I think Sabo popping up in Dressrosa worked better for people reading weekly, just because it had been a few years since Ace died so it felt less like we were immediately replacing him with a new brother. And the callbacks to stuff from absolutely ages ago always hit harder when you're reading in real time.

    Running notes that I'll edit:
    - Gavin! You've already been to an island that's based on Egypt-- Alabasta!
    - Doflamingo and Dressrosa is what happens if Crocodile was successful in Alabasta!
    - The frame of Robin tied down by the Tontattas is a direct reference to the Liliputians capturing Gulliver in Gulliver's Travels.
    - Barto is us, the One Piece Fans! Lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-lu-luffy senpai!!!
    - Doflamingo's control of other people was demonstrated in the beginning of Chapter 234. He was in that meeting with the Marines and was controlling those two Vice Admirals and making them draw their swords.
    - Bellamy's story is so tragic. He's chosen to devote his life to the wrong man. It's like watching a classmate fall into the wrong crowd, start going down "the pipeline".
    - Did you remember Koala? The little girl from the Fisher Tiger flashback? I think it's awesome she found her way to join Dragon and the Revolutionary Army.
    - A few others have mentioned this in comments, but Usopp developed his Sogeking persona as a direct result of wanting to rescue Robin. His actions at Enies Lobby were to save his crewmate. The moment Robin turned into a doll, all that development disappeared, Sogeking disappeared. Usopp is willing to fight his fear in order to save his crew, but once Robin disappears from his memory, it's just him, all alone, so he runs. But in spite of that, he came back! He battled his fears and won for his own goal to be a brave warrior of the sea. Courage isn't the absence of fear, and Usopp has to overcome so much more fear each time he acts, compared to the monster trio of Luffy/Zoro/Sanji, who are fearless. HAIL GOD USOPP!
    Personal Theory/Wishful Thinking:
Usopp's last name hasn't been revealed. I think it would be lovely if his last name was Montblanc.

Also Barto might be one of my new fav characters, I was ready to write him off to begin with but he won me over so hard haha. And ahhh thank you for reminding me of Doflamingo's powers and how they were seen earlier, I totally forgot about that scene!

About that part of Usopp being a coward: Because Robin got turned into a toy, she was basically forgotten. And one of Usopp's biggest character development was during Enies Lobby. He found a spark of bravery in that arc because of their motivation to save Robin. So forgetting Robin takes away that part of him down the drain.

