Holy shit, this BAND. I love Joanna herself, but the depth, flavours and colours that each of the individuals in the ensemble here adds is just amazing. Truly unique.
There’s absolutely nothing else in the world like this song.
I have a feeling Have One on Me and Divers will be considered classics 30 years from now just like The Dreaming and Hounds of Love are now
EXFUCKINGZACTLY
Divers is kind of uninspired if compared to Ys or Have one on Me. But both of those albums could be the best of each decade. Have One On me specially, this album is perfect
@@not_emerald what do you mean by uninspired? I don't agree, especially when it comes to the construction and deliver of lyrics. I think she was very inspired and it was inspiring for me (even though I am not a lyricist) watching the explanation she gave to Seth Meyers about her creative process for this last album of hers.
@@myJDside most of the instruments in Divers, except for her harp and piano, felt forced into the music. Yeah, her lyrics were good (even though I believe they peaked in Have one on Me), and the cyclical concept of the album was very interesting, but seemed to me as if she took herself too seriously as a composer, when at the end of the day, she's just a singer-songwriter (one of the best, actually, but still not more than that).
Saying Divers was her worst album isn't saying it's bad, by the way. I still enjoy it.
Luc L'Heureux Thank you for mentioning The Dreaming. Such powerful, soulful songs. ❤️
This is one of the greatest songs ever written. I am in awe.
I drive my car home from town at 2 miles per hour just so I can listen to the entirety of this song on the way
🤣
I like how Joanna pays attention to him in the trombone moment. It's like she's proud of him
5:18 "Lord, you know it's a shame, when I only want you to pull over and hold me 'till I can't remember my own name."
*swoons*
Joanna's band always understands the assignment
omg such a great comment. So very true.
This is better than the studio version. Her clever lyrics come to life with the live performance.
I need food, water, shelter, and THIS
+Mike9201984 Best comment ever.
Picturing you listening to this nude, but well fed and hydrated in your house.
@@waterwallets clothing is just light, portable sheltering.
Making the violinists play beer bottles, this alone could speak a lot about the unstandard creativity of whoever misterminded this. Overall, what a thoughtful employment of instruments and musicians to frame this gem of a genius piece of music!
I was there, and we were all blessed to hear this song played twice. Apparently, they were unsatisfied with the first recording. I thoroughly enjoyed it both times.
The violins. That harmony is other-wordly.
“ I regret how I said to ya honey just open your heart, even when I have trouble just opening a honey jar “
DAMN.. i have been a fan for like 10 years.. but dude comin back and seeing that this shit is still fucking amazing.. joanna newsom is a legend
We still here my guy
Every time I see her do this song she sings a different part in the harmony, and every time it sounds like it's been the melody all along. God damn it
The most beautiful " Darlin' " I've ever heard in my life 2:30
She is a national treasure.
a global treasure.
Every time I listen to the recorded version it makes me want to hear the outro on this version.
This is truly one of my favorite live performances EVER. I always come back to it.
This is just magical. Too good.
Totally agree. Pure, melodic magic.
The self restraint of the drummer not breaking out into a heavy drum solo on such a groovy tune
On the strength of hearing 2 songs , I bought her back catalogue...... Remarkable talent, very addictive.
One of the best things America has produced.........
I am indeed back again for my biweekly viewing of this. ❤
Where the hell does she find these musicians who can also sing lmao this stage has more talent than I'll ever dream of
Joanna is brilliant and a true musical genius. She's one of my favorite artists. Her complexity is mind-boggling. She seems as sweet as the most delectable chocolate.
Wow. “Have one on me” is such an incredible piece of music.
Forget who said it, but always think about it when I listen to this. Described this song as (paraphrasing) the hottest track you’ll hear on am radio
how does she get thru her songs without crying
One of the most perfect songs and performances I've ever heard
Joanna does everything well, and she shows off by giving us another piece of art, supported by talented musicians, it excites us and fills us with color, and with her voice, her charm and her lyrics full of poetry she conquers our hearts once again
I have the same appreciation for this song. So many amazing lines. Just when I thought there wasn't a new way to arrange the 12 notes - life has a way of spacing these remarkable songs across the years to keep us coming back, and finding another performance to listen to 10 times in a row on a random Saturday morning.
