Even though he left Vancouver, he was THE first Canuck superstar out there that entertained the crowd and they didn't call him the Russian Rocket for nothing. The caliber he brings out as a goal scorer is mind-blowing and had he been heathy and still playing, he could shatter some real good records. I'm hoping for the Canucks' 40th anniversary, he would be one of the selected inductees as a shoe in for the Ring of Honour since he has done so much for us, especially the 94 finals.
In one of his books Don Cherry talks about one of the Bruin players who used to use his stick a lot on people. Cherry tried to get him to stop but the guy told him that he needed the stick sometimes because it was an "equalizer". Bure took that guy down by kicking the skate out from under him. He didn't knee him or spear him or hurt him. Kicking the skate from behind is a lot better than other things they do in the NHL. Bure was great. One of the most explosive players ever in the NHL.
bure should be a hall of famer, considering he lost a few seasons due to injury, easily in the top 3 of most electrifying players ever to play in the sport
vancouver really needs a championship here, we need the cup here for sure, hopefully gillis can get some light and sign some good players for our club and give us something to cheer about in the 2008-2009 season, we need da CUP!
@sparwood8 I don't recall mentioning any of those people in my comment, I'm pretty sure all I said is that a slough foot is "ONE of the most dangerous plays in hockey". Hitting someone head first into the the boards is more dangerous, I'll agree to that no problem. My point is that a slough foot is almost never accidental and always dangerous. You can hit someone into the boards head first when going in for a clean check and having them turn on you, makes it accidental, occasionally.
Don Cherry said in his book that Pavel was actually a fan of his and came onto the set of Coaches Corner to say Hi to Don. Grapes was actually a fan of Pavel as well (it was the Churla hit that made him a fan)
He would but Ovechkin would get 80 in the early 90s. If Hull hit 86 and Selanne and Mogilny got 76 then it wasn't a tougher era for goal scoring at all. 65 in today's game is simply jaw-dropping. Since 1996, only one other person has scored more goals in a season than Ovechkin this year and last and it's Bure (58 in 99-00 and 59 in 00-01 while missing games too both times).
Cherry also later retracted his "weasel" remark and to this day he thinks Pavel was one of the best "playoff" contender Russians there ever was. He put the Churla hit in his series and said Churla had something coming.
as a die hard nucklehead , i had to wear the golden "Vee" ugly pajams outfit and the black "Vees" were called the Halloween unis because this jersey had some success, it's held in higher regard than mere appearance value would merit
Don Cherry is an Ontarian not a Canadian. He has never been supportive of Vancouver in fact the opposite. This guy actually played for the old Western Hockey League Canucks that won the championship in 1968-69 season before joining the NHL in 1970. Cherry never talks about this part of his career? He has never been a supporter and has always been a harsh critic of the Vancouver franchise for some reason.
I would like to see Bure get more credit for being the best player ever to play the game. Well he is in the top two players with Lemieux for the best! Best Canuck ever!
No one thought he was eligible for the draft or else he would've been gone in the top 10 and since 6th round picks are usually a waste Pat Quinn took a chance and drafted him.
yup. I hate to admit it but I like Ovechkin a lot more than Crosby :P After the hat trick duel where Pittsburgh lost Crosby said something whiny about how it's bad news when a guy from the other team scores three. Bure made a few cheap shots but you can't say that about Ovo, he's a rock 'em sock 'em player.
i think bure is better than ovechkin. Maybe not. its close, but bures numbers were soo damn consistent no matter where he played and no matter what his condition. Even his last season he was putting up amazing numbers and he was ridden with knee problems. If he never had knee problems he could be up there with gretzky.
Grapes is kinda right - he was 0 in puls/minius, but I'd really like to see what he said about his sophomore season, puls 35 and 110 points (60 goals and 50 assists) :D
@cotillion You're missing the point. The CBC(funded by the government) is giving Cherry airtime on a non-hockey issue. No other sports network in North America uses an analyst's time to comment of the deaths of their Armed Forces, Police or Firemen. I'm glad you enjoy Cherry, it's a free country. I've switched to NHL Gamecenter Live they have great analysis on the games.
@ironpirites Grapes said in his book that Pavel because he slew-footed Cam Neely and that's the reason Don called Pavel a weasle but he also stated that he had a different opinion about him after he elbowed Shane Churla in the 94 playoffs, Don actually liked Pavel after that hit.
Well yes I agree then. If Bobby Orr had today's training and equipment, not only would he still dominate, he'd also have the medical technology to keep playing instead of retire at age 31. Yet he also wouldn't average 35 goals, 120 pts. every year either (maybe 30-70-100 though, which is still incredible).
The most talented player ever to play the game. What hurt him was the same thing that destroyed Bobby Orr's career. A bunch of idiots making peanuts who have been long since forgotten by fans took out his knees so he couldn't play. That would have never happened in the 1980s. Then again, Gary Bettman wasn't commissioner in the 1980s.
What Don said was right about pavel being. His cheap shots make Bertuzzi look like a school girl. That being said...Pavel Bure was the greatest player to ever play in Vancouver.Until ROBERTO LUONGO he will deliver us the cup!
Still cant believe he was a fourth rounder even if you know the history of the draft. Seems only the Canucks counted his games correctly to know that he was eligible where everyone else miscounted. How did the Canucks know that they were the only ones to get the count right?