Ok so first pardon how long this comment is going to be, I just have a ton of thoughts, and also I just wanna talk about Sabo. I wanna talk about other stuff in this arc too but I think this is just going to be my Sabo comment and I'll do a seperate comment on arc info and stuff.
So ok wanna lead with it's perfectly fine to not like Sabo, if you ever worry about people being upset if you end up not liking him please don't. Everyone is free to have their own thoughts and feelings on characters, and I totally get not liking Sabo. But as someone who does like Sabo and adores the ASL brothers I do want to talk about him. To just give you the thoughts of someone who gets happy whenever they see Sabo on a page.
Also again sorry for the length I just wanna take both our perspectives on this into consideration cause I know our experiences with One Piece are rather different.
So I never had an issue wtih Sabo, I actually knew of him long before I meet him in story.
Way back around 2012 I had Ace's death spoiled for me, long before I ever read Marine Ford last year. So I have had a very long time in which I knew Ace did not make it, so when I did eventually read the whole series I went in knowing that, and I personally didnt start getting supper attached to Ace himself till Marine Ford and Post War. My view on him prior was pretty much all coming from the view of, Luffy loves his brother, his death is going to really affect him. And by the time I came to care about Ace apart from Luffy he was already dead. So the introduction of an aditional brother did not bother me instead it made me rather happy.
I know this was way different for you, that Ace is someone you adored dearly, and I do get this, I have my own character in One Piece that I'm like this with and I even indent to get a tattoo for. (Like you im also a widow) I completely get that Sabo blindsided you and after losing Ace you really wanted to just focus on him and not have a new character thrown into the mix. (I know you are aware of the hints towards a 3rd sibling but really those hints are so nothing that they dont really count until in retrospect. So I dont think those hints should be taken as a You should have seen this coming sort of thing at all)
I knew of Sabo prior cause well I've been consuming manga and anime for a very long time and with series like One Piece I had seen countless images and gifs and such way before I would really tackle the series myself, so I knew a 3rd kid existed for a long time now. So whenI started Post War I went "OH I know this kid cool nice to finally meet him" And given the loss of Ace I was just also eatting up all the content of him as a kid and I was so glad that he had had someone else in his life that he loved and that loved him. That as a small child Ace wasnt totally alone.
I love Post War, it's one of the few arcs I went to go watch in the anime because I wanted to see more content between Ace, Luffy and Sabo. I totally get having just lost Ace and not liking the sudden third sibling because it can very much feel like a replacement. But I dont think Sabo was/don't view him as that. Beyond their personalities being rather different there is also their roles in the story.
Sabo in Post War served a lot of purpose
    * He gave us a nobel born character who rejected the corrupt and evil views of the people he grew up around, who was able to look at the way the nobels treated others and go this is wrong. We do have good royalty in the series like Vivi but Sabo was our first example of a nobel who was born into a bad household and chose to go against that
    * He was Ace's first friend. Sabo and Ace meet each other when they were just 5, that meant for the 5 years prior to Luffy showing up Ace wasnt alone. I really needed that, Ace had such a tragic and lonely childhood that knowing he wasnt all alone up till the age of 10 was a relief. Ace had such self worth and identiy issues, as well as sucidial tendencies that idk if he would have made it to 10 if he didnt have someone by his side.
    * He acted as the middle ground between Luffy and Ace. I really love the brothers dynamic, the way each of them play off each other was something I really enjoyed in Post War and given how hostile Ace was at the time you really needed a middle man who could help bridge the gap between Ace and Luffy as their bond formed.
    * He encoutnered Dragon and helped fuel Dragon's cause, showing him how the nobels of Goa are so corrupt they broke a child born amongst their ranks, making a child ashamed to have been born a nobel.
    * Sabo's death changed Luffy and Ace.
    Part 1/2

