Living in China | How is it like living in Shenzhen in 2020

- This is a video I made about the way I feel and I see Shenzhen.
Shenzhen is an incredible city to live in, I’ve been here for five years now.
It’s very green, it has trees everywhere, a lot of parks and greenery in every avenue and street.
It’s also super modern, it feels like you are living in the future.
The city is also very convenient to live in.
But of course like every big metropolis in the world it could get a little bit noisy sometimes.
One of the main issues that I have while living here was the language barrier,
because here nobody speaks English, so everywhere I was going I was just using the translator on my phone, trying to communicate with people. Eventually I started learning some Mandarin, but that was kind of frustrating because Chinese is definitely not easy, I thought I knew how to say something and then they couldn’t get anything.
And at the same time I was not understanding anything of what they were saying, it was a tough process. Right now I don’t really speak mandarin fluently but I manage basic language and I can communicate on a daily basis.
Despite all these issues that I had with the language, I have to say that Chinese people are very friendly people, when you are living here as a foreigner they are always nice to you, at least that was my experience, and that made the difference to choose between staying or leaving.
Yes, it’s definitely not easy to adapt to such a different culture, but after all it’s totally worth it.
People is nice, food is delicious, the quality of life is really good and living in a city like Shenzhen in such an important time for China and the World makes you feel very special, like a main character of a movie, well that’s the way I feel.

Shenzhen only 30 years ago was a village in the backyard of Hong Kong. Now, look at the city!! Rich, modern, clean and vibrant.
Absolutely!!
@@RafaGoesAround I don't know why but I love china. There's something in Chinese history that melts my heart. The country was so explored, broke and mistreated by European countries, the US and Japan throughtout the 19th and 20th centuries BUT never stopped fighting for its freedom. And it's a very misunderstood country by Western people indeed. Love ya from Brazil!!
@@bjkina Hong Kong is paying the price of some of its so-called "citizens" that are just agents paid and infiltrated by the US government on Hk to destabilized China's government and its economy. They scream for freedom but it's just a maneuver from the US secret agencies to curb Chinese economic growth and prevent the country's technological advance. The US government can no longer even disguise its dissatisfaction with the Chinese advance.......... So stay strong CHINA❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Karan Jeet Singh It’s well known that cia is trying to overthrow countries that they don’t like. The USA has a very long history of invading and trying to cause unrest in many countries.
Now look at NYC crime ridden and dirty in 30 years lol pathetic
Moving to Shenzhen in October for work once the borders open! Can't wait!
Yes, it is an awesome city! Tho I've heard they might not open the borders this year!
I heard from the school hiring me that they might or might not. Still undecided. It's just a waiting game now!!
Amy Clarke hopefully they open, i start uni in september there 😭😭😭 i cant wait
@@Maria-ki7ze I know me neither! I have been waiting since February to come to Shenzhen! Congratulations 👏!!
set yourself to learning the language or you might fall into the expat trap. you go there for a year so you say to yourself meh not worth the effort. ... 10 years later you will still be there but still wont be able to integrate cuz you keep puting it off.
Shenzhen is one of my favorite cities in China
Same here!
im japanese live in dalian, China, dalian is very good city, but shenzhen looks stunning!!!
Shenzhen really is a beautiful metropolis. Thanks for the comment!
Used to called Manchukuo 👎👎👎🇯🇵🇯🇵🇯🇵
Dalian is very good, a romantic city, very clean and high life qulity. Shenzhen is more developed, and much better on green & public garden & EV vehicles.

Yes! Me too!
Actually, as far as I know, ALL cities in China are very green. I've been to probably close to 30 cities in China.
Waoo.. the city look so clean n organise. Bravo!!
It certainly is! Keep tuned for more content!
This video was filmed fantastically plus the BGM, and I lived in SZ almost 2 years, it s one of most green, modern , high-tech and convinent city in China. I recommend you to join in some communities to improve your Chinese, Chinese are so polite and friendly, hope it helps!
Thanks for the advise, I will keep it in mind. I am glad you liked the video. More content about Shenzhen to come. Keep tuned!
OMG you literally replied every single comment! So humble and nice for you. I am gonna subscribe :) BTW Shenzhen is stunning.
hey thanks for the support!

Chinese is easy. It starts difficult but will get easier and easier. Because every character has meanings, once you manage to memorize 1000 characters, words are just made of characters and will make sense to you automatically. There is not much grammar, no tenses, plural forms... etc
I will retake my studies starting from today! Thanks for the support!
As a Chinese, I think speak Chinese is not hard, and we almost don't have any grammar
Truth
It is easy to do some easy conversation but hard to use it properly.

