The announcer explained that the scoreboard could not show a perfect 10.
I still wonder how that roof stayed on…
Also, we were still in the depths of the Cold War.
Duck and Cover was still a thing.
But, it was probably the first time that I was rooting for someone from Russia!

the other girl was actually nellie kim who is the president of the gymnastics technical committee now. she never got over the fact nadia stole the show. nellie was also awarded a perfect 10 in this competition but nobody remembers anymore since it wasn't the first one!
+Peyton Chan Actually this bars routine they put on the video is her free routine. Nadia got the first 10 on her compulsory bar routine on the day before, which was a routine with mandatory movements that all gymnasts were required to do in all apparatuses. Then, in the second day, they would do a free routine which was far more difficult. The compulsory routines were abandoned after 1996 because it was too boring for TV broadcast (but extremely important for artistry - which is one of the reasons gymnastics became some sort of x-game now). So, nadia got the first 10 in her mandatory uneven bar routines and 6 times more on beam and bars throughout the competition, nellie kim got a 10 on vault during the all around competition on the following day. In my opinion, Nadia was far better, although, on the floor, Nellie Kim had more difficulty (she was the first one to do a double back summersault on floor - and remember that time the floor didn't have springboards to give you impulsion like now, it was only a thin mattress with carpet). Nellie Kim was a very decent gymnast with amazing difficulty. Her problem is that she was always overshadowed by someone. In 1976 Olympics it was Nadia (they still don't talk so much up to this day), then, in 1978 Worlds, Elena Mukhina showed up in the soviet team and eclipsed her one more time and, then, in 1980 Olympics, Elena Davydova took the spotlights away from her. But her main "nemesis" will always be Nadia. But I think Nadia won fair and square.

+Onegin65 I agree with you about Nelli. Are you sure she got suspended in 1999? I always thought she got suspended after 1988 Olympics and the whole Silivas - Shushunova AA drama at the vault where she didn't award Silivas a perfect 10.(However, in my opinion, Silivas didn't do a perfect vault and she didn't get Pefect 10's unanimously from all the seven judges. Plus, in the rotation before, all of the judges awarded Shushunova's FX routine a perfect 10 but the Romanian judge! So I guess Nellie was just getting back at them!).
I also don't like the new scoring system. I think the gymnasts are getting over scored just for attempts of harder skills as opposed to perfection. Take the VT for instance and these girls gaining a berth into the finals just for attempting doing a Produnova but almost always falling on their butts. But I also didn't completely agreed sometimes with the older scoring system. Sometimes the gymnast's reputation or the country they were from already gave them some advantage with the judges even if they didn't have a difficult routine - I am looking at you Gina Gogean!

I was born in Romania and I remember the happiness and pride! I am her age,I bought her book and broke all 10 toes trying to do a hand stand like Nadia.Even Ceaușescu was proud and smiled when he awarded her with some kind of trophy,I don't recall which.
