This is a great song for Chaka's current voice. Doesnt require her to sing high and belt. She sounds superb here staying in a great range. ❤
Chaka is now and not Whitney her approach has not changed nor has her gift. She is a constant even at rest
I agree, with Chaka's age her voice has changed just like any other singer. Singing in her mind range is perfect, but in concert fans want to hear those high octane vocals that very few artists are capable of doing.
Belting is what she does and continues to do. She is able to continue to belt because she has never sang out of her range...which is Low D to High A. A tired voice (which she often exhibits from rigorous touring) does not mean the range has disappeared.
You need to do more together, your voices mesh so well!!
Your instincts are tuned in. Youre casting each bar out there, letting it hang just right, and then reeling it back deftly and without jerking it. That's just how it's supposed to be. That flow is just right.

I don't always agree with Rufus' choices but I respect that he is fearless in experimenting with genre and approach to songwriting and performing. That's in general -- not specific to this track.

This is like the Nina Simone version. Very different from the bluegrass version.