Hi Rafa, I just ran into your channel and love your content, going back to your first videos and catch up to current content. Very professional videos, ty.
Thank you for sharing this video, It is my home city, looks beautiful!
shenzhen was my hometown before my family moved to nz. over the years i watched it grow and grow. i'm so shocked at the rate of how fast things are changing constantly.
Shenzhen grows unlike New Zealand huh
La producción de este vídeo estuvo simplemente fantástica. 👌🏼 ¡Me dieron ganas de viajar!
Muchas gracias! Que bueno que te gusto!
This looks amazing....thanks for this video...I would like to live there a couple of months. I can't believe you've been there for 5 years

Wao Rafa. El vídeo tiene una calidad extraordinaria...Sin desperdicio el contenido. Todo muy interesante y las tomas son hermosas! Un trabajo fantástico! Ya quiero ver más 😍😍😍
Muchas gracias Luis! Siguiendo tus pasos 🙏🏼
The footage is great! Welcome to Shenzhen.
Thank you!
My family live in Shenzhen but my parents can only speak Mandarin Chinese. Sometimes, they come across some people asking them questions in English and they feel very upset for not being able to help them because of the language barrier. I know this because we often discuss this at diner time haha. And every time after they experience this, they would learn English for one or two days passionately...
There are still a few people who speak basic English, or if they know a couple words they will do their best to help! I always appreciate that! Your parents are so sweet trying to learn English! Say hello for me!
your video is awesome! I love it so much!👍🏻❤️it's a very impressive city!
Thanks for updating this video which really makes my day. Hope that this will also change the bias towards China. I live in Shenzhen also. Shenzhen is a fabulous place to chase my dream. It is the place that I have grow a lot. Now I am also in charge of VE market in my company. What a small world~😄
I have lived in Shenzhen in the past, and I will probably return there this summer . Great vlog bro keep it up
Thanks! This is a wonderful city!!
Never realized how good my city is until I moved to Canada😂 great video btw!!!
Thanks a lot
Ho Lam do I have to? lol
@Ho Lam this response right here is why China despite having 1.3 billion people, has almost no large immigrant population compared to the United States and Canada. stay isolated, wumao. the world will thank you :)
@Animason 👎, calling people “Wumao” is a signature characteristic of a real paid troll. Cos it was invented by your supervisors to discredit whoever disagree with you.
65 million international visitors went to China in 2019.
150 million Chinese travelled abroad in the same period.
Millions expats work and live in China. The government does not give away citizenship. The most they can get is green card and it is very difficult to obtain. But it is pointless to tell you the poor little troll who does not even have a passport nor a brain.
Fantastic video and good portray of a most vibrant city in China.
Many thanks!
Great video, I did an internship there for a couple months in 2019, I stayed in Nanshan and loved going to Seaworld and CoCo Park on the weekends
Great video man. I love this city too!
Thanks my friend! 👍🏼
Un video muy bien hecho, buenas tomas, súper nítido, se pueden apreciar los colores y lo que quieres proyectar de la ciudad... Felicitaciones

Fantastic, love your video, and love our city-ShenZhen❤️
Thank you!! Shenzhen is an awesome city!
Yes, it's really an objective and realistic video, many similar feelings with you. Besides, very well organized and wonderful editing.
Fantastic and marvelous video.
Hello from SZ👋 It’s pretty interesting for me to see the city in this view haha. I never thought that it’s a challenge for foreigners live here , but now I realized, yeah a lot of places don’t have English signs😅 But still, hope you enjoy your life here!😁
I do enjoy my life in Shenzhen a lot! Thanks for the comment!
I like Shenzhen a lot too. There are many very nice places in China. I would also recommend Hangzhou (杭州) and Qingdao (青島) if you haven't been there before.
For the people in HK, another place I would recommend is a weekend trip to Huizhou (惠州) next to Shenzhen. I stayed in a small guest house literally right beside the "Little West Lake" (小西湖). It was seriously refreshing to get up very early in the morning for a morning walk along the Little West Lake and watch the sunrise. And along the lake, you will occasionally bump into people exercising and dancing and playing ancient musical instruments. Very NICE !!
Thanks a lot for the suggestions!! I might go there to explore soon!
impressive shots! and overall quality of this video!
Glad you like our Country and glad to see your video in the same city. Good videos.
Thanks! 😃

Based in Shanghai. Have been thinking of moving to SZ. This video gave me a very good view. Thank you. Enjoy your life there!
Thanks! I have a couple more videos about the city, you can check. Shenzhen is great for living. Cheers!
Shanghai has better nightlife imo. Also a much larger expat community. More locals can speak English as well.
Great video! Shenzhen looks so modern, clean and cool as many other cities in China. I'm honestly not expecting to ever have the chance to move there but at least I would love to visit this amazing country some day. Keep uploading these kind of videos. You now have a new subscriber.
Pd. My only complain is that you put those Spanish subtitles... I'm Mexican and I'm trying to enhance my English (listening) skills but (inevitably) looking at them is not helping me at all hahaha.
Haha thanks for the support! I’m glad you like it! Well, the new videos don’t have Spanish subtitles, you can take a look, enjoy and practice your English as well. I love Mexico!
I want to work in Shenzhen one day!!

