Lotta hack bassists and bass instructors out there. Scott, by contrast, is the real deal man. He's like my older brother. Like a mentor. Always having my back. I appreciate what you do Scott and I tell every musician I know about you. Peace.

Its just as important what you dont play as what you do. you have to feel the music.
I've never lost this and felt it straight away.
    Great lesson Scott.

I've been playing over 20 years and have studied at Berklee so this stuff isn't really new to me, but I gotta say you have a great teaching style. Young guys and gals these days don't know how good they have it to have stuff like this so readily available to them. At the same time it can often stop them from learning how to read and transcribe. When I started learning reading and transcribing was the only way you had to learn new stuff. Great work my man.

I am pro drummer for like 20+ years and teacher. I play bass only for fun as a hobby. The lesson is amazingly pleasant, extremely simple and few orders of magnitude move valuable than those you get for bucks on Amazon. Scott not just shows how to play it best, not just explains it simply, but also inspires you to the level you just drop everything, grab your bass and start experimenting.

I've been through several beginner bass lessons on UA-cam and this, by far, has helped the most! Scott, you are an incredible teacher that lays the right info out to learn quickly and then just go back and rehearse what I've learned... and I would like to Thank you because I appreciate it so very much! You are going to be my new best friend until I master this lesson and then I'll start looking into programs you offer. ;)

This is the best lesson on positions for playing scales I've seen yet! Knowing the patterns for when the root note is under your first, second and fourth fingers is gives you only three easily distinguishable patterns you can with use all over the fretboard. Over time, once you have them memorized well you can expand them to get all the "missing" positions.

What a wonderful lesson! I'm learning to play bass. But my basses are under mainteance in this moment. I was reading something of musical theory, and with this lesson, I see the scales, the music and How to practice, how to learn, how to build up a great structure, from another perspective! Thank you very much from Colombia!

an absolute MUST watch for "stuck in a rut" bass players like myself that copy baselines to play in a covers band. its helped with fills that make my bass playing more individual to me. ???? hope that makes sense lol thanks very much.

Scott! Thank you so much for your lesson! I have had such a hard time with remembering the notes on the fret-board! It has been driving me NUTS. Now I see what your talking about! listen to the note, watch your hand, sing the note, and move through the first scale then the third then the second and mix it up! The backing track is the way to learn it! Just go slow and sing along and look at the fret board where the note's are coming from, then you can remember it! And it doesn't matter when you change keys the pattern will show where to go! Thank so much Clifford Campbell. of Helio Raie.

mr. devine your video's are SO AWESOME you explain the theoretic's of da bass so clear and in a relative way. That said... "visualizing" as in looking at the neck/fingerboard is ok when you start out playing and are trying to get the hang of it ... but please advise your students to write the said patterns on a white board or scribble them on a big piece of paper.
what this will do is force train the so called " finger-memory" and make it so the player can better communicate (eyecontact)
    cheers

This lesson is a really good one to loop back around on. I started following Scott's lessons a few months ago, and after much practice I felt like I had my 3 positions down and I was getting the hang of it, but then I hit the "trough of despair" (plateau of despair?). I know the positions, but I didn't seem to be getting any better, or any closer to being able to play scales like Scott. Watching it again tonight though... Hell I missed a bunch of stuff, so... Back to it. Damn bass piece of s*&t!

I went to Wikipedia to find out about Focal Dystonia. I guess it is most common in musicians, surgeons and others who use excessive fine motor movements. The article even mentioned Scott and his use of gloves. I wanted to know because I sometimes have painful skin outbreaks and was curious if playing with a glove on were possible. Thanks you Moonturkey, I wasn't aware that you got bombarded with this question.

They're individual single saddle units - so each string has its own separate bridge almost - does that make sense lol?! I have had strings rotate before - I get around it by kind of swizzling them around when I'm fitting them. Great to hear you're enjoying the lessons! Scott

It's a custom Overwater bass made in the U.K. It has a 33" scale neck and super tight string spacing - which is why the neck looks so slim. Glad you liked the lesson man! ez, Scott.

  • @devinebass
    @devinebass  12 років тому

It depends whether you're soloing over that progression or not. It's all in the key of G major - so essentially you could use a G major scale over the entire thing and it would sound correct. But, it's nice to target certain chord tones etc to give a bit of variety too. As far as just playing a bass line... It depends... you don't have to start on the roots all the time, you can really mix things up which is why being a bass player is AWESOME lol! Thanks for watching man! Scott
