I remember being chased by one of these when they first came out, me on a motorbike flat out. I couldn’t believe this car was keeping up with me. We both stopped at a petrol station and that’s when I became aware of the M3.
I did the big 3 (subframe, rod bearings, vanos) years ago, no problems since. Just oil/filter/tires/pads now. The sound is mechanical perfection and the road feel and balance is unmatched until you get in a GT2. The only thing I hate about driving my 2005 Imola M3 Dinan is seeing the odometer roll up.
Had one, sold it, bought a E92M3, missed the E46, bought a E46 again, could not sell the V8, and have now E46 & E92, and that was really not my plan....
Looking at the temperature... 🧐 E36 will always be my favourite M3, maybe because of my childhood, but the E46 is also a lovely thing! Great to see a manual and a simple, analog dashboard!
@@mrmusic1880 better sound? From factory, no. With lots of expensive aftermarket parts, maybe. Major issue I have with them is their sound insulation that makes the car much quieter inside than outside. Plus the electronic noise… overall a very mixed outcome. The body stiffness and stability obviously did improve.
@@drogenfeld I only enjoy the stock sound, people mod them and it creates such a horrible tone, It has to be stock! It's my personal favourite sounding car, it has so much character in it whenever you lift off it bangs and at different rpms it will let out a rasp it is such a delicious sound!

I own one of these. Every time I sit in the car and drive the pure rawness is amazing. It’s a real honest car as many of you say. The S54 is a masterpiece. Nevertheless-> if you don’t rev it properly, every Golf 7/8 GTI will destroy you. And we don’t want to start with my M140i… the modern turbo cars are so much quicker in the straight line. It’s crazy…
Thing is, I don't actually think the E46 M3 is THAT much quicker than my current 330i. But - and this is a big BUT - the E46 looks so much more fun! Long gearing, beautiful sound, manual gear box and 8.500 rpm. Heaven!!
omg so much time on/near that redline 5:50. I wish we could have a camera filming inside of the engine and several telemetry sensors to visualize every temperature points. I mean, how much time can that engine handle that load and rpm? fascinating engineering.
Interesting to see, last F80 M4 I drove maxed out on 5th gear at the same speed 167mph. Of course it still had more to go in 6th, but interesting to see how a 2017 manual had the same ratios or relatively close to a E46. I guess if the recipe is right, why change it haha
im going to buy this car once i get my driver's license. this car is so fast even at it's stock model im just gonna add a some carbon fiber on the inside and get it some shiny red color with some bodykits
I have a G82, 2022 Comp AWD. I had a 2005 ZHP E46 hardtop Coupe with manual. The ZHP was a better driver. My .02. More refined with a much better quality interior with turned real aluminum trim. The G82 looks like a Chevrolet inside with cheap silver plastic. The trim is almost opaque and will blind you when the sun hits it. On the fence about keeping it. Never really got excited about the G platform. BMW lately has an exorbitant amount of electronic swag which is totally useless for daily driving.
To reset the engine management light, otherwise known as the engine control light reset, on the BMW 1 Series, You will either need to reset the battery by separating the positive and negative cables from the battery for approximately 10 minutes. Make sure You correct all the issues that make the inspection light glow before You clear the message or it will come back.

there is a lot of mod to lower oil temp but on street is not necessary
so, what do you think is wrong with the temps?

I have an Imola red ll BMW E46 M3 manual and I must say compared to my M4 F82 it actually holds up quite well, very impressive car!
an e46 is definitely the much more charming car compared to modern BMWs.
It's slow AF compared to M4 but it has charm. Everything else is worse.

My 74 280C did 220 kmh on the 5 . It had a DOHC straight six. Sunday mornings were best for little traffic