Nice takes of the city. I didnt know the sky could be so blue there.
We have many cloudy days per year, but also blue sky days are common here! I’m glad you liked it!
China’s air was its worst 2012-2013 but for some reason, people haven’t let it go. Since then, China has made major improvements in air quality.

This was great to watch, I am moving to Shenzhen as soon as lockdown etc is lifted and visas start being issued again!
Wise choice! Shenzhen is a spectacular city!
Wandering around good to hear! I’ve never been so I chose based on research!
Welcome to Shenzhen
One more thing. I love the safety.. my dauther is 12 when we travel in 2019. I have no worry at all. In China.. it is so safe.
No drugs, no gangsters, no street gangs, no honeless, everyone has to work.
Great video!! I am a doctor from Costa Rica and I have been getting gradually more and more obsessed with the idea to move to Shenzhen... I don't know yet how to start, but I just think it should be the best possible scenario for the next chapter in my life
Wonderful choice! Shenzhen is definitely a great city to live!
I like how you are being so proud of living in shen zhen, that makes you one of the shenzhener, you should be the ambassador for shenzhen.haha
Wow thanks!
As a Shenzhener, I'm very happy that you find it comfortable to live here. Actually there are many foreigners living in my neighborhood and we get on well with each other. The average age of the whole population in Shenzhen is only 30, so most people here are young, passionate and well educated. It would be easier for foreigners to adapt the living environment here than other Chinese cities. So, welcome everyone.
什么叫shenzhener?

I spend my exchange semester (2019/2020) in Shenzhen at Shenzhen university and I had such a great time there. Shenzhen does not feel like a typical Chinese city. I have been in every major Chinese city and these cities are totally different. In my opinion, Shenzhen is the best example of what China is aiming for. I highly recommend everybody who has the chance to spend some time in Shenzhen as a student/worker to go there. Great video, it really triggered some nice memories of mine =)
How are you Rafa? Thank you for the video. I see Shenzhen as my home town city. I spent 3 years at Shenzhen after college before I left to Texas.
Moving to Shenzhen once the border opens, too, business and family. There is no any subway or high speed train in Guangzhou and in Shenzhen when we left 16 years ago. It is stunning Shenzhen Speed. Very very good video.!!!
Great video! What Shenzhen needs to add is an international airport that can replace the HKG. Not many airlines go to the current SZX.
Shenzhen Baoan is already very used for domestic flights. The reason why Hong Kong has more passengers is because only a few of the western companies fly to China so you have to use a Chinese flight that is a bit more expensive: from my city to Hong Kong I would spend 1500/2000 but if I go to Shenzhen it rises to 2500
The funny thing is , inside the city CBD, Shenzhen has big piece of green land park and CBD fringe has Lychee tree mountains...
Yeah! It's my favorite CBD in China! So well made!
Yes and the funnier thing is, so many trees & parks but the air still stinks there...
Well Rafa I think you are a very lucky man, you live in a futuristic beautiful city in a friendly community, you live a safe and crime free life, everything is so clean and convenient👍
PS..another reason I think you are fortunate is because you see my tomorrows wold today.
Wow, unbelievable green n clean. 👍 well done Shenzhen
It certainly is!
woooooooow..love it..I wish to move to china..
It is an incredible country!

My favorite city. Always. Almost to settle down over there :D
Shenzhen is certainly amazing!
too stressful for me. Guangzhou suits me better
I am going to Shenzhen in July for 6 months on an Au Pair program. I'll be taking Mandarin lessons then, but I am so nervous about the language barrier! Despite that I am so excited for new opportunity, cultural immersion, and the landscapes! Thanks for this video, it made me feel even more excited!
Chinese is a foreign language. It's very difficult at first, but it will become more and more simple in the future. You have to start with Chinese pronunciation. That is, the pronunciation of initials and finals.

Moving to Shenzhen ( nanshan district) next week. Any advice? In what part of the city are you based and how is the renting there ? Thanks
Nanshan is one of the newest and best planned districts. Since more companies and people are moving there, renting is getting more expensive now, but I could say is the greenest district, it's actually my favorite district. Cheers!
About 700 USD a month for a 20 square meters apartment in Nanshan district , deposit are 3 month usually.
