You have NO idea how much I needed this. I just purchased a condo and my glass dining table is too large. I should have a round table but this was an investment I don’t want to give up
@@JulieKhuu I’m so shocked you replied! Thank you! It’s a rectangular table with a custom glass so it fits the base. You gave me the idea to place it in the center of the room horizontally with the shortest end against the wall against the longest wall. Think of the letter “T”. I’m going to get benches for each side. Ill keep 2 of the white leather dining chairs and place one in each corner slightly turned towards the table about 30 degrees. I’m putting large black “French door (?)” mirrors on either side of the table floor to ceiling. I’ll strategically sprinkle some greenery around as well. Now I’m about to watch a video to learn how to replace a light fixture. 😂
Just a comment before we get carried away with the benefits of a round-edged table: they are a challenge to work with those times you have a huge gathering. With a rectangular table, you can abut another table, run a tablecloth over the whole thing to hide the seam, and everyone dines together, banquet-table style. You can’t do that so easily with a round or oval table (says the guy who would kill for a Saarinen oval pedestal table but knows he’ll hate himself afterwards).
BRAVO, JULIE. Very Well done. I am enjoying your small space series as well as learning much from each one. Education and inspiration wrapped up in well-edited videos. Thank you!
I've been absolutely lost on what to do with my dining space - I've maybe even commented somewhere on a video before about it. Its been a year and a bit of not knowing what to do because I live in a small half hexagon open floor plan. I have two chair, a bench, and a small 4 seater rectangular table. I've had about 24 inches clearance on both sides (between the wall and the kitchen island) and its driven me nuts. I couldn't find another table that was smaller or fit better. I never considered having the bench on the wall side and therefore needing less/no passage way room. Duh! I just ran downstairs to my dining room and switched it around to the layout at 9:14. THANK YOU! While I'm small, as soon as we can start having guests over (I bought just before pandemic) I'm sure I'd feel stressed about everyone else dealing with the strange clearance I had set up. I think you just solved my issue FINALLY! My layout is extremely unique so I haven't found anything that's worked yet.

Julie thank you so much, we habe an open conceot ranch in Maine and can see the ocean from our windows on the left 2 large and triple windows with one leading to a large porch. We love the view. Its the artwork as no walls. The kitchen is to the right of thd windows with the living room behind it.the dining atea is square and Im thinking a round table would be best deating 4 thst has leaves to become oval when family comes. I truly thought a rectangle was best but now you have opened my eyes.. thank you fir your insights. I love watching and thumbs uping your videos..
Round softens up all the angles so you don’t feel confined to specific sides, thus partially limiting those precious views. Your instincts are right on Mamma 🙌🏻
Hi Julie, MaryAnna here! Great video! I am loving this series and you are a great hostess! My Dining Room is 15x 11 and I currently have a round table, but I am getting rid of it and going to get a rectangle table and new chairs. The challenging part is the windows and the main wall space (where I am going to put a large painting) do not align evenly... I’m considering displaying the painting off center of the wall it will be on to better align with the windows on the opposite wall. Also, on the wall where painting will be- hanging it off center will leave room at the end for a buffet or baker’s rack. I wish I could afford a decorator, but I am on a humble budget. Thank you for your ideas- always appreciate your videos 😁
Nice, you showed me exactly what I was thinking about doing for my eat-in kitchen, BB counter from local HD mounted to wall and extending perpendicular to the cabinets with seating on LR side. With single post support on peninsula end and whole thing at countertop height. I have 4 stools from my existing bistro style table that I can cut down to fit.
This was perfect as a vanity desk for me. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMAlHv7-BBWMrPRm5-uEoD6rtdT7SG2Qr Especially the glossy finish. Easy to cleanI was looking for something that wasn't the traditional white and with more of a modern feel. This fit the bill beautifully. I put it together with no problems, by myself in under an hour.Make sure you double check where you place the drawer tracks before screwing down. I had one track that needed to be aligned with different holes than the rest.
hey thanks for the video. super helpful. i wouldnt have considered banquette tables until i saw your video but my kitchen is the perfect set up for one!