    • @roxan_1314
      @roxan_1314 Рік тому +30

The loss of Sabo helped pushed Ace to be a better big brother and is also what gave us the scene of Luffy wanting to be stronger. To get a scene like that, where Luffy as a child desperately wanted to get stronger so he would never lose someone again, he had to suffer a loss. We needed someone to exist for Luffy to lose then. This plays into the whole series, in the pre time skip we see how protective Luffy is of his crew, how one by one he beats down the people who stand agaisnt them, blowing through the East Blue like a force of Nature that couldn't be stopped. And then during Post War we go from this young Luffy who wants to get stronger, to Luffy leaving Windmill Villiage calling out to his brothers, to Luffy broken and crying saying that he's so weak.
I don't think the "I'm so weak" scene would have hit me nearly as hard as it did without Sabo. Oda showing us that since he was a child Luffy wanted to get stronger, not just cause of some generic little kid think like "imma be the strongest" but because "I wanna be strong enough so I dont lose someone I care about ever again." Luffy wanted to be strong enough so he would never lose anything again. And then he lost Ace. For that line to exist Luffy had to lose someone as a kid.
As for Sabo being alive and not dead, well one you kinda just woudn't keep him dead. Story wise, expecially in manga, you wouldnt introduce a character the way you did Sabo, kill them off screen, then keep them dead. Cause it would mostly be a waste of a character, to introduce a new rather big character into the story and only keep them around for such a short time.
Also I would suggest checking out chapter 589 if you have the time, I wont say more cause idk if you would consider this a spoiler or not.
Then back during Punk Hazard we see an image of Ace and Whitebeards graves, Ace's grave has the newspaper of Luffy's return on it as well as 3 sake cup and a bottle in front of it. Sabo is the only one that would know about their promise that would have visited the grave since obviously Luffy didn't. So this was another hint of his return. Then yes at the end of 731 it is rather clear it's Sabo. Im assuming you were mostly in denail about it being him since you werent a fan of his inclusion in Post War. XD But again the three sake cups, which again would and could only be Sabo. Also I would suggest reading the last two pages of 731 again. I think it would help with some of your questions you have about Sabo.
As for where Sabo has been, given the info you have of him so far he's been with the revolutionaries, with Dragon and them. He's the chief of staff, so a very high up role and has worked with them for at least several years given his position. Also I know youre wondering why he wasnt at marine ford. Ill play devils advocate right now and just say the world of One Piece is huge, he could have been out of the grandline, in the new world, or anywhere at the time of Marine Ford. Mostly you gotta wait and see but again final pages of 731 cause Sabo does greatly regreat not being there that day.
Also idk if you caught it but Koala, Sabo's partner, is the little girl who was on Fisher Tigger's ship. And shes now a master of Fishman Karate! I know you dont mention everything you catch but didnt know if you remembered that Koala was that little slave girl.
As for the Mera Mera no Mi, I really couldn't imagine anyone else having it. Luffy obviously cant eat it and it wouldnt really suit anyone on the crew, for one we just dont need any more anchors than we already have and I also dont think anyone would take it. And I didn't want it to go to a random character. The fruit felt like a part of Ace's soul something that should be given to someone who would cherish it and value having it, not just due to the power of the fruit but also because it was the fruit Ace once had. Sabo is really the only character that fit that bill. Anyone else we know of who was close to Ace already has a fruit, or wouldnt really fit it. So when I read these chapters for the frist time i was estatic when Sabo showed up. I stayed up late reading till he got the fruit, rolling around on my bed all giddy that he had it, Sabo got it the fruit was safe it was with Ace's family. And then proceeded to speed through the remaineder of the arc because I had to see every Sabo scene I had to know what would happen with him from there.
Sabo just makes me happy. I love that he loves Luffy, I find him baddass and cool and I love the impact he had on Ace and Luffy when they were kids as well as the potential for his character and role after he is reintroduced.
And then ok about Sabo being a replacement Ace, I have often seen Sabo jokenly called Ace 2.0 on multiple occasions. If you see Sabo as just a replacement Ace really comes down to the person. There are several simularities between them but they are also still both their own characters and Sabo's role in the story is much different from Ace's. So i think calling him Ace 2.0 or Ace Lite or Second Ace or whatever isnt really fair to him or Ace. yes they are both Luffy's older brothers, yes they are both high end commmanders in large forces, yes they both have issues with their birth parents, yes they both were/are the users of the Mera Mera no Mi. But I think as you get to know Sabo you'll come to see him as his own character and not another Ace. He's more of a mirror to Ace not meant to be someone there to just take his place.
Though I cant touch too much on Sabo's character without potentially touching spoiler territory.
I know this comment is a long one but I just wanted to say this to just give another view on Sabo. I really enjoy his character and I know part of that comes down to me being a sucker for siblings in media. You give me siblings in a story im going to be a sucker for them and often take greater interest in their relationship. My One Piece shelf is decked out in a number of stuff but a lot of it is ASL stuff, and I even have a one piece tattoo i wanna one day get that will incorporate something for the ASL brothers. So I know im very biased towards Sabo and I also have a very different connection to Ace. I still adore him but his death did not break me, did not hurt me the way I know it did for you.
If you happened to read all this really thank you, I know this is rather long but I just dont feel like a short comment on Sabo would have been able to express my thoughts on him. I have more but imma stop here, for sake of length and cause I dont want to worry about spoiling things for you by saying too much.