@@cooporlando I speak English, not perfect, because I am not a native speaker, but unless I can have a conversation very well, and listening to Joanna since almost 20 years ago, gave me so much more vocabulary and expressions, that even are unknown for people that have English as first language, she is a true artists, in all the ways possible
@@samsepiol4761I'm always going to the dictionary when I'm checking her lyrics. But English is also not my first language, I don't know if native speakers feel the same way.
She needs to be given the freedom of the Earth. As simple as that.
she is a music genius. just recently found out her songs and it is so awesome!
This is my favorite Joanna tune. I turned my daughter and grandkids onto Joanna. I guess my tastes are more eclectic.
This performance blows me away everytime I watch it!
I love her so much it hurts :(
I have chills throughout this entire performance. HOLY SHIT
She is the most amazing woman
that will ever exist.
This is Gospel music to me. I feel other-worldy when I listen to this performance...
her face is as hypnotic as her music and voice, when singing
what a beautiful soul she exposes when she sings, just kills me
this is the best song! goddamn!
Joanna is one of my favorite artists and is so amazingly talented. I wish that one day everyone will be able to see the joy and beauty of her music ❤️
Absolute treasure. She blows me away.
It's still so funny to me that her and Andy Samberg are a couple. I love them both.
I suspect they both serve as a tether for each other to a part of themselves that we don’t get to see.
hits me smack dab in the soul hole. wish i could thank her heart to heart for sharing her poetry... she has made my life better. you been a bright voice in my head, jo. thanks.
This is like going to a good jazz concert. very satisfying.
How could anyone not love her and her band in this? Oh my god~!! I love every move she makes!! Her band is glory in this and she? Oh man ... what a talent~~!!!
She's a national treasure.
One of my favorite live videos on ol girl. Her backing band is killer.
the most beautiful thing.. my heart sings
Oh my God I love this song.
Best trombone solo ever.
When I need it, I click into this video. And I calm down.
I must’ve commented on this video a dozen times over the years. It is the single greatest live performance I’ve ever seen and I wasn’t even there.
I’ve watched this video a minimum of 500 times. All other music pales in comparison to JNew. We are lucky to be alive at the same time during this blip in history.

My personal favourite Joanna song, and a superb performance.
I will never stop being amazed at how wonderful this performance is.
this so is so, sooo good. the lyrics are poetically so rich and fit so well with the melody the trombone solo in the end is so beautiful. OMG just perfect
Me encantan los gestos de esta chica!! She's so beautiful!!!
OMG .. pave me any day!! Chills & beauty .. amazing song. Amazing feeling
Twenty miles left to the show.
Hello, my old country. Hello.
Stars are just beginning to appear,
and I have never, in my life, before been here.
And it's my heart, not me, who cannot drive,
at which conclusion you arrived,
watching me sit here, bolt upright,
and cry for no good reason at the Eastering sky.
And the tilt of this strange nation,
and the will to remain for the duration
(waving the flag, feeling it drag).
Like a bump on a bump on a log, baby;
like I'm in a fistfight with the fog, baby;
step, ball-change, and a-pirouette!
And I regret how I said to you,
"Honey, just open your heart,"
when I've got trouble even opening a honey jar.
And that, right there, is where we are.
I've been 'fessing, double-fast,
addressing questions nobody asked.
I'll get this joy off of my chest, at last,
and I will love you till the noise has long since passed.
I did not mean to shout, Just drive,
Just get us out, dead or alive.
The road's too long to mention - Lord, it's something to see! -laid down by the Good Intentions Paving Company,
all the way to the thing we've been playing at, darling.
I can see that you're wearing your staying-hat, darling.
For the time being, all is well.
Won't you love me a spell?
This is blindness, beyond all conceiving,
while behind us, the road is leaving, and leaving,
and falling back
like a rope gone slack.
Well, I saw straightaway that the lay was steep,
but I fell for you, honey, easy as falling asleep.
And that, right there, is the course I keep.
And no amount of talking is going to soften the fall,
but, like after the rain, step out of the overhang. That's all.
It had a nice ring to it, when the old opry house rang,
so, with a solemn auld lang syne, sealed, delivered, I sang.
And there is hesitation, and it always remains
(concerning you, me, and the rest of the gang),
but, in our quiet hour, I feel I see everything,
and am in love with the hook upon which everyone hangs.
And I know you meant to show
the extent to which you gave a goddang -
you ranged real hot and real cold, but I'm sold,
I am at home on that range.
