Using ballads as a practicing tool can be a very effective way to expand you're knowledge of harmony upon the fingerboard. We're all so often caught up in playing fast, which scale to use, is my technique clean enough and such thoughts that we're often our own worst enemies. By practicing at slower tempos it strips much of that away and leaves us with questions such as, are we using space effectively within our bass line? Are we playing dynamically? Are we representing the harmony well enough with our bass line as the chords pass by. Essentially, it gives us time to think!
I don't think I can express how important this was to my progression as a bass player and musician and I urge you to use this approach in your own practice time. Whatever chord sequence you're working on, try it at a slow tempo for before you start to play it up to speed. I usually work on things for around 1 week before cranking up the speed.

Love your lessons. I realize this is a video posted a long time ago but if I could make one suggestion it would be this: When you play with a backing track, please turn the bass volume up a bit more or the backing track volume down a bit. Thanks!

As for ballads, I usually prefer using a fretless. 80s style ;-) Now THAT's a great tool to toy around with dynamics!

Great tutorial! I am not a bass player, but as a synthesist/electronic composer I love trying to get my tracks to sound as authentic as possible, and these really help me approach my sequencing and playing bass on a synth more dynamically and more realistically. Thanks!

Erik Scott is the master when it comes to using the bass in different ways. Being with Alice Cooper, Signal, Sonia Dada, and so many more, you will be very surprised on his solo albums. It's like Nu-World or something. When ES plays, people know it. Just saying. This is nice too.

Brilliant lesson, Scott! I think I've learned the most as a bassist from playing really simple tunes. Make each of those notes count and it allows you to build a stronger foundation for more complex or 'showy' stuff as well. Really digging being back into your lessons after some time off :-)

This was probably the best lesson I've seen in a while. The best example of this in a song I can think of at the moment would be Micheal McDonald's "I Keep Forgettin'". Louis Johnson really dials it back and locks in, making for a sterling track altogether.

Great lessons but i think that at some point you've gotta give for granted that the student already knows chord tones. You've got a lot of lessons going through the chord tones (btw, in the key of C..) and for the ones that already went through them, kinda holds them back.
