A window of opportunity came for me to test myself and take the Vstrom camping about 100km away from home - and it was hell windy! Being fairly new to road bikes and a cautious rider anyway, I still feel quite uneasy riding at highway speeds, and especially in stiff winds. Well I started the desensitising experience with this trip. Not the most exciting, camp wise, being solo - I did find it a little boring, but a little accomplishment that I can tick off.

Good video mate... I used to have wind phobia and with time I am much better at managing it. Main thing is counter stear and also putting your knee out against the wind helps keep the bike on track.. just becareful when you pass by trucks as that creates a vacuum and can sometimes throw you off.. so yeah, counter stear and be aware of your surroundings.
I have the same bike with a similar setup and have been doing many long rides.. really enjoy every bit of the ride and the bike.
Ride safe mate and hope to see more of your adventures on the Strom..

Thanks for the reply mate, great info there. As you said, I think the fear will ease with time.

Great job on the vid Jason. The wind can really make riding horrible but the more you do it you will be more confident. I ride most weekends and do about 250 k trips and I still get sore as. I always carry ibuprofen just in case. Great camp set up the stretcher makes a big difference to sleep quality. Cheers mate.

You're right, the Vstrom handled it really well - even better than normal with the panniers on, I just need to get out on it more often.

Great video and topic. I had a bit of the wind phobia when I got back to riding a few years ago. I found just riding in the centre of the lane gave me adequate time to adjust when a gust hit. The other realisation I had was that the wind hitting me directly in front of me is at about 100km/h. If I ever feel too uncomfortable, I can just pull over.

Cheers mate, I set out to see how it felt, was ready to turn back if it got too uneasy. It was more quarter-on wind, so not as bad as full crosswind. I think the more I do it, and build up, the more natural it'll feel.... it's funny when I watch you guys doing hand gestures while talking comfortably at 100km/h 😄

    Looked like a good getaway.
I've nearly been blown over several times while sitting at lights. Worst experience was when I was still on P's riding a very light full faired RZ250 in strong cross winds.

Yeah, your crazy Melbourne weather would be my nightmare 🤣 funny how the fears have kicked in now, when I was younger - no worries 🙃

To combat wind from the side I was told to put my wide side knee out to form a deflection to pull me back into the wind.
    Seems to work.

Cheers mate, have tried it in quick spurts on other rides. Wasn't sure if it helped or not - might give it another go

@@AdvHQ For Colorado summer, we ride the high altitude trails to stay cool. I cannot ride two wheels on ice or snow.

Yeah, the panniers are awesome. Only had camera gear in top box, and a very small dry bag with clothes/pillow on the seat... bloody awesome!
