  • Our latest video is a profile of Portlander Jamshed Patel. It's the first in what we hope is an ongoing series that introduces you to people who live (and live well!) without owning a car.
According to the Census Bureau, 8.6% of American households don't have cars available to them. But in Portland that number nearly doubles to 14.2%. Thanks to relatively compact neighborhoods, mature networks for non-driving options like biking and transit, and many other factors, it's more common than you might think to survive without a four-wheeled motorized machine in your life. And with so many parts of our daily lives being rethought due to the pandemic and the climate crisis, more people than ever are finding ways to live low-car or no-car.
Jamshed grew up in Leicester, England and dreamt of driving cars. "I really looked up to James Bond as a kid, like many of the kids in England, and he had the best cars, and he had the most beautiful women supposedly, and I wished to be like him," he shares in the video. But since he passed his driving exam when he was 17, he's only driven a total of about five miles.

Had the pleasure of meeting Jamshed on my ride into work the other day. Only talked for about twenty minutes before our paths split, but it was twenty minutes well spent.

We are a car free Portland family with two kids and I am a tile guy in NE pdx using only a bike and trailer built from salvage for close to ten years now.

Thank you for sharing Jamshed. You nailed it when you said we need to move away from cars.

Cheers John, yes most people in the so called west live in a bubble of excess consumption and the car is one of the most notable examples of it I think, so often unnecessarily moving a tonne of metal a couple of miles or less to get just a bag of shopping and then often saying something needs to be done about climate change :( glad to have bike as my primary mode of daily moving around and moving stuff after walking :)

Jamshed and I first met several decades ago in his home town as I also live there. As a fellow cyclist we've had many discussions on bike related (and other) topics - but especially trailers - and I agree completely with his comments about how much flexibility for load carrying their use offers a cyclist.
In my case the ones I've built have generally been made to satisfy a specific need / purpose at the time - and the current one is no exception - although it is significantly different from previous ones because it folds when not required and is stowed on top of the pannier rack.
The 12.5in QR axle wheels stow in one of the panniers - so when folded on the pannier rack it looks like a random load of scrap / junk.
As a regular bin / skip / dumpster? diver I wanted something that I could take with me on the bike when not needed - but be readily available for use when 'targets of interest / opportunity' are spotted :)
It's been extensively used in its 3.5yrs of life to date - and has been an absolute game changer re what it's allowed me to take home to my workshop.
At the time of writing this, the only other folding bike trailer that I'm aware of is the German Trenux - but at 500euros - compared to the almost zero mine cost to make - I'll stick with mine.
    Edit
Since making this post I've started an Instagram account mainly related to my use of bike trailers.
Early days at the moment, but pics might complement the above text for some?

Hi Paul, yes the trailer I built which you gave me some parts for (the ball type joint and angle aluminum) actually did a return journey by ship with me on one of my crossings :) look forward to getting the one wheeled one you have on the road :)

The world and peoples' lives are full of nuance and complexity. He doesn't need to drive so he doesn't but presumably has familiy still in Leicester so of course he's going to visit.
Are you saying he can only talk about climate change issues if he lives in a cave and only eats scum off the walls? Grow up.
Oops, sorry, I'm using using a computer to watch this video and type this comment, which was made using oil and precious minerals so I guess by your logic I can't talk about climate change either. My bad!

What a stupid comment. The right-wing argument that you're a hypocrite (which you're too timid or dull to fully articulate) if you care about climate change but ever get on a plane is one of the dumbest, tiredest arguments around, reflecting either a profound inability to engage in logic or bad faith. Dullards like Bici Cogito (such an ironic name!) are why the Internet sucks now. But hey, at least Jonathan can't censor me on UA-cam!

@@bicicogito989 sorry everyone we're only allowed to talk about climate change if we follow Bici's rules. Come on Bici, we're all taking notes. Do I need to bin my bike? My TV? Given right wingers get so precious about cancel culture, wokism and freedom of speech, it's amusing you're trying to prevent other people from talking about issues they care about.
