As a Swiss person, I can totally confirm that with 1$ (or 1 CHF), you won't get far! You can maybe buy a candy or a small piece of bread (pain au lait) for that cost... but that's pretty much it! XD
And yeah, we have higher income than some other countries, but everything is very expensive, so the average person here is not rich (contrary to what a lot of people around the world believe). Just thinking of the price of rent (which is arround 1/3 of a monthly salary) and health insurance (which is mandatory for everyone here and cost 300$ or more per month/adult) makes me dizzy!
To take your example of McDonald's Big Mac, a McDonald menu here costs around 12$.
Well, I live in Poland and I have to pay 230 USD montly for health insurance which is mandatory as well. It also depends on your salary, so if you are not working then it's free and if you earn something then you pay 9% of your salary for health care. It's also known to be so bad that lots of people pay for private health care so in my case it's about 250 USD.
Big Mac here is about 2.70$ so it's pretty cheap. On the other hand, price of average rent (40m 2 rooms) is around 500$ and that's 2/3 of average salary. If you work in McDonalds, then you'll have about 340$ monthly to spend so you can eat two Big Macs daily and rend a room.

We've been getting eggs for 99 cents a dozen right here in Ohio, for the last couple of months. Granted, this is an abnormally good deal and probably represents some kind of lowest-price competition between the various grocery store chains in the area. Similarly, we've also been getting milk for $1.99 a gallon, since some time before Christmas. We don't know how much longer this will last.