I have what sounds like a super similar layout! Our kitchen is semi-open so I don’t have an obvious wall to put the table against for the banquet solution Julie described. The room is also in the middle of the condo with 4 doorways going into the same space and a hallway running along one edge of it. I’m pretty perplexed too, best of luck to you 😊
Love your channel. Hoping you can help, I have a small 70's bungalow, no dining, eat in kitchen, one wall kitchen and just not sure on placement and how to make the room more welcoming. It's open to the living room, front door in middle and side door with steps on side (if you can imagine) approx 15x15 space.
This was exactly what I was searching for to get ideas for a small dining space in my 750 sqft home! Thank you SO much Julie! What a beautifully put together video!!! I'll be checking out your series on small space ideas!! Yay, glad I found you!!:))))
I have a canoe shaped table, which is on 36” wide. It works great for narrow spaces, and opens up for 10 people to sit. Not much room for centre pieces or family style serving dishes, but really great otherwise.
I love how you keep saying "source" this or that. Not so easy in this economy. I do have a beautiful wooden farmhouse style square/rectangle table with 4 chairs and a matching buffet. I definitely don't want to give them up as they are my nicest pieces of furniture I own. My problem is I bought them when I was in a 2 bedroom apartment that had a larger dining room. Now I am in a smaller, one bedroom apartment. You did give me a couple of ideas that I can try though. Nice video.
Hello Julie! I really enjoyed watching this video. Thanks for the valuable tips. Question: how does one measure the dining room area in an open concept layout? Dining/living room combo is what I'm dealing with. Can you please let me know how to determine whether it'll be a rectangular or a square-shaped dining room? Thanks so much in advance!
I love your videos. How would you recommend someone decide on a decor style when they like many elements? For example, I have a difficult time choosing furniture and decor since I like a Hamptons color pallete, I have a lot of vintage of furniture, I love traditional and mixed metals.
Color will always pull a space together, no matter how different the various styles are. Check out my Dream Space series, the episode on color palettes may help guide you Jesse! 👍🏻☺️

Thanks for series Julie❤️ I have average size dining area and relatively small family. But we love hosting guests (4-6 more people at a time) and would love to hear about expandable options to be able sit all the guest and still look nice and inviting.
Nicely done! Quick question, at 1:38 on the video, you show 2 bar tables push together and suggested it can also be pulled apart! Love that idea for my small space! Where can I source the table you show? Thank you!
Thanks, Julie, this is perfect for me -- I have one of those new, modular apts in DC with a long shape (like a shipping container). Can you explain the 36": clearance rule? Or point me to the video? I didn't get that.
I have been watching your small space series lots of helpful information. I would love a series on how to update, design, decorate a small space when you live in a rental and aren't allowed to change anything like paint, fixtures, lighting, closet door (that are metal bifold door and etc. I live in a one bedroom apartment, with living room/dining room combo, galley kitchen, bathroom. How do you create flow from one room to another? Thanks for consideration.
Lay out your seating group and place the fan central above the tables Amber. Check out my lighting video for more tips- you would simply be substituting the pendants for a fan instead 👍🏻
I bought a mid century modern dinig table but would like my space to be a blend of different styles (avoiding super matching furniture).. can you recommend dining chairs and decor that would accomplish that??? Thank you!
I’m working on a dining chair roundup soon Sarah! Like my video for best sectionals/ in the meantime look for inspiration images on Pinterest and see what others are doing that you love
Hello Julie, just wondering is you have ideas about my dinning area. We have 9ft.6 x8ft.6.( Wall seperate from the kitchen and a entry way in the middle of the wall) any idea about it. Thank yoy.
Hi Julie, I love your videos. I have small retanglar dinning area. What if there's no wall to build a banquette. Sliding door to the backyard on one side, pantry/cabinetry on the opposite side. Walk through space to the kitchen on the other side and living room the opposite side.