@ironpirites i dont think slough footing is that dangerous of a play either but the only concussion i have recieved in hockey was from a slough foot.. although concussions as serious as they are, are not that serious
I was going to play in the Q, and then broke my femur in a game. It took about a year to rehab and heal, and then I went to the Junior Pirates for a rehab season. I have a full scholarship to BU. Have you ever broken your femur, or anything else major like that? Probably not. Where have you played?
@blackmoore24 because hes supposed to be talking about the games that night. i fhe mentiones the troops, then fair enouf, but he spends almost half of coaches corner talking about them. and bobby orr. get with the times donny.
In that case, a guy like Hull today in his prime would not even score 70 because of that. Nobody can put up 80 today, not even Bure. I was just saying that if Hull, Gretzky and Lemieux could all top 80, Ovechkin could come close to that mark i wide open, high scoring 80s hockey. A lot of snipers today would be getting 50 if the games were as freewheeling.
Oh yeah exactly. I can't believe people fall for it, even after they save up for 3 months to buy a new stick and then it breaks on a backhander after 3 games. That's why I buy Sherwood 5030's in bulk. I can get 4 for like 60 bucks. Not a single one has broke.
@mkcgoalie35 Sorry but you are missing the point. It is a free country, and Cherry should be commended for using a small portion of his time bringing attention to something that should be in the minds of every citizen of this country.
I love Bure hes my fav hockey player of all time and Cherry I also happen to enjoy but I think he is out of line he was just jealous of Bures talent level.
@DylanTownesDrake I have played hockey. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this. People can be hurt in any number of ways playing on skates, but I don't think that manouever is especially dangerous. I've had the skates kicked out from under me many times, mostly by accident, on the ice. I'm not saying one couldn't be hurt that way, but nine times out of ten one wouldn't be, if the intent was simply to unbalance an opponent.
@capsfan7 Don Cherry's the man. Not everything he says is correct, like the rest of us, but he's awesome and the league would be better off if he ran it instead of Betman.
@mkcgoalie35 It's amazing to me that we're so hyperpolitical now that a man is judged based on his political views and not on content of character or his hockey discussion. If people knew Grapes' story, they'd understand what a great man he is. I disagree with him politically (I'm a libertarian), but unlike some people, I can look beyond our political disagreements to enjoy a really entertaining man who has a passion for what he does.
Don Cherry is a mouthpiece for the Conservative party here in Canada. We've suffered through many Saturday nights where we he talks about soldiers rather than what is happening on the ice during the games. He is not a sportsman, his rise to fame in Canada is due due to the fact he was fortunate enough to have Bobby Orr on his team during the early 1970s. Please do not judge all Canadians by the actions of this loud mouth,. Have you ever seen him on skates?...8D...LOL.
How manufacturing are pushing prices like 200bills with the claim of better performance or what not while a 40dollar wooden stick would do. It's marketing
@ironpirites If you have ever played hockey you would know that a slough foot, or 'kicking the skate out from under him' as you so adequately put it, is one of the most dangerous plays in hockey and probably one of the cheapest and dirtiest. To be the great mediator all I have to say is that Bure was great, but cheap. Cherry is stubborn, but right... in this instance.
@tjcurrie Actually I've started to like Don, even though he talks a lot of crap. I'm swedish and a caps fan so when I'm sitting up al night watching the caps play, it's really funny to switch game in the intermission to hockey night in canada and listen to cherry:P
What the fuck are you talking about? I have played in a game and broke a stick. I got a one95 and i took a backhander and it cracked. The next pass I received broke the stick. And I've had many 5030's and ZERO of them have actually broken in a game. I've only grew out of them or they became too whippy.
@capsfan7 Don Cherry is 70 something and I think he's done his growing up.....I agree with you though....even though I am a canadian, Cherry has this bias with Canadian players........He takes cheap shots at russians for no legitimate reason.....Bure, Ovechkin and i can go on and on.........CHERRY IS A TOOL.....you don't take him seriously, you just laugh at him!!
Barely trained? What the fuck are you talking about? You're making the NHL in the 80's sound like a beer-league pickup game. It wasn't 100 years ago. Workouts existed, you know. Mark Messier in his prime was one of the most strong and cut players to ever play. He worked out like a fucking bodybuilder. Bure himself was built almost the same as Ovechkin. Wood sticks are actually better for shots and don't break nearly as much. Defense and goalies sucked back then, not the workouts.
don cherry always has these stupid opinions, ignore him, he should retire now, doesnt understand the modern game and spends half coaches corner talking about troops in afghan
Even though he left Vancouver, he was THE first Canuck superstar out there that entertained the crowd and they didn't call him the Russian Rocket for nothing. I still remember this just like yesterday. The whole city was so delighted
I love how he stands up and starts walking before his named is even announced for rookie of the year award. Thats confidence ladies and gentleman.
the audio was not synchronized to the video - it was obviously cut
I remember all of this and man was it fun to watch both on tv and at the rink.
Unreal he scored 59 goals in the trap and 2 line pass era
More than 59
He should be in the hall of fame, and have his # retired by the Canucks. He's the best and most talented player we have ever had.
THE LEGEND

