+Rachel It's more to do with changes to the apparatuses and the scoring system. The bars are a lot closer together, so the gymnasts all did those belly bang moves whereas now they are able to do giants, etc. and gain more speed and so do more difficult moves including a lot taken from the men's high bar. They now use a spring floor so are able to do much more difficult tumbling passes than she could. Same with vault and the table vs the horse. The other big change is the way scoring now favours difficulty over perfection and artistry.
In 1976 Nadia was more than a gymnast; she was a super star. She had everything; great gymnastic ability, balance, grace, beauty, and elegance. There have and will be lots of great gymnasts; most will be replaced and soon forgotten. There may never be another Nadia and like Jim Thorpe, she will never be forgotten. I don't know that Nadia is the best of all time but she was certainly the best in her in her time. No one before or since has accomplished as much in creating interest in women's gymnastics in the USA and in the world as Nadia. The spark that Olga Korbut started Nadia turned into a blazing fire.
Nadia exuded femininity. Olga portrayed a more masculine style to her routine. Most all female gymnasts today still want to act like males in their routines to acquire points and the attention of the judges, but Nadia's coaches thought otherwise and won her heaps of gold by training her so. How to rectify the mindset of female gymnasts today? So that they don't want to act like guys? I don't know.
She looks like she's having so much fun! Her dance movements are so lively and energetic. So different from the mechanical dance routines gymnasts perform today. She is a performer, not just a gymnast!
And she was hating gymnastics and being forced to perform by lunatic coaches and government. Some people will romanticize and glamorize anything to make it seem so deep.

