ZZT Game And Why It Drove Me To Programming
Today I wanted to talk about something that has definitely marked my early career as a software development and this is ZZT, a very old game that I used to play A LOT.
For those who don't know, ZZT was a very popular game back in 1991. According to Wikipedia, "ZZT is an ANSI character-based video game, created in 1991 by Tim Sweeney of Potomac Computer Systems, which later became Epic MegaGames in 1992 and finally Epic Games in 1999. ZZT itself is not an acronym for anything; its title was chosen so it would always appear at the bottom of newsgroup listings. Although visually outdated at the time of its release, ZZT became fairly popular because of its integration of an object-oriented scripting language known as ZZT-OOP. The language allowed community involvement that extended beyond simply creating level terrain with the built-in editor."
So, this is exactly what I wanted to talk about. How ZZT and is abilities to engage users by allowing them to build its own levels had driven me to programming.

Tim Sweeney, the guy who made Fortnite? Damn, he's really changed.

I would consider that to be an insult upon a saint of gaming.
It's not that he created the engine that a popularly mocked video game was built on...
It's that he created an engine that allowed anyone to make something. The Unreal Engine is used now used by thousands of corporate/independent game creators around the world. accessible
And ZZT was the beginning of all of that.

If you like the ASCII art you should check out Dwarf Fortress. It is a harsh mistress.

Everything good about the Unreal Engine started with ZZT.

Did you release any games? Or do you happen to have any games not on the main archive, zzt.org?

Wow! I played this when I was a kid :)
I had a shareware version of Super ZZT as well. Downloaded from a local BBS. The gaming community was pure fun at the time.
Reminds me of playing Legend of the Red Dragon and LORD 2 "online" as well haha.

I just looked up ZZT to see if anyone still talked about it or would use it in this day an age - simply because of how much fun I remember it being. I played it when I was 12 years old on a friends old 286. Pretty quickly I was designing my own levels. Such a simple interface and yet was a lot of fun- doesn't matter about flash graphics when they get it right.

We teach STEM topics including Programming and Robotics.
Can you think of other games that will help teach programming?
Especially things that will ACTUALLY teach. For example I've seen so many Minecraft "educational" programs that don't seem to teach anything. We probably don't want to teach Minecraft.

Great video! It's great to see other UA-camrs trying to resurge some new players into ZZT! I post ZZT videos frequently. Check out ZZT Ultra too. It's online and runs in browser. Also, check out Lyon by Saxxonpike. It's native Windows and simulates ZZT.

I just enjoyed some synthwave music while working out yesterday & now I'm gonna dork out on retro gaming.
If my girlfriend texts me about my horoscope mentioning nostalgia, I'll shit *BRIX*.😂😯

Good to see people still remember this game. I remember making my own levels in ZZT. It was a lot of fun and the programming was easy to follow. Maybe you can help me John, I want to get into programming and I've begun learning the basics for a few different languages; C++, Java, JavaScript, C#. But I just can't get my head around them. I have a VERY simple mind and I work A LOT with visuals which is probably why I could get my head around ZZT. Any suggestions as to which programming language to go? I'm getting kind of bored of not being able to go any further than the "Hello World" output.

I actually didn't know this game I'll have to check it out thanks. Games/Shareware inspired me to get into programming too. First thing I did was find out how to modify the asteroids bitmap file, but then I wanted to actually change the game mechanics...

Does that mean the images were all that changed? Like the shape of the blasts/bullets, for example? Or the ship? That is awesome.
