A man that is living his passion, making a livelihood, AND teaching others and sharing knowledge. Not easy to find nowadays. 👍🏻 Great content as always.
Man this was like one of the first yt channels I started watching around o9. I still cant believe how much I pick up in about every vid, now goin into '25. Thx.
Great video. For the dyneema bags, I'd love to see them in different colors. Particularly orange, blue, OD green, tan. This really helps when communicating to kids/spouse - if I'm packing for them or if they are digging through my bag looking for something. For example, I keep my kitchen stuff in a blue nylon bag, I keep extra cordage in a green mosquito net. "Honey can you bring me the blue bag, out of my backpack." Or, "Son, your spoon is in your blue bag."
You just made my day with your ditty bag. I do the same with mine, the content looks like a general store and every time I take it out, my girlfriend laughs at me and finds me messy because my hygiene stuff is there with all my little backups (very similar to yours, except me it’s mineral oil for my knives). I’ll show her your video, maybe she’ll understand. I feel less alone, thank you sir, and a beautiful year and wish you to receive as much happiness as you can transmit to this community.
Happy New Year to you and yours Dave! I like the organization of your kit and the backup of the key 5 Cs components. You hit on a key point during the video that's worth repeating...the stuff you're going to need quick access to needs to be outside your pack or exterior pocket...very good tip to always remember! Good video Dave keep up the great work!
Thank you Mr. Canterbury, I really appreciate this video as I tend to overburden myself on the trail and have been looking to cut some pack weight but I have a hard time letting some things go, but between this ul setup and an in and out box I have the understanding that I need now, and my back thanks you!
Your snack bag looks like mine. I keep it in the top of my bag so I can get to it even when I’m driving. I love the GU packets. I always have pants with pockets for snacks and wipes when I hit the trail.
Ultralight backpacking; Sub-10lbs. Light backpacking is more what 90% of us do which is under 15lbs. Conventional backpacking is more like 15lbs to 45lbs and anything after that is expedition-grade backpacking. [all + food & water] I can spend a few days in the woods in sub-freezing conditions with a 2.2lb PSK that sits on my hip if I had to. If I'm carrying more than that, it's either my 26lb hunting loadout or my 12lbs day hike pack at a minimum. EVERY SINGLE loadout I go out with covers the 10C's with no compromises in providing what I need for myself (cover, food, water purification, tools, etc...). While I could (and have) spend nights sleeping on the forest floor, there's no excuse to be out in the woods without the 10C's if you're a competent woodsman. If you can't carry 2lbs of gear on your person without a pack, you have no business being out there and putting yourself in precarious positions. Honestly most people regardless of their skill-level should go out with at least a "light" loadout with a real shelter and real means of water purification and a real sleep system and real cookware and real tools and real firecrafting means; Period. That's at least 10+ to 15lbs of gear of affordable gear. That can easily be drawn down to sub-10lbs with the right money but I'd rather have the money in my bank account and I'll gladly carry that extra 5lbs of better quality, more durable gear on my back (especially since I was born with both an X and Y chromosome). But 15lbs (20 including 3 days of food & water) is, in the hands of a competent person, enough to be comfortable and more importantly, safe. All that and a personal locator beacon just in case. Nessmuk & Kephart's loadout weights today would both be cut in half easily utilizing modern materials and in their time, they both used the most modern materials they could get their hands on to save weight & bulk. Weights are all just numbers and shouldn't be targets and those numbers are determined by the carrier's skill level & knowledge. The more the know, the less they need, but the never go out compromising their safety & comfort.
I got into UL hiking after I got into bushcraft. The 5C's mentality is what helped me get my carry weight down. The rest is having big pockets - UL gear isn't cheap if you want good. My UL base weight is around 8 - 10kg depending on season.
I've been an UL hiker for some time. If it's pure hiking, I'll still go UL. Most of the time, though, I'm "minimalist camping", which looks like kinda similar to what you do / carry.
Great recommendations and video! I always carry a saw. Although I don't have funds for ultra lightweight, I bought myself a folding saw from Harbor Freight for like $6. Works great and has been reliable. When blades dull, I'll probably just buy another one.