July Uhlarikova in fact it is easier when you are younger you have more flexibility and less weight to carry also. Female gymnasts are considered old when they reach 21-22. So basically if you want to participate in 3 Olympic Games you must start in your first Olympics around that age
For the naysayers who reckon that Nadia's routines were "easy", may I point out that the equipment was completely different back then. The beam, as you can see in the video, is just a block of wood. No springs and no padding. Same with the floor - it's just that, a floor. The strength needed to do the tumbles and passes Nadia did so beautifully, and off a "dead" floor and beam no less, is phenomenal. And they used the old vaulting horse rather than the modern day vaulting table. I would venture an opinion that if Nadia were competing today, she would absolutely be up there with the best.
Bella Barbee That's OK, no offence taken. Yes floors today do have lots of springs. But the floor here is the old padded floor. They are a leftover from the times when the Soviets dominated gymnastics. Although the modern sprung floors allow for more powerful tumbling, I kind of miss the grace and artistry that the old simple padded floor routines had.
She had such grace, elegance, presence, and effortless way about her when performing. She is a classic and her performance was like a ballet, opera, and gymnastic performance in one.
it can being do that on my with brain saying sing one with is it of that one can being you too? Anyone it is experience with it can saying of when like this will be without it isn't then but now, WOW. Thank, yes, yes.
Lmfao you’re a clown. Simone lacks the ability to put a decent floor routine together. Her connections between tumbling passes are choppy. She should have spent all this extra time working on ballet skills for smoother floor and beam routines. Gymnastics altogether has become acrobatics and needs to get back to what it used to be
I agree with you that she was remarkable. She was remarkable for her time, but she cannot compete with the gymnast of today. She would not make the weakest of teams. Nevertheless, Nadia is and will always be a legend in the sport.
+BDP I think if she was that age today and trained like the other gymnast today she would be the best her training was the best they had at that time I can't imagine what she could do now
She didn't have the 'natural power' that some of today's athletes have. Certainly she was graceful and could dance as well if not better, but she could not soar like a Simone Biles. Jesse Owens with today's advantages still would not outrun Usain Bolt. Some people simply have physical advantages that others do not have.
+BDP You can build power by working out at the gym. Having such flawless grace and elegance is much harder to achieve. I'm not interested in watching a 'powerful' gymnast
I don't think we will ever see another gymnast of this caliber. She's light as a feather with every movement. I was seven when she achieved this. I remember watching her on the TV and wanting to be just like her.
These routines literally are the embodiment of artistic gymnastics. All other recent greats have been powerful, but non this fluid and articulate in her body posture 👌🏼
When I look at people like Simone Biles, the main emphasis is body strength and musculature. Even at Rio, Biles wobbled. None of the gracefulness you see here. I think Comaneci’s uneven bars routine was harder than anything I saw in 2021. I fail to understand why Biles calls herself the GOAT.
I dunno how many times I've seen this video over the years, but I'll never get tired of it, and I'll never get over how effortless, how strong, yet soft and graceful her movements are. She's immaculate. I remember my history teacher pushed us to learn so much about the world around us, and the people who made impact in the world, and find who inspires us... and as I searched for those people. One of them is definitely Nadia Comaneci.
I have to watch it at least five times a week I love her so much even when she waves to the crowd she did it perfectly she pivoted on her foot and waved and then pivoted back and waved and pivoted this way and waved her lines were so perfect she was just perfect I mean you just can't say much more than Miami dolphins Floyd Mayweather Jr Rocky Marciano Secretariat and Nadia Comanche top five athletic achievements of all time I guess you could throw Wayne Gretzky and babe Ruth and Henry Aaron in there
I was 11 during those games. I remember my brother in law and sister let me stay up late to watch her. I never forgot it. What a performance! And the longer it stands, the more amazing it becomes. I doubt we'll ever see another Nadia.
Just read her story on BBC Magazine, a legend and well deserved 10! *Fun Fact : The scoreboard only had three digits (9.99 max), so when the judges awarded her a perfect 10, there was no way to display the score on the board, the board flashed up "1.00" instead, and make everyone confused at that time.
actually more interesting fact, nadia n bela ( the coach) were confuse at the beginning because why 1.0? is nadia got big error somewhere before they realize its a 10.0 actually
In an interview Nadia said that the first thing that came up to her mind when she saw the 1.00 was " I havent done it that wrong, have I?" And I somehow finde it kinda cute
They use trampoline floors now which help the gymnast to bounce higher which looks amazing but if you analyse the floors used before, you need to have great leg power to push yourself up for the tumbles. Thats why Nadia is amazing.
@QPHashSS77 I honestly have no idea how Simon Biles's body stays together given the insane stuff she does. Today's gymnastics are crazy difficult. But it's good to look back and see this kind of old school grace ane elegance. Nobody I know nails landings like Nadiya.
What a joy for for the jury and the rest of the stadium to watch this. I'm not so much into gymnastics as I would describe my own flexibility as that of a wooden door but even if your're not into this sport this will give you shivers! This is so much better than the things we see these days; this years Olympics for example. This is much more difficult, elegant and natural. She makes it look so easy and look at how fast she's doing it. These days it's more like loose parts in a routine; Nadia makes it a performance.
Well, a lot has happened in gymnastics since the 70s, namely a massive change to the code of points that increasingly puts a strong emphasis on difficulty in the attempt to have more objective judging. The result is artistry is downplayed which is why we don't see the same lyricism and artistic creativity in gymnastics nowadays. Back then, a gymnast needed to be more "well-rounded" with regards to technique and artistry...so Nadia was definitely more elegant and enchanting in her performance (as were most gymnasts of that era) because the code of points called for that. But the gymnastics of today is much more difficult if you look at it from a purely technical standpoint. The same can be said of, say, figure skating. Male skaters of today are doing quads regularly (and are said to require them to be any bit competitive with the rest of the field) whilst way back when, a skater only had to do doubles to win medals.
Jennaboo Gymnists today wouldn’t qualify for the Olympics back then either, what’s your point? Olympic sports have evolved throughout the years, back then they favored artistry and creativity in routines. The current Olympics is more focused on power and technicality. Both generations hold unique gymnasts that dominate their era of sports.

