Great find! These 6200 Pro’s are built really well and serve as a great everyday PC today. I’ve even converted mine into a home server since I figured these office PCs were designed to run 24/7 anyway.

They really are great machines. I'm considering removing the optical drive in favor of adding another hard drive, but then I lose out on being able to watch DVDs or play CDs. I'd consider using the 3.5" bay, but I'd like to add one of the HP memory card readers that would've been an option for these systems when new. Maybe I'll stick a few 2.5" drives in it where space permits.

Those business class HPs are actually nice and almost never fail. I serviced a lot of these and they usually just need a good cleanup and an SSD and they're ready to be useful again. The only downside of this model is it won't support 3rd gen CPUs because of the chipset

I actually picked one of these up with an i5, an SSD, 8GB of RAM, and an older Quadro GPU for $60 CAD. I was able to overclock the GPU by 20%. Games like Starcraft, Heros, and a plethora of other PC games are already playable.
I'm going to add an i7, 32GB of RAM, and a modern LP graphics card. I'll have some fun tinkering with it, then sell it off to the next entry level gamer.
At 35 years old, it feels good to get back into this hobby, and it's crazy to see how hardware from our time is still capable with modern software.
    Thanks for the video!

I have the one from the following year, an HP Compaq Pro 6300 with Core i5-3470, also rescued from the trash for free. It's my most powerful computer.

I just came across a parts computer with four sticks of 4GB DDR3 I'll be able to use to upgrade this system to a total of 16GB (if it can support it). I also might throw in a dedicated graphics card, though I think the Intel Graphics should be more than adequate for my needs.

I had a similar model as my main PC (An 8200 tower with the same i5) for $89.99 on ebay and itg was pretty good. I used it until October 2022 when i bought an HP EliteDesk G1 800 for only $50. I'm glad they have PS/2 ports so i can use my vintage keyboards.

Sandy Bridge/Ivy Bridge is still very usable, my mom still uses an iMac with i7 2600S with no complaints

I haven't had any complaints so far. It definitely not new, but nowhere new old and obsolete. I have a few upgrades in mind that should really help to breathe some new life into it. I'll likely do a follow-up video when the time comes.

Nice, can’t beat free! It’s strange to think that machines from this era are getting relatively old but they certainly don’t feel like they’re obsolete. Just goes to show how they are still quite capable for even just basic tasks. It’s a nice system for a home theater setup, or alternatively to run a file server or something similar, good to see you’ll get some use out of it. The benefit of these systems being older as well is that upgrades, at least if you want them, are pretty easy to get and inexpensive. The easy access to everything inside reminds me of some of my Dell Desktops where everything can be swapped out or removed without the need for any tools apart from maybe a screwdriver, looks like a great system overall! By the way, if you are looking to wirelessly access the internet with an Ethernet cable, look at the AirPort lineup from Apple. Something like an AirPort Express or Extreme can extend your wireless network and provide an Ethernet port to connect something up to the internet without WiFi. They are pretty inexpensive nowadays, at least depending on the model, and it’ll be easy to setup with your MacBook or iPhone.

It is shocking how accessible everything is. That really is the nice part about these older (but still new enough to be usable) systems; the parts are cheap and plentiful enough that it doesn't break the bank if you want to upgrade it. I'll take a look into the Airport Express/Extreme systems too, since my wireless network's range is pretty abysmal at the moment.

Exactly, it’s gotten to the point where quite nice systems, are super easy to get ahold of and aren’t limited by age anymore. Plus, you could always get ahold of a bunch of systems, even broken ones and upgrade/swap parts. I recommend the AirPort lineup, super handy and they work well together. You could probably find a bunch for a good deal since they are older now but still just as capable. I have some Extremes as extenders, Express models for AirPlay audio and extenders, and a Time Machine for the Mac Mini. Those backups have helped a lot in the past.

just got one of those nifty small form factor pcs from a guy that was throwing it into a devices recycling bin and will upgrade its CPU to an i7-2600 I had lying around (it even takes a Xeon E3-1260L if you can find one for cheap but won't really go into the hassle unless I literally bump into a dead cheap one at a parts sale). Too bad HP never bothered to update its BIOS to support 3rd gen CPUs for that slot (or they simply thought why not force you to buy a new one).

Great find! That beats my goodwill Dell Optiplex 3010 with a second gen i3..... and I had to PAY for the thing!! Outrageous!! :v)

    • @stereophonicstuff
      @stereophonicstuff  Рік тому

I'm still using a Dell Optiplex 7010 as my main PC. It's been heavily modified over the years and continues to be a workhorse, so I haven't had any need to upgrade or replace it. Plus I have it configured exactly how I need it to be, so to start over from scratch is something I'd rather not do unless absolutely necessary. I now have two spare systems chock full of spare parts I can use to keep the 7010 (the best spec'ed model of that generation Optiplex) going.
I'm tempted to clone the HD onto one of the spare systems just to experiment with Windows 11 without sacrificing my existing Windows 10 install.

I ended up with one of these recently and it only has 2 GB of RAM which I will upgrade IF I keep the computer. That said, whoever discarded this had already updated up to Windows 10 and between that and the 2 GB RAM the computer basically doesn't function. It takes minutes for anything to happen when you click and the task manager shows almost every metric running at 100% at all times.
How would I be able to downgrade to an OS that will run smoothly? Have you had enough luck with Windows 10 for your use case (which would be very similar to my own intentions, using the computer as a media center) to justify me laying out money for RAM? Or is this likely to never function at this point since it was overupgraded?

Thats a pretty decent computer it's a shame the previous owner threw it out they thought since windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft they figured they might as well get a new computer.

I have one of these but I can't get the top cover off, the release latch doesn't do it. I dunno whether it's jammed or whether there's some trick involved. Anybody have any ideas?

    Hello everyone.
Does anybody know if the memory from a 6200 , and memory from
    a 6300 are cross compatible.
I have a 6300 with CPU fan maxing out on me , and I'm trying to troubleshoot it
and wondering if any parts for CPU , fans , and memory are cross compatible with
    the 6200 .