I like to see your concept or thoughts on ultra light. I’ll be hiking the AT this march. There are several things you have that I recognize from the ultralight backpackers use. Thank you for your time and effort. Enjoy hangcon. I’m jealous.
Hey Dave. Not sure if it would be something you would be interested in doing but I'm looking how to bring my wife and 2 kids with me into the wilderness more. I could use some videos on how to make it comfortable and enjoyable for them. Your so clever with your approach to things I would like to see what you come up with.
Oh boy, when you dumped the ditty bag I think I actually heard the gram-weenies heads exploding! 🤣🤣🤣 I have similar stuff, it's like insurance I never plan on using but when you need it, you NEED it. Very interesting saw, I wonder if they plan on making models to fit the larger Silkys. Have fun, and remember don't hang your hammock higher than you're willing to fall 😂😂😂.
If traveling internationally, India for example, check the local law. A woman was just arrested for having the InReach on her traveling through the country.
@DavidCanterbury I found out to say that the Cirkul flavored water bottles fit your SS and titanium water bottles little tip to anyone that might want a flavored water on occasion. The lid for the bottles can be bought separate and then simple choose a flavor .
On shorter excursions I don't really worry about having a tub unless the time/opportunity presents. The 'wipes' ARE a treasure though, if you find things are more arduous than expected. (Don't have a tub for a week and you'll know exactly how precious those spare wipes can be.) I prefer alcho wipes as they make good for tinder if everything is too wet. Just don't completely unfurl them or they'll levitate and only last a few moments. I take a half bar of laundry soap on extended stays. Laundry soap lasts longer and doesn't have ultraviolet enhancers or a perfume smell. If you haven't done the things mentioned in Daves video here then you're probably somewhere in the middle of your learning curve for bush survival etc. (Does it ever end?) And there will always be tid bits you possums can pick up or reminders for things we may have forgotten. The best thing is, you're on the right channel. (Don't forget to go back through the other videos.) Cheers Dave. 💜👍 Universal Sovereign Citizen
this video inspired me to try and empty the gear out of my medium size get home bag into the large re-purposed (EDC) tackle box that I have in my car.. (it all fits and still room for some of the EDC) the backpack is now rolled up and waiting to be re-filled if I ever have to walk away from the car..
Thank you for making me feel ultralight😂. I always have everything to fix buddies real ultralight gear. They pay me in food I don’t have to carry so I think I’m doing it right.
Have fun on your trip. I'm going to save up for the 6 oz Suluk saw. I've been wanting to find a saw that was small and lightweight. I backpack ultralight so I can bring more fishing gear and carry out more of other people's trash!
There are also several advantages to the Inreach for emergency communication. Telling your audience about the 10 free emails that are available would be nice to comment on.
Watching all the kit load out videos on UA-cam I realize I must be one of the most ultra- ultralight bedroll campers in the world. I literally removed the handle from my small folding saw even to lessen weight. The majority of the weight I carry now is in the water in my canteen that I take with to start out..
Great ideas but I would say there is one thing that is overkill in the lower 48 states. Water born viruses really aren't a thing so a Grayl seems overkill and it is a lot of weight, and bulk, for the amount of water it can handle at a time, and the filter itself doesn't have a lot of longevity. A Sawyer Squeeze, or Platypus Quickdraw, a long with a 2 liter water bladder, will be lighter, let you filter more water at a time, take up less space, and will have a lot more longevity. Also just my comment on emulating Nessmuk as an ultra lighter. Most people don't realize what Nessmuk, or Kephart etc, meant when they spoke about their shelter materials. When they mentioned "cotton canvas" or "balloon silk" etc they weren't talking the heavy duty duck canvas that you often see Bushcraft tarps made of. They were talking about high thread count cotton cloth, not that much different than a high quality bed sheet. It would gain weight of course, depending on the method of waterproofing you used, but you were still likely only looking at a 1 person shelter weighing 2-3 lbs, vs the 6 lbs that many a modern oil skin tarp will weigh.
One thing worth mentioning about the inreach vs spot or zoleo, aside from the inreach messenger (which is also tied to your phone in order to send a message)the inreach mini has the capability to send a receive messages with out the phone connection (yes I know it's a pain in the ass, doing it one letter at a time..but it can be done, kind of like on the old flip phones when texting first came out lol, so even if you lose or break the phone, you can still send general chat style messages..
