breathe out, the exhaled air fills the mask and backs up into the CPAP hose and then it is vented out through the exhalation port(s) in your mask when you inhale so the HME will be able to capture some of the exhaled air.
Strange the air mist HME housing needs replacement after 3 months even though it can be cleaned.
Thank you for watching! That's the manufacturer's "recommended replacement frequency" :)
HME filters can be used in top of head hose?
Yes, it can but it may not be as effective b/c it's further away from your nose and mouth. Thanks for watching!
@@RespShop thanks for reply!!
Creates too much moisture.