And I do hate to fold, right here, at the top of my game,
when I've been trying with my whole heart and soul
to stay right here, in the right lane.
But it can make you feel over, and old
(Lord, you know it's a shame),
when I only want for you to pull over, and hold me,
till I can't remember my own name.
I love your name!
Thank you!
This is so dauntingly beautiful.
That trombone solo at the end was very satisfying/pleasing to my ears!
Such a unique artist...wow, just wow
so pure, so magic, thank you!
she really is just amazing...
so soulful.
I can't stop watching this .
Man... I've been playing the beer bottle since I was 8 years old... I wanna be in a band...
She really embodies the sweet tenderness of Americana.
I have not come to terms with the fact that I will never see Joanna Newsom live
what do you mean? where do you live?
I suppose she will never come to Poland.. my only hope is Berlin or London 😛
Incredible voice like an angel. Can hardly wait to see Joanna in Toronto... Beautiful.
+Jamie Carlisle So, how was the show?!
Going next Monday in Brooklyn. It's her first time back in NYC in 5 years. Can't wait! :D
+ExecutionOfAllThings I'm going to see her on Dec 14th in Toronto. I'm assuming your going on Dec 7th so you'll see her before me. I'm sure it will be a great show. Perhaps you can let me know how the concert went in New York. Thanks. :-)
Ahhh! I thought you had gone already so indeed I shall. Hope we both have a great time!
Cheers!
+ExecutionOfAllThings Can hardly wait... Thanks. :-)
So... just got home and WOW!
Have a great time; Joanna was amazing.
OH! And she played for just short of 2 hours.
I can post the setlist here if you'd like. Let me know. I don't want to spoil it for you. I personally don't like knowing what's going to be played beforehand. :D
Newsom is life.
That trombone solo was so tasty. Right on point!
Pure genius!
She has such a wonderful connection with her music. She doesn't play because she has too, she plays because it is as much a part of her as breathing. This is why so many can attach themselves to her work emotionally.
I have never appreciated trombone till this moment! I love it:)
She's so super cute it's silly
I loooove her, can't wait to see what she does next, she's easily the most gifted female artist of our generation.
I love all the positive comments for this!
So crazy how people can so easily dismiss a female artist even one who's genius is so apparent. Joanna Newsoms work is an embarrassment of riches and still she gets no credit. I don't get it
People don’t dismiss her. The album was massively anticipated and highly rated
This is so great!!! So much talent, such a special and unique sound. Love the combo of them all playing together.
Oh, that look at 5:31
Gets me EVERY TIME!!!
hashtag joanna, or something.
Hermosa canción! perdí la cuenta cuantas veces la escuche
Ajajajajaja
When I only want for you to pull over and hold me until I can’t remember my own name.
Michael Cera killin it on the bone!
Just brilliant!
This song is so exactly what it should be, so right on, the book of right on was right on!!! I’m in love:)
3:27 to 5:35 is so real.
This is an amazing live performance, I love it! :)
I always used to think this was a (very bittersweet) song about leaving someone and having regrets, but now I’m starting to think it’s about sticking around.
Given how much it seems to affect people (me included), I wondered what anyone else’s take on the lyrics are? (since we can all agree that the music and performance are sublime!)
I’ve always been looking for a meaning behind it, and if either of your ideas are correct, I need it right now. I don’t know if I should stay or go.
@@congruentcrib listen to the podcast "a hopeless endeavor" - they go through each song line by line and discuss themes, metaphors, etc. - it's fantastic.
How does she not cry at every performance?
i just saw her in nyc, cried the Whole. Time.
@@SaraHUgSTrEes This seems like a purely laudatory comment yet accidentally may hit too close to home. I absolutely love her, but this is kind of her "Wings" album, if we credit the entirely credible concept she was as talented as Paul McCartney, or indeed, Emily Dickinson, or something.
Does she write these songs with welled up eyes?
duh
Gotta be one of my favourites of hers
love it when you think a song is done....but no, there's more @05:36
her face expression between 5.30 and 5.35 is so cute that i forgot to listen to the words she sang. i had to play it again and - guess what - i was stuck exact at the same moment... damn you, pretty girl ^^
BRILLIANT.
I don't understand how anyone could give this video a "thumbs down"...
I have seen this video many times and I have *just* now noticed the ppl playing glass bottles
que coisa linda pqp
incredible performance! big up the trombone player!