Hey Dave and team thanks for the video, would you mind postpone the sizes of all the different dynema bags you use or a link to easily locate / replicate your container set up as shown in the video? Such as the map / nav and battery bagThanks as always for the knowledge, I’m looking to join y’all again when my boys are a bit older. Just had our 2nd son!
Could u make a curved taller canteen similar a metal version of the forest service canteen Also a curved flask as compared to your current rounded flask Would be great !!

Happy new years brother. Wish everyone a safe and joyous new years. 😊
Your snack bag looks like mine. I keep it in the top of my bag so I can get to it even when I’m driving. I love the GU packets. I always have pants with pockets for snacks and wipes when I hit the trail.
Nothing quite like spending a little time sharing with a good friend. Thank you brother.
Great info on a lightweight kit . I'm an over packer like many. I like this approach.
Dave loving these videos of late really good gear advice, thanks.

Happy New Year!
I could not understand the brand name of the titanium shovel and bucksaw that you said. Listened several times. Thanks for the video.
Good video!
I wasn't able to understand when you was talking about the silky saw, what was the name of it again please sir?

Mr Dave Canterbury you said 2 weeks so you might start to hit it right when it starts warming back up but we're going to have a polar vortex or something so on the 5th that's going to start getting real cold and then I think after that it's going to get really really cold so you actually might want to dress pretty warm bring some extra stuff I hope you see this message
I'm gonna have to get one a in reach
Thanks to encounters with little furry 'critters' I now pack all my food stuffs in a solid plastic container (also doubles as a spare bowl for whatever).
Dynema Dave😊
Solve my problem.I always confuse what to carry bcoz all items feel essential nd at end bag weight increase😢.guide me how much each item in quantity I carry?
Dave I’ve always wondered because there is never any on your videos about this. Do you follow or have any concerns about our country as far as politics or just all of the crap going on with our government? Like the drones that were being spotted and or our constant involvement in other countries like giving Ukraine basically a blank check and our border crisis? 1st 🤣🤣 Happy New Year all
I'm old but still hike. I never carried phones, batteries, solar panels, radios, inreach, tourniquet etc. I save 5-8 lbs that way.
Lucky man or you don’t go far from people, one or the other
Only comment I’d have is you’re too organized. I’m not the best, working on trying to get better, but bags of bags of bags adds up.
I’m financially constrained but my current goal in reducing weight is to have less bags (my current bags are too small and I need to buy bigger ones)
For example: I’ve got a bag for my tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and clothing.
That’s four fucking bags. Clothing, pad, bag, and tent inner can all go in one dry bag, the rain fly and footprint for the tent don’t need a bag, they can just get stuffed in my pack.
I struggle with the trade off between organizing and weight, but I’m slowly but surely getting less organized with bags of bags to reduce weight. Mind you, extremely budget stuff, don’t own a single thread of dyneema. Mostly ziplocks and a few nicer compression sacks / dry bags for me.
Man, all that gear looks very heavy. When I backpack my pack weight for a 3 day trip in the Sierras is 28 lbs.
This is easily sub 30
“Ultra Light”… let me show you what’s in my “junk drawer” that lives in my bag. 🤣🙏🏻
Probably well under 1.5 lbs I actually weighed it once I’d have to verify
As much as I appreciate Dave's philosophy and walkthrough of his kit, I think, if truly trying to cut pack weight, the thruhiking community has a philosophy and kit much more focused toward ultra light that has developed through a community's thirty generations of multi-month experiments. That's not to say everyone would be best served by a five pound kit, but there is a lot of middle ground between a truly ultralight kit and what Dave has laid out.
I consider anything under 25# pretty light if you are actually off trail
DAVE DRESS ((!!!WARM)))!!!
Cowabunga.!
So... no axe =]
Not necessary in a non heavy winter environment when large fires or shelter buildings aren’t needed
For you, I'll give an okay for lightweight. Ultralight? Needs some work, Dave.
"Hope you brought enough for the whole class."