I don't care how many people have got it after her but she's the best that will ever be. Each second of her routine is perfect, not one move out of place. This is genius.
Yeah 4 years later at Moscow she gained a lot of height and her overall structure was more like an adult compared to here, but still she won 4 medals and looked incredible as always!
'some people opinions' How about looking at the code of points? There are criterias about how you judge a routine. It's the same like a teacher correcting your test. Does the grade in your test also have no worth just because it is your teacher's 'opinion'? No, because there are clear criterias about correcting the test. The same in judging a routine.
I'm no gymnast, but even I can tell that she is flawless! She's a joy to watch! No fuss, no drama! She just does her thing with a smile on her face and boom! No wonder she got perfect 10s, she's faultless!
I do like watching her routines, but her smile and apparent effortless has definitely been coached into her as was the case with Olga Korbut. Her smile is not a product of her joy. In that sense I do like the fact that nowadays it is okay to look focused and in pain when doing your routines as this is more real to me.
MZ83, from what I heard at the time, Olga Korbut was NOT encouraged to do all that smiling and waving at the audience because attracting personal attention was discouraged by trainers who focused on team oriented effort. In fact, it was the general Soviet attitude in all then-Communist countries, Romania included, to focus on the team--not personal adulation from the audience. Korbut simply enjoyed the cheers of the crowd and returned it with her engaging personality, but privately, she was rebuked for doing it.
Dixie Burge I watched a documentary on Olga Korbut here on UA-cam (can't remember which one, though) in which she even admitted to being encouraged to smile during competition.
MZ83 I agree, however smiling all the way adds on the difficulty level. Looking at an athlete smiling all along such performances adds a LOT to the seemingly fluidity and ease etc. : so much more impressive, it's like looking at a godess doing her stuff as if it was NATURAL...
I like this so much better than most of today's 'routines' because this really is a floating routine. She almost never stands still, it's all one piece, with skills incorporated in it.These days they just pause and stop and pause and stop to show off skills. There's barely a routine left.
Great remark. There is flow, does does feel like most athletes (you see this in also e.i. skating where you FEEL there is a checklist of figures to do and they're "checking them off" one by one and it feels odd in between. Also: GRACE! Beyond athletics, there is finish to the movements from toes to fingers, nothing stiff, artistic touch. BRAVO!
As the product of a Romanian household, I don’t think there exists a Romanian who isn’t immensely proud of Nadia. I was put in gymnastics along with so many other of my friends because of this, lol. Can’t say for gymnastics but as a figure skater the sport nowadays is more about technics than artistic. Everyone is competing for the quads and a lot of people are ignoring the artistic elements, such a shame
@@theoneandonlyme4724 Hi. Regards to technical figure skating. In the 70's I recall the figure skaters doing slow speed figures. It was fasinating to watch the control as they skated on a curved line, circles, figure 8's, etc ... The announcers used to educate the viewers on outside and inside edges, etc... It was fun to watch the concentration on the skaters faces. When they finished, so many were emotional wrecks as it took a toll on them. It was the hardest of the 3 segments of the competition. In Gymnastics, they had compulsories. No more though. These fundamental skills were judged and part of the overall score. I always thought the Soviet Bloc countries and the Russians were beautiful to watch. It seemed the skaters and gymnast in this era were ballet dancers. Their body lines were beautiful. Today -- POWER POWER POWER.
Agree. The ice skating competitions in particular have been ruined for me. The jumps are so difficult it's not uncommon anymore to see them miss and fall.
There’s gymnastics and then there’s artistry. And no one can beat Nadia’s artistry. Just like Gordeeva & Grinkov in pairs figure skating. They’re in a league of their own.
There's something really beautiful about watching Nadia perform. I think she's more talented than Simone Biles. Nadia is just so graceful and powerful and just simply a pleasure to watch. Her lines are straight. Legs and toes tight. Everything perfect. She also got perfect 10s. I don't think I've seen Simone do that. My opinion is Nadia is the best gymnast in history! ❤️ ❤️
Simone Biles. is not even in the same league as Nadia its like comparing Einstein to a high school math teacher. Yes they both know about math but that's where it ends.
Every 4 years more or less, there will be other Simones'. There may never be another Nadia. Simone is very good gymnast, Nadia is a super star; a gymnast that won the hearts and imagination of the world. Like Tiana stated, "It's a completely different sport now..." Under current rules where acrobatics is rated higher than artistic and because she is 8" shorter (a very great height advantage) Simone would probably win against the 1980 Nadia. However, Simone wouldn't have that height advantage over the 1976 Nadia. Therefore, even under current rules, if it was possible for Simone to compete, I would put my money on the 1976 Nadia and it would be no contest under the rules in Nadia's time where elegance, grace, and artistry was just as important as acrobatics.
Jim Thorpe, Babe Ruth, Jesse Owens, Babe Didrikson, Muhammad Ali, Nadie Comaneci, and Michael Jordan are more than outstanding athletes; they are legends. Others may be just as good or better athletes; However, unlike the foregoing, after a dozen years, most people don't even recognize their names especially outside their country.
Hundred rounds of applause for Nadia , having viewed her after 48 years I remembered my childhood when entire family would watch her performance and moved with her skills

She makes it look so easy, doesn't she? And her moves are not like anything the girls are doing now. Wow!
A lot of these moves aren't allowed anymore that's why. They changed the rules.
+Dominique Ivory oooh... why aren't they allowed?
+Rachel It's more to do with changes to the apparatuses and the scoring system. The bars are a lot closer together, so the gymnasts all did those belly bang moves whereas now they are able to do giants, etc. and gain more speed and so do more difficult moves including a lot taken from the men's high bar. They now use a spring floor so are able to do much more difficult tumbling passes than she could. Same with vault and the table vs the horse. The other big change is the way scoring now favours difficulty over perfection and artistry.
+Catherine tt She's from Romania, which was a comunist country, but not part of the Soviet Union.
Yeah. Such a legendary athlete!