@@roxan_1314 I'm so sorry to hear you're a widow too 😭 also I super appreciate long comments and the time you took to write this, I am always craving more perspectives and it really helps with contextualising characters I may not have given the best chance, though I do agree and love what you know of my experience and my own attachment to Ace.
It was actually your comment about Sabo being Ace's first friend that hit me. I didn't quite see that even though I knew deep down that must have been true, and how important Sabo was to Ace, just like how important Ace was to Luffy. It's making me rethink Sabo's placement in the story considering all I could think of while reading Post-War and now Dressrosa is that he's just filling the hole that Ace left in every way (big brother, Ace's devil fruit, using his moves). Your interpretation of the "I'm so weak" scene and Luffy already feeling loss before Ace, only to then feel it again, also hits for me. Also, I totally missed Koala and now that makes me even more happy!
Honestly your comment has helped a lot. I think I know deep down you are so correct that he is not Ace 2.0 and not there as a replacement, and if anything, and I do mention this in the video, he will be able to continue honouring Ace and furthering his legacy by being Luffy's big brother AND having Ace's powers, it's like Ace is alive again within Sabo and that does make me happy - I think I'm just blinded by grief still. Everything you say is perfect and I 100% agree with it all, but the emotional side of it is making me think the worst of the situation because of how much I miss Ace. It almost still feels too soon, and I wonder if binge-reading the series doesn't help with that because Marineford really wasn't that long ago when I read it (2 months now wow), so the wounds are still fresh, whereas if I'd maybe read it weekly and it had been years, my wounds would have healed and I would have welcomed Sabo more graciously.
Fortunately I'm not closed off to Sabo's character at all. I don't want to write him off and there's a big part of me that's excited to see what happened between Luffy and Sabo to get Sabo into the Lucy disguise, as I'm sure it was a heck of a reunion. I want to see Luffy happy and to heal more than anything, and I definitely see Sabo's return doing that for him. I just need to get my heart out of the situation and use my head more. I thought I would have been over Ace's death by now but damn, the focus on Ace and his devil fruit, and about family and brotherhood that I saw in the early part of this arc, makes Sabo's return perfect, but there's that niggling part of me that's thinking "Ace should be here too". Thank you for opening my eyes and heart a little more to Sabo, because of your comment I feel a nice long speech coming in part two that will hopefully help with me accepting Sabo.

@@GavinReadsItAll Roxan’s explanation pretty much covers everything. I just wanted to point out one thing. When you get to Sabo’s explanation for his absence later in the story just keep in mind to get a full understanding of the situation you need to be a native Japanese speaker. We as English readers miss out on the context because we don’t have an understanding of the Japanese language or culture. Basically the word “Sakazuki” is a homonym for Akainu’s birth name and the oath taken by Luffy, Ace, and Sabo. Akainu is actually a military codename. Sakazuki is also the name of the oath ceremony taken by yakuza gang member’s when they are initiated into the organization. New recruits exchange a cup of alcohol with the boss of the mafia group and pledge loyalty. In the case of One Piece the boys used the Sakazuki tradition to validate their bond. When I learned that Sakazuki was a homonym in Japanese, I started to realise no matter how many times we read the series we will never have the full context of the story as non native speakers so I really appreciate it when fans notice this stuff and explain it to the rest of us.

First a few corrections to help you a bit. Fujitora is not a Vice Admiral, he's an Admiral. Since Aokiji stepped down & Akainu became fleet admiral, Navy needed two new ones. Kizaru is the only one that remained. Admiral is almost as scary as an Emperor, Vice Admiral not even close. Also Blackbeard betrayed the navy when he recruited the Impel Down prisoners & he became one of the 4 Emperors instead of Whitebeard, as revealed at the end of Fishman Island. But now, to alleviate your heart. What if I told you that we saw Sabo's cameo in the manga earlier than Ace was introduced? Ace debuted in Drum Kingdom but we saw Sabo on 1st panel of the last page of chapter 98 in Logue Town and in chapter 99 too. It makes perfect sense that Sabo was there since it's Dragon who saved Luffy from being decapitated by Buggy & from Smoker. And let alone that Ace always had the crossed S "ASCE" tattoo, since he thought his brother was dead. That makes it even more beautiful that he inherits his will.

1:47:32 What happens here is absolutely terrifying from usopp's perspective, if you think about it.
Robin was changed in to a toy, therefore everyone forgets her. It's like she never existed. Usopp might know someone important was just erased, he might also have no idea. But we for sure know, that he doesn't know a Robin anymore. He can't remember anything to do with her either, no Robin, no enies lobby, no Sogeking. a big part of him was just completely erased, and he probably doesn't even know. He can just tell that a lot of people were just defeated, but he has no idea who. He can speculate, but all he sees is a bunch of toys on the floor and all he knows is how sugars powers work.

