- This is the fifth episode in a mini-series, introducing you to some of the birds I work with.
Introducing the smallest bird that I currently work with. He is just 3 years old and homebred. Hiccup is a Little Owl, the UK's smallest resident species of owl. Even though the weather is rubbish at the moment I find ways to keep him entertained!

When we lived in Wyoming (in the US) we had a little burrowing owl that lived in your yard, and he looked perpetually grumpy 😆 we loved him.

I did not even notice that Hiccup looks angrily, I have learned by now to look at the chest, feathers and movement, unconsciously.
Ditto. It was only when he looked straight at the camera that it came across as a stern/grumpy face. I only use animal markings to help me tell individuals apart.

Topic Idea - "Bird Body Language" - you talk about how you an tell their mental state by their physical state... Other signs such as health or illness. Its always a joy to see how you understand and care for your birds - From birth and through life. You're a wonderful "bird mom" :)

I don't think you'd get much about their health from body language. They'd rather try to conceal illnesses.
However it can be helpful to know attitudes or behaviors that can be telling on the bird's mood.
We have great horned owls the size of B-52 bombers where I live.
My neighborhood has a very big one who, judging by the sounds I hear at night, is quite fond of the local cotton tail population
I used to go and visit a cute little owl in an old abandoned plane near to where I lived, it was so beautiful. Seeing them so closely is so nice, interesting and helpful knowing about them too. Thank you for being such a wonderful caregiver to these beautiful creatures, you do such a great job, and are so caring with all of your animals, you can tell that you truly love them and care about them.

170 grams! Wow... so tiny and adorable! I love how such adorable creatures can look so angry or even scary. This adorable owl may have RBF but he's seriously the cutest. I love how he's so talkative.

I have been fascinated with owls since I was a little boy (60+ years ago). Having grown up in an area of dozens of family dairy farms there were plenty about. The occasional sighting was always a real treat. Wouldn't mind hanging out with Hiccup for an afternoon.It would be be a real hoot for this old guy. Thanks for the share.

The tiniest jesse's! I would need magnifying glass to get anklets secured...lol! You cant get 10 ft. away from him before he flies. Such a quick metabolism for an Owl. Flying style was interesting.

Fun fact! Typically the hunting times of owls typically depend on their eye colour, little and short eared owls hunt usually in the day as shown by their yellow eyes. Dusk and Dawn hunters such as the great horned owl have orange eyes, and hunters like the barn and tawny owls hunt at night with their brown / black eyes
He is such a cute little fluff, I love him.
What a beautiful creature. I know how loud these guys can be, we have one who comes to sit up in the roof in my gliding club hangar. I've been there working in the evening before now and the owl has been shouting at me. And as for their camouflage, check out Villager Jim on Facebook, he regularly shows pictures of 2 or 3 on dry stone walls and you just can't see them.