I had to Google that since I’ve never heard of it before 😆 I see the practicality, especially if you entertain. The con is that you’re relegated to one style. Unless you love that look, then it’s a non issue 👍🏻
Awesome video and content as always. And thank you again for being so descriptive and verbal as it means the world to someone such as myself who is legally blind and others. So I just had a quick question regarding my dining room I do not think we’re not sure if I categorized as a small space my dining room is 14 x 12 But I’d like to get a formal white marble dining room table probably a rectangle that seats 8 people if possible what size table would be appropriate for my space thank you hope you have a wonderful day
I have a open floor plan with LR / DR / Kitchen ( new construction home)….. and i want modern open shelving display for china as opposed to a china cabinet . I have chosen a round glass top table with a chrome base. My colors throughout these 3 rooms …. Are grey, white and silver with hints of black. What are your wise suggestions ???
So helpful as always! I have honey colored trim/baseboards (mid century) that are clashing with my dinning room design(teal, gold, white) Really want to paint them white or black but I'm stuck, any suggestions?
I'm obsessed with the idea of metal chairs with my wood oval dining table. I'm going for a boho vibe but a little mid century modern elements. Am I crazy to think metal chairs would fit in the theme of my small dining room?
I have a loft. I can do 60-65 INCH RECTANGLE TABLE or round. my issue is picking right tables and right color chairs. my sectional is dark gray. I have a modern style. I have the sodehamn sectional. The dining room is off from sectional but still can see both. Should I do gray chairs, or could I do Black or white chairs!
Wow! Just what I was looking for! I’ll need to sell my glass table and find a nice bench and table set that fits my space better. I’m so not a designer 🤦🏼♀️ but so grateful that we have you Julie!
1st off: Great video :) Succinct, thorough, easy to follow, and versatile. 2nd: not sure where to put this, but I'm planning on having a designated studio (either it's own room or a detached from the main house). Any tips or advice to help it be functional and stimulating without being distracting?
Depends on the colors and finishes you’re inspired by Chibi. Is it an art studio? Recording studio? Think about the function first and your aesthetic second 👍🏻
This is so helpful! Thank you julie! I always share your videos to my family and friends.. Re: clearance space, I have a square dining room with 68"x 68" x96" (LxWxH) with corner walls. I am planning to outsource a customized banquet bench pushed against my corner wall in L-shape since its a passage way and doors next to it.. But i am having difficulties of which size round table i will get because i wanted to out 2 more seating opposite of the banquet chair. My round table choices are: 80cm; 90cm; 100cm in diameter. I cannot do a trial sample here in the philippines so i wanted to know whats best suits on my space.. Thank you in advance julie!
@@lindaleal809 actually, i still have open space after that width measurement. But i dont want to block the passage to my room door and also on the length space, I dont want something bumping on my main door
Thank you 🌸 I have an awkward dining room but watching your design channel over the last few months inadvertently helped me 👌 - thank you! I currently work from home and have my office space in my lounge, but cannot get the layout cohesive and calm, and separate without blocking the amazing flow of my space ..... so perhaps that could be a topic at some stage?
Hi Julie! Need your suggestion, our front door opens into our dining area and my husband doesn't like it. Table is horizontally placed. If we move it vertically, table would block the pass way to kitchen.
Sounds like your table might be too big/ wrong size/ shape Hazel. Try an oval or round shape so there’s no sharp edges to bump into. Or flank it against a wall to free up space
Great tips Julie! I just found a solution for my too long rectangular glass top coffee table....change the top for an oval glass top! You are brilliant 🙌
The title of this video is about small dining spaces. Several dining rooms that are most likely 12' × 15' and larger, are then used for examples. In my 70 years I've never had a dining room that big. I would like to have seen all the examples actually be small.
You have NO idea how much I needed this. I just purchased a condo and my glass dining table is too large. I should have a round table but this was an investment I don’t want to give up
You can always cut a smaller glass top 👍🏻

But I’d like to get a formal white marble dining room table probably a rectangle that seats 8 people if possible what size table would be appropriate for my space thank you hope you have a wonderful day
90” length is typical Thomas. Your large dining room will support it, no problem
White lacquered floating shelves for a modern glam effect or try bleached oak if you want some contrast Diana

Thank you for watching Varsha 🙏🏻☺️
So helpful as always! I have honey colored trim/baseboards (mid century) that are clashing with my dinning room design(teal, gold, white) Really want to paint them white or black but I'm stuck, any suggestions?