29:19 Dagama design is a reference to Dr. Eggman from Sonic. That's probably why it feels familiar.
35:00 The Barrier Barrier fruit is called Bari Bari no Mi in Japanese. The "no Mi" part is "fruit", while coincidentally this one reference the English word barrier, so not a good example. Many fruits use onomatopoeias for the name, i.e. the Flame Flame fruit is called "Mera Mera no Mi" because mera is the Japanese onomatopoeia used for flames.
1:48:00 Usop forgot about Robin entirely, so he found himself there without any real investment in what he was doing, so I think it's understandable that he just run away on instinct.
1:54:50 If you compare Kyro's flashback with Rebecca's flashback, you will notice how Kyros was "removed" in the same scenes due Sugar's devil fruit.

but with more chapters with sabo, it becomes more clear how he's his own person (both personality-wise and his role in the story and all). at least for me hehe. i'm happy you're giving him a chance :)
onto the other parts!!! i'm glad you're enjoying dressrosa so far and really looking forward to part 2. i've recently reread this arc and wow it's really a wild emotional ride and lots of adrenaline rush (and binge-reading it really is the best, because some of one piece's best points is the build-ups and all the little details that we could miss/forget when reading weekly. i remember how hard it was reading dressrose when the chapters were still being released weekly ahaha).

Also the first thing with Senor Pink and the bra... he didn't eat it lol... he used it as a handkerchief to wipe the tomato off his face 😂
Don't worry, he is no creep or interested in that bra, he is too hard-boiled for that.

He has his own distinctive personality with his own set of principles and emotional baggage. His narrative similarities with Ace really begins and ends with them both being Luffy's brother. Other than that, he has a completely different function in the story as a revolutionary and not a pirate. Also, I can promise you that Ace has not being forgotten by the story!
A couple of things you might have missed: Koala is the same Koala from Fisher Tiger's flashback, Doflamingo ~sort of~ already hinted at his backstory in chapters 712 and 722 (though you probably already read his actual flashback since you're a video ahead on Patreon), Fuijitora is an Admiral and not a Vice Admiral (remember that Akainu got promoted and Aokiji left, so the Navy had two back fill two vacancies).

The "sabo feels like a replacement for ace" critique is fairly common, and i understand where it comes from, but it never resonated with me bc rly what ur doing when thinking abt it that way is reducing ace to just "luffys brother". Ace was his own fully fledged character with his own character arc that was told brilliantly from start to finish, luffy having another brother doesn't change or minimize a single thing abt that. Ace and Sabo do have one thing in common that ties them together very strongly tho, which is their role as luffys older brothers and how they look out for him. Oda reintroduces Sabo through this role and similarity, bringing him back to reclaim the flame-flame fruit, symbolizing him carrying on THAT specific part of Ace's will, but u also need to trust Oda to develop him into his own fully fledged character beyond that, something for which a lot of the legwork was already done in postwar, given how a lot of it centered around sabo's own unique circumstances as a character as well as the fact that he's revealed to be a figure in the revolutionary army.
Tldr, sabo is only a replacement for Ace if you view both of them as nothing more than luffys brothers, so ultimately i disagree with that view.

    • @MarikitKaNa
      @MarikitKaNa Рік тому +2

Agree with this, and as for their personalities being similar-- Ace being a nice supportive reliable big bro-- that was also affected by Sabo being the nice brother and then "dying," making Ace consciously try to be softer to Luffy compared to before, when he was the rough brother, because Ace then felt he had to make up for the loss of Sabo.
So while Ace and Sabo seem similar in this way, they weren't as children; though they were like two complementary halves. Sabo's "death" influenced Ace to be more like Sabo, and now that Ace is gone, Sabo is trying to pick up some part of that loss, the same way that Ace did. But beyond that, they are totally different people with different functions in the story.

