    Courvoisier VS is a solid, if rough, around the edge’s cognac. Not for the faint hearted. But it is rewarding for those, who don’t mind a little bite. It’s aged longer than usual for VS, for 3-7 years. Yet the palate is far from smooth. Courvoisier VS is almost a hybrid V.S./V.S.O.P. The cellar master could have covered it with sugar and caramel to “smooth” the taste, but, fortunately, they didn’t. The flavors and the texture are truly impressive for a young cognac. The grapes are primarily sourced from the Fins Bois region with some Petite Champagne. The aromas are very fresh and assertive. Menthol and peaches greet you at the beginning, Caramel and vanilla, join the party later. Peaches are said to be Courvoisier’s signature aroma. True. It is aroma of caramelized, stewed peaches, rather than fresh peaches. Nutty. Black walnuts. The palate is the challenging part of the experience. It’s rough and alcohol is prominent. I never use ice in my brandy, just a splash of water. This cognac, however, can take a cube of ice. OR TWO. You can fold and quit, or you can persist. I choose the latter. Once the initial alcohol burn on the palate is gone, flavors are pleasant. The palate carries much of the aromas from the nose, bursting with citrus, spices, peaches, vanilla and caramel. Fruity. A hint of tabaco and walnuts. Less grapy, than Henny. The mouthfeel is great. Full body and oily. The texture here is better than that of Courvoisier VSOP. Finish is medium. More spices, caramel and peaches.
    This is not a cognac for a novice. It is rough, bold and challenging. No other cognac at this price range, however, brought as much flavors, full body and joy to my palate. This is my VS cognac of choice, followed by Hardy VS. If you prefer smooth and sweet brandy, with a lovely aroma, get the Henny VS. If you like a bold showstopper, with great flavors and sharp edges, get the Courvoisier VS. Cheers.

    Hahaha, I remember at about the age of 15 or so... and was flat out broke. A guy my friend knew noticed I was down on my luck and told me to take a sip... I said wow, that is good. He said here take another sip, I did... I didn't know what it was then, but found out later what it was. I think whiskey, bourbon and cognacs are the best when you think that you're at rock bottom 😂😂. Good video 👍

      Hennessy VS is certainly smoother and less of a green mint or spearmint note I pick up in the Courvoisier. I really like the Courvoisier VS plus it’s cheaper than the Hennessy.
      Have a great weekend!

    This sounds like an interesting option for my brandy-based cocktails (Sidecar, Metropolitan).
    I currently use Carlos 1 Brandy de Jerez.
    I think it's very similar, very good quality and complexity, but not too smooth so it can still stand out in a cocktail.

    I came across your channel, cause im a fan of brandy and cognac. Remy Martin VSOP is what initially hooked me to cognac like 15 years ago. And back then I prefered it over hennessy VSOP (so never bought hennessy again). For Brandy I like Torres 10, prefer 10 over torres 15 flavour wise.
    Your comment saying that VS versus VSOP is that VS has some sort of Texture is what i call KICK, vsop doesnt have a kick, it's already too smooth for that, so whenever i'm in the mood for a brandy or cognac with a kick, i go with the cheaper ones. At least that's how i experienced them up till now.
    This xmas im thinking about going for a bottle of Courvoisier VS and a bottle of Carlos1 Brandy Solera Gran Reserva.
    As far as i know, gran reserva (for spanish Brandy) is aged for minimal 10 years i think with a solera system, which might belong in the same line as the VSOP cognac feel.
    but comparing remy martin vsop with a torres anos 10 (torres 10 is a solera system blend, wich the oldest being 10 years i believe), the torres 10 has more of a kick. So i think Torres anos 10 is more of a VS in cognac terms.

    VSOP level, depending on your market, is definitely worth the slight price increase imho. Basically getting twice the aging for not much more. XO is typically double that amount, and the law of diminishing returns kicks in. Courvy VS is still an exceptional product

    I think you juste convinced me Jason.. I'm gonna buy a miniature bottle of Courvoisier VS (as my first Cognac) ! It's nice to broaden our horizon beyond whiskey and Cognac seems like a natural way to go. I already enjoy rum quite a lot. Like they say, variety is the spice of life ;-)

      Jason Debly yes, VS ok I will buy another bottle, have to tell you I’m curious so I bought the VSOP too. Definitely a difference between the two, I had a glass of each but slowly, at. 40% don’t drive afterward . After a stressful day this really does relax you, the VS is a clearer colour flavours are surprisingly apparent. The VSOP has more , of what exactly is a learning process for me, revived relaxed mmm very nice too , still curious so the XO is next when I find a bottle. Still partial to my Drambuie but cognac is on my list. Looking forward to your next videos. Love the amber colour the flavour is surprisingly complex the warmth starts at the tongue all the way to the stomach mmm yes please

    • @JasonDebly
      @JasonDebly  7 років тому +1

      Good to read that you enjoyed the Cognac. It's a great spirit for me because it is not too demanding of my attention like a single malt. Cognac is a simpler presentation of a narrower range of flavours, but that is good too. I also like to put my brain in neutral after a tough day, and so want a drink like Cognac that is not demanding but supportive.

    I’d rather spend a bit more for Martell XO or De Luze XO. With these two, about $150 a bottle, you’ll get some real complexity, some rancio, nice dried fruit and a long finish. Usually, the VS, for me, is just too alcohol forward. Okay mixed, but not for after dinner enjoyment.

    • @JasonDebly
      @JasonDebly  7 років тому +2

      James Bolger Not exactly a fair comparison of VS vs XO but yeah I hear ya. Those XOs are very fine.
      For me, as I mentioned in the review, I kinda like that raw green pepper, minty note that you may characterize as alcohol forward. At the price point of VS I am fine with it.
      Thanks for commenting and I will try and review those bottles sometime.

      What you should do is buy a cheap bottle of Hennessy VS. Sample that over a week or two and get familiar with the flavor profile, and then try the XO for the first time and you will really appreciate the difference in aging, eau de vie quality, etc.
      Enjoy!

  • @jeffcoole741

    I haven't had any Courvoisier in a long time, but I've never been a huge fan of the VS level. I got exposed to Hennessy VSOP about 35 years ago and have been a fan ever since. I've tried bottles of the VS a few times, but it's worth it to me to pay up for the VSOP, which I can usually find for between $60-$70. I've had the XO, and like it, but don't think there is enough improvement over VSOP to justify the price difference, but I do think there is enough improvement in quality and taste to justify buying VSOP over VS.

    • @JasonDebly
      @JasonDebly  7 років тому +1

      I guess I kinda like the bite and greeness of VS.
      I totally agree with your statement that while there is a significant change in taste going from VS to VSOP, the same cannot be said between the latter and XO.

    I would never drink this neat,
    I use this cognac for cocktails, like a sidecar etc, so i don't waste a good cognac on a mix drink,
    If you are going to drink cognac neat, shell a few more bucks and enjoy cognac properly.
    That is just my opinion of course.

    Thank you for the review. I've been wanting to try a decent entry level cognac for a while. Where I live I see this particular brand on sale quite often, as a matter of fact, I just saw it going for $21 (the VS that is) and the VSOP for $25! I might as well get a couple and try them out for myself ;)
    On a side note, will you ever make tequila reviews? Just saying. ;)
