If slugs know love, I doubt it's for being salted, but I'm sure you're very quirky and after a close reading of her poetry you realized your particular zaniness is expressed by Newsom and now everybody in the comments knows to associate your inane npc dialogue with her wordsmithing
First time hearing this song: "Oh wow this is fun and quirky hahah :D" Thirty-six replays in, after looking up lyrics: *lays head on desk and cries over feelings.*
jesus christ, having said something similar to someone I was dating in the hopes that they'd be able to make me open my heart... and not actually being able to reciprocate like I was hoping I would be able to, and hurting them... yeah, this line is rough.
Just dumped out of nowhere after 2.5 years. This song hits more than ever. I think it’s gonna define this time in my life for a long long while. Hope she starts doing live shows again soon. Joanna, thanks for giving us the gift of your music
Probably some of the best lyrics of any English language indie song. period. Really gets at your guts and everytime I give it a good listen I discover a new feeling or memory.
This is one of the great Americana albums. As an English person it feels so richly infused with American culture, like the feeling of the frontier, white picket fences, the America we only know from movies, somehow is captured for me in this album. Love her x
Has the same feeling to me as an American. (Expect maybe I don't need intermediating art to identify it through.) Newsome is a treasure. Check out Gillian Welch if you like even more folk in your Americana.
@@missmylarose It’s a play on words, referring to the Scottish folk song “Auld Lang Syne” and the phrase “signed, sealed, delivered”. Auld Lang Syne is traditionally sung at the start of the new year to say goodbye to the old and welcoming in what is to come in the next year. “Signed, sealed, delivered” refers to some kind of binding contract that has been handled properly, where everything is in order. In the context of the song, the line seems to be saying that her love for this new partner of hers is full and without any doubt (signed, sealed…) and marks the start of a new chapter of her life (Auld Lang Syne). But the real reason I love the line is that it’s such a good pun!
" when ive been trying with my whole heart and soul to stay right here in the right lane but it can make you feel over and old lord you know its a shame when i want you to pull over and hold me till i cant remember my own name"
the soundtrack to the first time i ever drove cross country, moving from ny to california, with my siblings the 2 most important people in the world to me. "and i have never in my life before been here..."
"Auld Lang Syne" is the famous NYE poem/song. It starts with "Should old acquaintance be forgot and never brought to mind?" It's often a call to not let old relationships be forgotten, but of course you can answer "yes" AND "no" to that first question. "Signed sealed delivered" evokes a sense of certainty, even irreversibility. This tension between fond rememberance and 'it was going to happen anyway' seems - to me at least - to be a theme of the album.
I don't think the word should in Auld Lang Syne asks a question but rather it''s the alternate meaning where it's used to indicate what is possible or probable to occur in the future.
I've listened to this about thirty times in the past three weeks. I first heard it about two years ago but it didn't speak to me or relate to me. Now it does, and I can't turn it off.
On first listen I thought this was really weird and didn’t enjoy it all that much. For some reason though I wanted to listen again... so I did. Now after listening to it multiple times I love it! So strange. It was similar to trying black coffee for the first time (which I now love). I’m no pretentious music listener but what an experience. Usually I love a song right away and that’s it.
The lack of love/comments on this song... so disturbing. This song doesn't have the same sweeping beauty as the other songs in this album, but it has SO MUCH CHARACTER. This is probably my favorite song on the album. It deserves a hell of a lot more love than this!
I don’t feel like anyone besides God really gets me, so to have a song that gets me and to know that someone else is experiencing something similar is monumentally comforting
Just heard this on the radio the other night and I dunno why, but it makes me a little sad. Lovely song though, easily worth crying a little on the inside to listen to
There's also a Stevie Wonder song, "Signed Sealed Delivered", that might also be a piece of the puzzle. There are several references to actual songs throughout GIPC, so she might be alluding to his song too. Even if she isn't directly referencing Wonder's song, it seems oddly fitting for a song like GIPC.
I heard this song when I was in love with someone, hopelessly. I ended things before covid on a whim and we ended up back together a year later so I came back to hear this again… Just felt it all even stronger. Joanna can write a goddamn authentic love song.
I was just watching the Aoife O'Donovan, Chris Eldridge & Julian Lage acoustic cover of this and thinking about how this is one of the best songs of the decade.
it's not hopeful but i don't think it's nearly as pessimistic as what you described.... i think it's more of the "feeling of dying in the arms of your beloved" kind of sadness
"Get this joy off of my chest" and "In love with the hook upon which everything hangs" are two of my favorite lines in all of my music.
the line "i'm in love with the hook upon which everyone hangs" makes me feel like a slug being salted i love it so much
"makes me feel like a slug being salted" is just as evocative a line as anything from this song. Wow.
this is so real

"watching me sit here, bolt upright, and cry at no good reason at the Eastering sky." The power of a moment like this and to share it with someone.
That line never fails to give me goosebumps 🎶
You can pick any line from any song from any album of JN and it s profound, deep beautiful amazing etc etc . An artistic genius. Life changing
"I regret how I said to you, 'Honey, just open your heart' when I have trouble even opening a honey jar" drives me absolutely insane
