West Coast Rubber teaches and shows you how a tire recycling company works. A friend of mine introduced me to the owner, Gary Kerr, and I spent an entire afternoon talking and walking through his tire plant and learning about the whole process. They're super experts and can even tell if a tire is good to be recycled by smelling the used tire! We also learned that the most difficult part of doing this work is the cost of the machines? I wouldn't doubt it because they have to be very strong and there are several steps on the recycling process. We visited the back of the plant and have some really neat things to show, especially the shredding machines.
Green facts: approximately 242 million tires are discarded every year in the Unites States alone?
    Out of these:
    - Less than 7% are recycled
    - 11% are burned for fuel
    - 5% are exported
The remaining 77% are sent to landfills, stockpiled or illegally dumped.
The end result of recycling them could be several things. Here is what West Coast Rubber talk about each of their final product:
Playground cover: known as the safest play surface on the market, GroundRubber Meets CPSC Surface Guidelines, as well as ASTM Guidelines (F-1292-99, and F-1951-99). At a depth of 6 inches, it provides the most shock absorption in playgrounds available on the market today. With GroundRubber installed, playgrounds are twice as safe as those with tan-bark, sand, pebbles and most other surfaces! Another cool fact is that it has the unique ability to reduce injuries due to falls from a critical height of over 12 feet! You can actually take an egg and drop it from a height of 12 feet and watch it bounce. They say that it might cost a little more, but it only needs to be installed once.
Landscape cover: made 100% from recycled truck tires. GroundMulch is a long lasting alternative to a natural mulch product, that will not require an annual replenishment. GroundMulch will give you many years of long lasting beauty!
Horse Arena Cover: it offers one of the safest and most resilient footings available for horses. GroundRubber can dramatically enhance the performance and comfort of your horses, and is appreciated by Dressage and Hunter Jumpers alike. GroundRubber is also odorless, and requires less watering and dragging than other footing products.
    Molded products:
Slide tiles: besides providing a slip-resistant safety surface, Groundrubber slide tiles are also easy to install and maintain.
Wheel stops: being made of rubber, they can absorb and redistribute impact, and reduce risk of damage to vehicles or property when parking. They also last longer than conventional concrete wheel stops and they are virtually maintenance free.
Anti fatigue mats: these mats provide much-needed cushioning comfort, reduce fatigue, and improve productivity for your employees. The non-skid surface is impact and chemical resistant. The underside has protruding nubs which enable air circulation and keeps the floor dry. Anti-fatigue mats are fully washable and easy to maintain, and can be cut to specific dimensions.
They all come in several different colors you can choose from. It's non-toxic and safe.
    Benefits of recycled rubber products:
    - 100% California Recycled Tires
    - Guaranteed 99.9% Steel Free
    - Excellent shock absorption
    - No Annual Replenishment
    - Does Not Attract Vermin
    - Environmentally Safe
    - Does Not Decompose
    - Helps Control Dust
    - Reduces Puddles
    - Easy to Maintain
    - Long Lasting

Gary Kerr, founder of West Coast Rubber and current partner with Mr Cameron Wright, died today at the age of 49. I sold Gary the machine in this video that has the screen on it for pulling the wire out of the tires.
Gary left behind a 13 year old and 10 year old daughter as well as a beautiful wife who is a firewoman in San Jose, CA.
    He was my friend

Hello is there a way to liquify tire rubber with a chemical or other method ? I was thinking it would be great to be able to break the tire down to a slurry and paint or coat 100's of things .

@prise984 there's a metal on the sideways part and I believe they later take it out and recycle both the metal and the remainder of the tire.

In the 1950s I had a summer job in a tire plant buffing the used tires down to the cords. The removed product was packaged and sent to the plant. Just what became of it I do not know. My recollection is that the rubber was not recyclable for tires The rubber vulcanization process chemically altered the product, but it must have been used for something or it would not have been done.

Why the recycled material can't be used to manufacture a new tire?

  • @aidenbiden5597

In this day and age we still use tarmac and concrete foot paths around retirement homes would this not be a better material too use I remember falling on this stuff in the playground it hurt but I don’t remember ever splitting my head open. But me and mates all had bad injuries from falls in other areas I split both my knees open when a kid a lot bigger then me run in to me I got rugby tackled on the rubber football cage and I got large friction burn on my face and hand but no cuts

if they get a debearing machine that uses a hook to pull the Steel out of the tire, place a few of these over a conveyor and then load them using ramps, they can make the only human interaction being loading the machine, rapidly reduces production time as they dont need to manually operate a machine

  • @robertbragg9364
    @robertbragg9364 7 років тому

how much do they charge for taking the tires? he was saying they pull 20 plus tons a day of scrap so it's obviously profitable. if it's free to drop tires or very inexpensive ie 1$ or round about 1$ this is great. either way it's great they're finding uses for such a menacing used product. in cleveland they're everywhere and I know places like detroit they're in e ery vacant lot and every empty house. they need these in ohio and Michigan everywhere. they'd make a killing and clean up our neighborhoods drastically. great idea though.

....so, kids can eat the tire and it won't affect their health?
There's currently a lot of controversy over the use of crumb rubber on school fields, so unless he's got lab results to back up his comment, I don't think he should be calling tire rubber a non toxic product that kids can eat without consequence

Something smells....literally. They put this product in a childs playground and took out the old wood chips. I live in the CA desert and this product, because of its' dark color is 5- 10 degress hotter in summer, a bit like black asphalt absorption and emission of solar heat.
When I stand downwind I get a strong whiff of obnoxious rubber smell. This is not necessarily bad, but my common sense tells me that at 2' above surface there could be lots of toxic VOC's being off-gassed. IMO this industry is full of fake studies by enviro whackos and industry trying to promote and recycle tires.... Beware.... for the childrens safety more studies need be done. Do you really trust any progressive government enviro study? Do you see a conflict of interest between progressive EPA that tries to promote recycled propucts and their so called VOC studies...I do....
