I have been going to Kurashige for a little less than a year now and I have found that their selection is extensive, the staff is friendly and supportive, and the owner and CEO, Mr. Kurashige is a wealth of knowledge. He has offered me help in so many different things I have been try to do, such as replacing a used Nomi (Japanese chisel) handle or finding a large Ryoba Pull Saw (Japanese Double Edged Pull Saw).

I’ve been woodworking for about ten years and at this point I get all of my hand tools either from Kurashige, Lee Valley, or Lie Nielsen. Kurashige is incredible and the quality of the tools is unmatched. For the quality, the prices are totally competitive and sometimes you’ll even find a good deal. I got a gorgeous timber framing chisel from them that’s over 12” long and 1 1/2” wide for about $90. It’s my favorite chisel and I have many very nice chisels. I cannot recommend Kurashige enough.

Hida is small, a little hole in the wall, but they do have some good stuff. A half decent selection of Gyokucho and a small selection of chisels, sharpening stones, etc.

yup, it took me some time and research to fill the cart with all that I need to begin hand wood working. The package has arrived, took less than a week to ship across the globe. Opening the box with all of the hand tools, stones and misc was like christmas morning. I realize this sounds like a paid advertisement haha but I will not hesitate to order from them again.
Hello, thank you very much for introducing this store. I am just in Japan and I may be a simple woodworking enthusiast but I appreciate the Japanese art of woodworking very much. I have always wanted to learn this trend, and in my country I have practically no access to it. Tomorrow I plan to go there and buy myself some "starter kit".

Nice! I am glad you were able to find a nice plane. They continual get new tools in from different blacksmiths. Every time I go there I see something new.
Kurashige Tools is amazing. I've bought many tools from them over the years and never had any problems with shipping to the USA. They have a quick turnaround on orders and Yamasuke Kurashige speaks great English so never had any problems with communication.
Gee whiz I wish this was my experience. I've been asking for quotes for a month now and still waiting. The guy freaking with it says he's the only one working on online orders. A month for a quote?

@@RichardDenRooyen1973 This is incredible. I have sent 6 emails and 3 chats since beginning February. I have even translated my simple requests into Japanese to elicit a sympathetic response. Nothing. Last time I got a response was 3 weeks ago. I am SO frustrated. I have decided to spend half of what I was originally. The "Yamasuke" guy is just the pits to me. Never had worse service in my life, and I am from Africa originally.
I have many many chisels including the cryogenically hardened Narex Richter chisels from the Czech Republic but by and far I love my 1/4” Japanese chisel more than all the rest.
All I can say is thank you... This video is exactly what I have spent almost a year trying to find. Because of this video I finally found what I was looking for.

My interest is metal-smithing. Regardless of whether it is wood or metal that you work, the Japanese are the finest craftspeople in the world. They are just so talented.
I moved back to woodworking after my elbow made it clear that 10 years of blacksmithing was enough. It doesn't matter what you're working with, I've always admired the dedication and skill shown by Japanese craftspeople. Regardless of the material, whether metal, wood, textiles, or something else, there's always somebody who amazes and inspires me.
I've purchased a number of tools from this shop and can say the tools are top notch!! Be careful though,1 purchase was a saw that cost £200 and once it got to England customs slapped tax and handling charge which cost an extra £48 but the saw was worth that bit extra Nagakatsu 240mm ryoba and it cuts like butter and so straight! Great shop

Thanks for posting this visit to Kurashige, I would get lost there for hours. I have bought two kannas from them recently and in 2019 my first kanna from Hamono-san which you shared earlier. Can't wait to visit them once the covid restrictions lift.

Japanese tools are fascinating for the way they have been designed and crafted for thousand of years ago; besides, there are tons of selection for a wood enthusiast to choose from. I was once suggested by a local Japanese friend to switch to Japanese tools, and that I was hooked and never return to anything that wasn't made in Japan again.

I just attended the Kezuroukai in Hokkaido. I would say that is a great event and good opportunity to meet with other craftsman.

There are two big chisels styles one for pushing and the other for hammering. Pushing type is called Tsuki-Nomi and the hammering type is called Anaya-Nomi.

There are so many different tools and just for chisels the prices range!!!!!!! We need a catalog and a mentor just to understand why and how to understand quality and cost for each item. it overwhelms be to try to understand!
Hi, tools in Japan are wide ranging. I've noticed that some tools work for some better than others. I think Tasai and Funahiro make great chisels. Easy to sharpen and they keep an edge for a while. I often go to second hand shops to pick up tools and refurbish them and these chisels are also great. Perhaps much of the pricing in Japan is based on the demand. I think there are a lot of young blacksmiths making great tools out there.

I believe ever person will have some challenges and different challenges if working in Japan and in the carpentry scene. I couldn't recommend a path or a person to contact as I myself am still working through this. Having some construction or carpentry experience would likely be helpful. Acquisition of tools and dedication of time to the craft is the biggest challenge. Miya Daiku (Temple Carpenters) are a unique group and they often work alone on contractual basis. It is a difficult field to get into, but an extremely fascinating one.

What's the purpose of those long chisels?
They are useful when you have to carve a deep mortise or for larger and deeper joint carving.
Such amazing carpenteybut it almost seems like some things are almost a hindrance/ detriment to structureal strength/integrity in place of un needed complexity

Those are what you can see in a museum. You will find good tools at a reasonable price if you visit the Kurashige website or their shop.

I love this store and have spend thousands in their website. But they never respond to any emails even written in Japanese regardless of the platform I try like Instagram, website ect. (always full of politeness and courtesy of course) Pity, I have a budget of $10,000. I just need a drawknife badly and some other things they probably have in store but not on their website. They must not like foreigner business. 😂

Does make me cringe a bit seeing you handle some of the tools without gloves... oil and sweat from your skin speed up rust, and some of these tools (especially that tsuki nomi) are worth hundreds of dollars, thousands in the case of that Ichihiro set.
Torture. Sweet hellish torture. But at some point I'm going to cave in and Max out my credit card there.