Honestly with Oda, he gives small little leads as to character stories and sometimes I think that the small thing is not important only for it to come back again and bite me in the butt.
And as for Sabo, totally understandable as to why you feel that way about him. But for me as the eldest of two sisters, who would do anything to have them happy, I love Sabo and I am so happy that in a way Luffy still has his bonds from childhood and that their promise of brotherhood is still holding strong and now symbolically Ace's will is now being carried by both Sabo and Luffy.

So much of his development was in Enies Lobby due to him becoming braver to fight CP9 and bring her back. Without that, he lost his progress. Robin's presence, in particular, was a huge part of his growth, so this is one of the biggest repercussions we see before she is saved and brought back.

If you go back to Sabaody... when they were looking for the places Camie could be in we also got a glimpse of all the prices for a lot of different races of slaves... "the little people" (dwarves/kobito) were in that list... so were the long neck, long leg, and long arms along with mermaids, fishmen and giants... from memory so some of them might not have been visible...

14:30 But Dressrosa is based on Spain, actually. Specifically in Parc Güell, in Barcelona. Barcelona specifically doesn't have a Roman colosseum (but there's one in Tarragona, really closeby), but it does have a much newer one, a bullfighting arena, about 3 miles away from the park. Bullfighting in Spanish, btw, is said "Corrida de Toros", just as in "Corrida Colosseum" in Dressrosa, and that's the reason one of the fighters is Ucy, a bull. The gladiatorial arena is inspired by the Greco-Roman culture, but since they basically owned the whole of Europe, and they built colosseums everywhere, you don't need the setting to be Rome specifically to have the references

BTW, in Dressrosa we have Rebecca, daughter of Scarlet. Scarlet's sister is Violet. Dressrosa is based on Spain. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is Pokemon Dressrosa

Did you just forget how being a Warlord was just for Blackbeard to infiltrate Impel Down and how in Fishman Island Jimbei said he's one of the 4 emperors? That alongside with the 3 great powers being the Navy, 7 Warlords and 4 emperors makes it clear you can't be both at once.

Yes Gavin it shows Mingo using his powers in both Marine ford and before to manipulate people.
Its not super obvious and flashy; so your mind being distracted explains how you missed it.

2:02:58 I don’t think this is ever explicitly said to be the case, but if so I do apologize for the minor spoiler. But I think Robin not talking about Sabo to Luffy is pretty simple to explain away. Sabo asked her not to because he figured they’d run into each other at some point, and wanted to do it himself. Also he didn’t want to distract Luffy from his dreams. Also Luffy just does not care about current events, so his conversation with her about the Time Skip probably went something like: “So where did you go during the two years?” “Oh I was with your father and the Revolutionaries.” “Oh that’s cool :) Sanji can I get some meat?!?”

I'm a bit late and haven't had the chance to read through all the comments so someone may have already reminded you but... around the 29 minute mark you mention an Egypt based island... Gav, did you forget Alabasta existed? Edit: lol you mentioned it like 5 minutes right after, must have just slipped your mind.

i feel like I've left too many sanji comments but here's an interesting tid bit. i feel lke most people (including me) started feeling weird about sanji after the thriller bark scene in which he reveals that he read through the devil fruit encyclopaedia as a child and decided that devil fruits come with "a curse" so the peepin tom no mi was the only devil fruit he'd eat if he came across it. but previously in baratie, when luffy was about to drown sanji didn't jump in to help him till zeff told him that devil fruit users can't swim. did sanji read the entire devil fruit encyclopaedia without reading what that curse was? not likely..did oda forget that interaction and decided to make a dumb gag and setback the character by 350 chapters? maybe.. but its about time we get a reckoning

I'm ready for the reckoning, and I forgot about that interaction so thanks for reminding me of that, that is interesting and makes me think that yeah maybe Oda did just do that as a dumb joke, which kinda sucks

Ussop fled when Robin was turned to stone was because usoop character development was mostly related with Robin and when Robin was turned to toy, the memory related to Robin became vague.

When Bellamy said he lost his crew, i think he meant that his crew didn’t follow him any more. Cuz they are also the ones who laughed at dreams (Skypiea). Maybe only he changed his mind and tried something hard for them to believe.