It's been 14 years since u said that... I'm still waiting
Truly the greatest era ever. Not even west coast express the Sedin twins. This team was unreal. With Bure Bure Bure Bure Bure Bure Bure Bure Bure.
aww man i love Bure the early 90s rocked!
I miss you to Pavel, where ever you are
from Bure's fan to a black sun wielding neonazi 🤣🤣🤣
oh my God, that first song was hilarious but the second one really took the cake! Ahhhaahaha aaahahhahaha Bu-re Bu-re Bu-re wooh!!
those were such awesome days. he would bring the place to its feet regularly.
Oh my god a country tribute song to a Russian hockey player, its so 90's I cant take it! YES!
I remember his first goal against the Pens his rookie year, I think it's at 6:00
My left ear enjoyed this
switch your earbuds around ya jerk

payback on Shane Curla
How i miss going to see bure beat up my Jets in winnipeg!

Most hockey players from that area came from farming families, working on a farm makes u BEEFCAKE! :)
Hard to tell but to me it looks like an Eagle Talon Turbo.
I was going to play in the Q, and then broke my femur in a game. It took about a year to rehab and heal, and then I went to the Junior Pirates for a rehab season. I have a full scholarship to BU. Have you ever broken your femur, or anything else major like that? Probably not. Where have you played?
Either way, they should also show the clip when Don Cherry praised Bure for destroying Shane Churla in revenge for a series of cheap shots.
@surfer53 The ONLY positive thing about Bettman is he protects the game's stars... All about the money though, not because they're a joy to watch.
@capsfan7 Hes definitely entertaining. But he also knows the game the way its meant to be played.
@blackmoore24 because hes supposed to be talking about the games that night. i fhe mentiones the troops, then fair enouf, but he spends almost half of coaches corner talking about them. and bobby orr. get with the times donny.

@capsfan7 I could not agree more. Also what number did Bure use most of the time?
That song at 5:40 is brutal! lol
@mkcgoalie35
Sorry but you are missing the point. It is a free country, and Cherry should be commended for using a small portion of his time bringing attention to something that should be in the minds of every citizen of this country.
He's the Russian Rocket, he's fast!!!!!!
I love Bure hes my fav hockey player of all time and Cherry I also happen to enjoy but I think he is out of line he was just jealous of Bures talent level.
somewhat wrong there. He lit it up in Flordia my friend.

Don Cherry was always known for hating European hockey players
why did bure leave vancouver?
Who is mash?
What is?
who's the sports commentator at 2:15 ???
@capsfan7 Don Cherry is 70 something and I think he's done his growing up.....I agree with you though....even though I am a canadian, Cherry has this bias with Canadian players........He takes cheap shots at russians for no legitimate reason.....Bure, Ovechkin and i can go on and on.........CHERRY IS A TOOL.....you don't take him seriously, you just laugh at him!!

Russians suck?Did Larionov,Fedorov,Fetisov,Bure,Konstantinov,Kozlov etc. suck?Does Datsyuk,Semin,Malkin,Ovechkin suck?Your argument is invalid
Seriously, if you had two identical players would you choose a Russian over a Canadian?
don cherry always has these stupid opinions, ignore him, he should retire now, doesnt understand the modern game and spends half coaches corner talking about troops in afghan
dons better then you
Cry about it.
cherry is so biased its not even funny
Don Cherry is irrelevant !
I miss Pavel and the Jets :(
