Just FYI - Minka is a generic term used for non-Samurai housing. The Kanji literally means People's House 民家. Traditionally, Minka were the dwellings of farmers, artisans, and merchants. And the Kominka name, means it is a Minka that was constructed more than 50 years ago. The "Ko" part is the Kanji for old. Thus Kominka 古民家 means it is a farmers house, older than 50 years.

This has got to be one of my favourite episodes, total departure from your NZ life, but a brilliant glimpse into another culture. So my question is then Scott, when are you going to do a hosted trip to Japan for woodworkers/avid DIYers? It could be a really cool thing to offer. I've often thought about visiting Japan, but now I'm hooked. And of course the opportunity to stock up on all those wonderful Japanese tools.
    Cheers Peter

It's so cool seeing you both in such a different context, half way around the world and yet still able to weave your craft into the broader narrative! Japan looks like a fascinating place and Nikita's bold leap into the unknown is certainly paying off. Keep the great videos coming and I hope the remainder of your trip continues to bring delightful surprises like this episode did for me!

Nikita, you're living my perfect imagined life (rural Japan ... traditional dwelling ... being an apprentice at such a fantastic carpentary workshop [hello Futohi-San ! ] .. a mountain chair lift by a lake near your house .. I'm so envious ! ). I wish Nikita many dragonflies in life. I wish everyone many dragonflies in life ! But those long toothed death monkeys. No, I don't wish those on everyone. I'd be on DefCon 5 immediately if they showed up 🙃 All the best and greetings from Prague ! I will stay in that guesthouse one day hopefully

昭和二年九月卄八, September 28, 1927. Nowadays 20 in Japanese is written as 二十 (/ni-juu/ literally "two tens") but before it was written as 廿 and before that it was written as 卄 (literally two 十 "ten" together) which is the way it's shown here. So, that writing is extremely archaic.

This is such a lovely video on so many levels. You folk were meant to meet up and be part of changing a part of the universe.
Wouldn’t it be fantastic to live in a country where you have randomly placed bronze warriors in the bush, and nobody’s trying to hack it up and steal it.
And a local beautifying committee. And a community speaker in your house. Barking deer and random monkeys and snakes. So many levels.

I have a friend from NZ (he's originally from Yorkshire) who lives in Japan. He sent me some photos he and his wife took of these, human-sized cabbage-patch-like "dolls" - it's the best way of describing them - in the country. Just stunning. They were just sitting around enjoying the view and are there all year around, and the locals dress them for the seasons. One was even on a swing in a tree.