Thank you for watching Erika! Check out my video on wood trim plus fav paint colors for more inspiration 👍🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu I will, thanks.
Hello.. great video... Where are the links for the banquettes/benches
They’re in the description box Manjeera

Thank you for watching Milano! ☺️🙏🏻
I'm obsessed with the idea of metal chairs with my wood oval dining table. I'm going for a boho vibe but a little mid century modern elements. Am I crazy to think metal chairs would fit in the theme of my small dining room?
If you love it, you will make it work no matter what your style is Cassandra! 👍🏻☺️
I'd definitely bump into those invisible chairs.. 🤣
Haha good thing it’ll be confined to a corner 😅
OmG you replied... It's just that... I bump into everything... I'm just too clumsy. 🤣
Definitely not gray Mecha- black or white for some contrast 👍🏻
Love it, love it, love it Julie! 👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼😘
Thank you for watching Zee! 🙏🏻☺️
@@JulieKhuu, you always make this old lady’s day! Love your channel, I tell everyone about you! 😘
Wow! Just what I was looking for! I’ll need to sell my glass table and find a nice bench and table set that fits my space better. I’m so not a designer 🤦🏼♀️ but so grateful that we have you Julie!
As long as you understand your conditions Shelly, I’m sure you’ll specify the perfect solution 🙌🏻
Benchs are usually too low
1st off: Great video :) Succinct, thorough, easy to follow, and versatile.
2nd: not sure where to put this, but I'm planning on having a designated studio (either it's own room or a detached from the main house). Any tips or advice to help it be functional and stimulating without being distracting?
Depends on the colors and finishes you’re inspired by Chibi. Is it an art studio? Recording studio? Think about the function first and your aesthetic second 👍🏻
I love all ur videos
Thank you for watching and the support 🙏🏻☺️
@@lindaleal809 im not using any rug yet but im planning to get one to emphasize the space
By my calculations- 48” round would be ideal / so 100cm the largest size 👍🏻
@@JulieKhuu thank you
Thank you 🌸 I have an awkward dining room but watching your design channel over the last few months inadvertently helped me 👌 - thank you!
I currently work from home and have my office space in my lounge, but cannot get the layout cohesive and calm, and separate without blocking the amazing flow of my space ..... so perhaps that could be a topic at some stage?
I have a few work from home design videos Elin- check out the dining room mistakes video for more tips 👍🏻☺️
i think ill gamble on the 30 inch chair clearance and go for a larger table. 30 inches should be adequate for physically fit folks.
Do what works for you AJ! 👍🏻☺️
I love your tips thank you so much
Thank you for watching Nancy 🙏🏻☺️
I have a pounded metal round dining table. It is leaving a metal smell on my arms or clothes. Should I get a glass top? Or will that be overkill?
Glass would be my suggestion as well 👍🏻
Nice video to share 👍🏻♥️♥️
Thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
I have a dining room with a door that lead to back patio. I use as common entry. I want to place a full length mirror on it.
Mind the support since that door will swing quite frequently Ailghlette, might not be the most stable spot for a mirror
You are a life saver.
Thank you for watching Arlene 🙏🏻☺️
White table clear chairs genius
For tight corners, I love that look! 😍
I have a 996sqt 2bathroom 3bedroom apartment.and its a walk in kitchen small living room.what type of table should I buy for a family of 5ppl.
Small round works or a rectangular table pushed against a wall to free up clearance Yaneri 👍🏻😊
Hello Julie.. Great video.. I've a square dining room but square and circular tables are pretty expensive.. Can I go with a rectangular Table?
If you have the space for the clearance, go for it 👍🏻
Soooo helpful
Great tips Julie! I just found a solution for my too long rectangular glass top coffee table....change the top for an oval glass top! You are brilliant 🙌
Woohoo!! That base won’t go to waste 🙌🏻
The title of this video is about small dining spaces. Several dining rooms that are most likely 12' × 15' and larger, are then used for examples. In my 70 years I've never had a dining room that big.
I would like to have seen all the examples actually be small.
Hi Mary, thank you for watching! My dining room is not that large as well, but I can still find great solutions that I can apply from larger spaces ☺️
