It’s kinda strange to me to ge bare feet in the winter.
We were never allowed to go bare feet or sit on the ground before we had heard the first cuckoo bird in the spring , avoiding to an old wives tale ( usually one time in May)
We try to stay in here these days .
      35 inches of snow and -22 F…
      Haven’t been so cold for 20 years🥶🥶🥶

I’m not concerned about the cold. The children now a days don’t feel it. But around a construction site where there are nails and possible sharp metal objects around?
I’m not trying to shame anyone. I’m just being a mom.

Ben, My Grandpa always went Saturdays to do his shopping. He first would go to the barbershop to get a trim and chat with his buddies and catch up on the local gossip. After that he would stop at the corner store and get a coffee & a dozen doughnuts. His third stop was to the Farmers Feed & Supply Store. He would get Bar Chain Oil, Chicken Feed, a pair of gloves if there was a sale, 3 pack of wooden matches, some milking machine hose( just in case), three reels of 5/64 cable wire for the sugarhouse chimney pipes. He would pay and head back thru the loading dock area where he had parked his truck. Back then the farmers brought in empty grain sacks. Grandpa always asked if he could grab a coulple and they always gave him as many as he needed. He used these sacks for his tree farm. He used old dried manure and compost first ,then dirt. He would plant the tree in the sack then would keep it up in the milk house because it was warm and wet. Time to plant
and he always slit the sack and planted it in the hole with the tree.

A motto I'm still trying to perfect is, "don't put it down, put it away." When I'm doing any outside project, I've learned that if I just take a few minutes and put everything back..(garden tools, water hose, buckets, project stuff etc) it keeps my yard, shed area, garden area..sooo much nicer and I don't ever have to come back and face a mess. The items don't just get that way, it's where we didn't 'finish' and put them away. An expert gardener that I watch says if you know you're gonna move shrubs or trees, go ahead and cut down into the roots, and leave them...they will develop smaller roots closer to the tree and it will be easier to move the tree and you will have new roots growing to make sure the shrub/tree survives.

You should put burn barrels in your orchard in the spring. On frost nights start fires in the barrels and the smoke will keep the frost from sticking to your trees. That is what they do to apples in the UK.

Omg so happy to see someone else grow Jerusalem artichokes. I like to boil them til soft, mash them and then mix with some black beans, whole oats, cooked white rice, seasoning like oregano, salt, pepper, dried onions, garlic, cayenne pepper add an egg or two with some homemade bread crumbs and make them into burgers. Bake or fry and serve on homemade English muffins with some Tzatziki sauce.. They also make great meatballs using the same mix and add to mac and cheese or spaghetti and sauce. If you slice the raw artichokes super thin and air fry them they are better than potato chips. Dip the chips in a mix of homemade mayo and some hot sauce. Anyone who has gas issues with the sunchokes, just soak them in a vinegar and water solution for a few hours, then drain and cook however you like. We also shred them and serve on top of a kale salad with some feta cheese. We grow them in our suburban backyard and have already pulled out about 40lbs worth. You can store them in some pine shavings in pine chips in a cool dark place for a few months. Our chickens and ducks also love them.

Nice sunshine. It was sunny and warm a few hours ago. We took a walk. Right before the sun went down the clouds moved in and the snow started and it'll get down to 18°F overnight. It's only half an inch of snow but it'll be ice in the morning and no snowplows in the Pacific NW. Wow, the hide dried and broke the frame! I'm glad you saved the hide. Nice, mostly back to somewhat square. I like the big bolt you put through it. Wow, 60 to 65 mph winds could rip that plastic right off the hide. That will make a great rug. Looking good upstairs. Meg, you feed those class participants very well! That's great that you got free trees from the moldy seeds in the bucket. Two pear trees and two cherry trees! Cute that Buggy picked which garden plot to put the smaller peach tree. I don't even know what sun chokes are. It's a nice little food forest there. I like that you're putting the little cherry trees there. Too bad about your black walnut trees! I have black walnut trees. Do you want me to send you some of my nuts? I'm in Minnesota. Thanks for this video Hollar family!

Prevent mold in the bucket with sulphur dusting the seeds/acorns. It works with planting potatoes too, my grampa did that.

Cilantro Is like dill. Seed it every two weeks and keep going. Harvest as much as you can when you can or it’ll bolt.

Becky from Acre homestead has better luck growing cilantro in the cool weather and then she freeze dries it and it retains it flavor and color unlike dehydrated

You guys should look into aquaponics. I love it and you can make a system out of an ibc tote. Basically endless veggies especially salad greens
