I wonder how the video was made.. Unless the song files were already split up for ease of use in the game logic. That would be unexpected, however, as game files are usually obfuscated (encoded) so that assets are not accessible outside of the product. That aside, was an enjoyable listen. Thank you for sharing.

At first I thought this would sound attrocious. Because every video that did the same thing of overlaying multiple tracks usually did it with songs that had nothing to do with eachother. But then I listened, and remembered that the music is quite literally designed to fade in and out of each piece you don't even notice. Putting it all together is like the pieces making a bigger, so much greater picture.
I remember there were a ton of combined OSTs for Luftrausers that also had a layered soundtrack, but since the original music was already high energy, it ended up just sounding messy. I'm still surprised at how well this worked for Balatro.
In an interview localthunk actually said that this is the way the music was sent to him. He asked for the stems and ripped out the different layers himself to make different versions of the track to do the fade thing.
Inon Zur's works work quite well when you slap together variations of themes from Dragon Age Origins (lake Calenhad docks battle ost is the best), or Fallout NV "Dam Nation" NCR and Legion parts for example, it really feels like the variations were made as one song initially and then split.
I get still being surprised that *all* of them at once isn't massively overpowering though. It speaks to 1) how coherent they are with each other, not switching out elements for the sake of it, and 2) how economically "less is more" the composition and mixing is. In my opinion, that's what preserves the "flow" in normal gameplay and lets it be a subtlety in the background instead of being a front-and-centre distraction that people disable at hour 10 of gameplay

I totally agree!! If you wanna peep some sick synth compositions that are complex in a really good way I recommend Windows 96! They have only gotten better as an artist with time, but 100 Mornings and Enchanted Instrumentals and Whispers are insanely good albums.
Took me a second to figure out when measures begin and end but you’re right. This is an incredible piece. There really are too many talents that go unnoticed. This guy I know has a song in 5/4 up on UA-cam, and they said they’re working on a 13/8 song. The 5/4 song is rough but it has potential.

Most of the song is also in 7, but there's no backbeat to anchor you, so the 7 doesn't feel "wrong"

Correct me if im wrong but i heard LocalThunk talk about in the podcast how this was actually delivered as one song with all of the tracks and LocalThunk thought it would add more variety if he broke up the tracks logically into different visuals and fade between them to make it all coherent. That way theres variety but the transitions are seamless because its all actually 1 song.

LocalThunk literally made Balatro to pad his resume since he quit his job as he really enjoyed just making games, and didn't expect it to go anywhere, but once the game blew up he made a contract so all revenue from purchases of the OST is 100% given to Louis.
We all know it's the same song that fades in and out, but there's such a "full" feeling in this version. Like the instrumentation from the variants lend their voices to missing harmonies and lines in the main theme. It rounds out so well. The little arpeggio runs near the end with both arcane and celestial playing call and answer. It's a wet dream.
This is so cool. It sounds so mystical and enigmatic with the tarot/celestial pack themes blended in, and they all kinda take turns filling the silent spots of the others
Funny how all the tracks playing simultaneously completes the "empty" parts of each separate track, with this version, there is no time to breath. Mesmerising

It is absolutely worth the ten dollar cost of entry. I'm not a big fan of poker but Balatro goes so much deeper than that, it just oozes style and atmosphere, and when you get a good run going, it just floods you with dopamine watching the stars align as you rack up billion point hands. Would definitely recommend
Technically all these are playing at the same time while you play. Each layer fades in/out depending on which screen you're in. Doom 2016 doesn't a similar thing where different layers come in and out depending on your weapon.

People think god would hear everything at once as if it were random noise, but it would probably sound more like this since they would be able to comprehend every individual sound in a harmony similar to how we can recognize each part of this song.
