The "Marcha Real" ("Royal March") is the national anthem of Spain. Under the Francoist regime, it was known as the "Marcha Granadera" ("Grenadier March"), and used adapted lyrics from José María Pemán's 1928 version. The changes intended to fit the symbols of Francisco Franco's ideology of National-Catholicism, which were the "salute with the extended right arm" and the "yoke and arrows" this last one used in the Middle Ages by Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon to represent the union of their dynasties and their kingdoms.

He was a dictator, certainly, but he was not part of the race-based form of fascism found in Germany and Italy. His attitudes towards the Jews were mixed, but in the end, when it became clear what was happening with the final solution, tens of thousands of Jews found refuge via Spain. A complicated and mixed period of history? Yes. Shame of the Spanish people? No.

A ver si me entiendes. No es muy difícil. Verás, Guzmán tiene dos raíces probablemente visigodas. Esas dos raíces, dado que el idioma de los visigodos pertenecía al tronco “germánico”, son comunes a otros idiomas germánicos. Entre ellos, entre esos idiomas, menciono y señalo que en inglés también existen esos dos morfemas. Eso no significa que la Reina Camila sea visigoda…no. Eso sería una apropiación indebida.