For the naysayers who reckon that Nadia's routines were "easy", may I point out that the equipment was completely different back then. The beam, as you can see in the video, is just a block of wood. No springs and no padding. Same with the floor - it's just that, a floor. The strength needed to do the tumbles and passes Nadia did so beautifully, and off a "dead" floor and beam no less, is phenomenal. And they used the old vaulting horse rather than the modern day vaulting table. I would venture an opinion that if Nadia were competing today, she would absolutely be up there with the best.
+ChooseYour Poison the old vaulting horse used to cause serious injury even death....
Mark Peter Yes, that is why they now use the vaulting table
um the floor has lots of springs no offense
Bella Barbee That's OK, no offence taken. Yes floors today do have lots of springs. But the floor here is the old padded floor. They are a leftover from the times when the Soviets dominated gymnastics. Although the modern sprung floors allow for more powerful tumbling, I kind of miss the grace and artistry that the old simple padded floor routines had.

I'm not an expert in gymnastics but this girl was truly remarkable compared to any gymnast I've ever seen. She did everything perfectly.
I agree with you that she was remarkable. She was remarkable for her time, but she cannot compete with the gymnast of today. She would not make the weakest of teams. Nevertheless, Nadia is and will always be a legend in the sport.
+BDP I think if she was that age today and trained like the other gymnast today she would be the best her training was the best they had at that time I can't imagine what she could do now
+Jasmine Mouton that's a very good point!

Yeah you're right. You don't know gymnastics that well if you think this is more difficult. Nadia wouldn't even qualify for the Olympics nowadays.
Jennaboo
Yes she would have stepped up to the plate
Jennaboo Gymnists today wouldn’t qualify for the Olympics back then either, what’s your point? Olympic sports have evolved throughout the years, back then they favored artistry and creativity in routines. The current Olympics is more focused on power and technicality. Both generations hold unique gymnasts that dominate their era of sports.

I do like watching her routines, but her smile and apparent effortless has definitely been coached into her as was the case with Olga Korbut. Her smile is not a product of her joy. In that sense I do like the fact that nowadays it is okay to look focused and in pain when doing your routines as this is more real to me.
MZ83 effortlessness I meant

Whis music is this
Bulimia and anorexia definitely helped keep it artistic
It’s a completely different sport now it’s like comparing America football to football they both have a ball but they’re very different
That's because they changed the scoring system
Jim Thorpe, Babe Ruth, Jesse Owens, Babe Didrikson, Muhammad Ali, Nadie Comaneci, and Michael Jordan are more than outstanding athletes; they are legends. Others may be just as good or better athletes; However, unlike the foregoing, after a dozen years, most people don't even recognize their names especially outside their country.
Hundred rounds of applause for Nadia , having viewed her after 48 years I remembered my childhood when entire family would watch her performance and moved with her skills
With 7 perfect 10’s Nadia is “the” GOAT and always will be.
Agreed, the people who say Simone Biles is the best ever have clearly never seen this girl.
@@EvidensInsania Simone biles no tiene elegancia de Nadia ni de lejos!
@@EvidensInsania I'll take Mary Lou Retton over Simone biles. Mary like Nadia was perfect in everything.
When gymnastic was still a poetic expression... So beautiful to watch...
Nadia is just stunning to watch .. poetry in motion!!
The way she makes it look so easy is astonishing... The best ever
Can never have enough of Nadia! Makes every Romanian proud! Besides the fact that her performance here was perfect, she is full of joy! So adorable! ❤️
So smooth. She makes it look easy, almost like she's dancing, never saw a gymnast with movements like this, it looks effortless.
Un fulg alb ,usor ,inocent, de zapada! Astazi implineste 60 de ani. ,,la multi ani!" Iubita NADIA.
Pesaba 38 kilos.
