The reason it works here is that while each track kinda has its own melody, there’s one track that has a much less sparse melody which makes it sound like everything else is just supporting track for the least sparse melody.

Composer here. I got to say it's clear that it's not merely tracks being overlaid (because drums would clearly overlap) but rather as if the original project pieces were all put together. I wonder how the video was made.. Unless the song files were already split up for ease of use in the game logic. That would be unexpected, however, as game files are usually obfuscated (encoded) so that assets are not accessible outside of the product. That aside, was an enjoyable listen. Thank you for sharing.
This OST was created by a random dude on Fiverr, and now it was rendered by an orchestra at the game awards. There must be so many artists out there that are just as talented whose work will never see the light of day because they never have their lucky break.

I totally agree!! If you wanna peep some sick synth compositions that are complex in a really good way I recommend Windows 96! They have only gotten better as an artist with time, but 100 Mornings and Enchanted Instrumentals and Whispers are insanely good albums.
At first I thought this would sound attrocious. Because every video that did the same thing of overlaying multiple tracks usually did it with songs that had nothing to do with eachother. But then I listened, and remembered that the music is quite literally designed to fade in and out of each piece you don't even notice. Putting it all together is like the pieces making a bigger, so much greater picture.
I remember there were a ton of combined OSTs for Luftrausers that also had a layered soundtrack, but since the original music was already high energy, it ended up just sounding messy. I'm still surprised at how well this worked for Balatro.
I get still being surprised that *all* of them at once isn't massively overpowering though. It speaks to 1) how coherent they are with each other, not switching out elements for the sake of it, and 2) how economically "less is more" the composition and mixing is. In my opinion, that's what preserves the "flow" in normal gameplay and lets it be a subtlety in the background instead of being a front-and-centre distraction that people disable at hour 10 of gameplay

Correct me if im wrong but i heard LocalThunk talk about in the podcast how this was actually delivered as one song with all of the tracks and LocalThunk thought it would add more variety if he broke up the tracks logically into different visuals and fade between them to make it all coherent. That way theres variety but the transitions are seamless because its all actually 1 song.

This reminds me a lot of the way Chris Christodoulou would layer motifs on each other in his music. especially in the deadbolt soundtrack. unironically sounds so good
this is the mark of an excellent composer. there is so much good flow and shared motifs through each of the individual tracks that they can be layered and still sound good. an example of a similar thing would be toby fox. as we all know, toby fox is extremely good at translating his characters into unique leitmotifs. so much so that characters that share a motif have songs that can flow into each other smoothly. also it is very worth mentioning at this time that localthunk found louisf on FIVERR. until this game louis was just a random guy. i sincerely hope that this changed the course of their life, because this music is so perfectly ambient that i sometimes don't even realize it's playing in the background. it just feels right and was so perfect for this game.
