I remember all the strikes. I was a steel hauler most of my career as an owner operator and there were some pretty scary moments that happened. I could write a book about my experiences over my fifty plus years in the trucking industry. Thanks for refreshing my memory.

Man my hat is tipped to ya Driver, I know you had to have nerves of steel to truck back then. And 50 years? Wow!

Paul here🇺🇸 I come from a trucking family & had heard stories from my dad & oldest brother…WOW! In 83, it got really intense in places. We got police escorted into Georgia just to deliver a load of carpet. The police told us to keep our marker lights off so no one would recognize us in a big truck until it was too late. People had been throwing bricks & blocks over bridges at trucks. It was quite scary at times. Those were some good days of trucking, but they had some bad moments as well. Blessings my friend! 🥰😎✌️

Anyone that labor's is worthy of their hire, dignified treatment, and respect. Honest labor of any kind is honorable. It can be convenient for people to forget this, but it's never convenient for people to go without it.

Im late to this episode! Definitely a great call on the brown striping. The “trucker wars” was definitely interesting and something I think history classes should have taught more of. Trucking is such a need here in the US for how we transport our goods. Truckers make this country go round! Thanks for sharing this with us!

I remember the strike and the fuel shortage. I grew up in suburban NJ just outside of NYC. The gas stations were mobbed until they were outta gas. Every day there were long lines, fights. One of my friends was stranded in Florida with a friend who was a OTR driver and shut down at a truck stop once they got the official word. Glad most drivers stuck together and even if some had to work? Most avoided the violence. Union, non union, we're all just drivers. Brown is the way to pop "" subtly "" with the Grasshopper! Exhaust is coming along. That Key Bridge is a really terrible tragedy. Drove over it countless times. Working outta the Lancaster PA area Baltimore was a hour away and we were through there continuously. Hope it was a good Easter weekend. Safe travels and God bless as always!

Wow! It musta been very unsettling during that time. I watched to as those last few trucks crossed the bridge seconds from death too…. So tragic.

O-H-I-O Porter greetings 🇺🇸It’s after the Jamboree & I’m getting to watch this video. COOL! Grasshopper sure looks so good. I didn’t notice the black/brown striping & I was right next to it in the garage. Hmm! I can remember my dad & brother talking about the strikes, since I was a little kid then. Blocks, bricks, etc being thrown from the overpasses, guns coming out, police escorts. Some people took it to the extreme. We were told to turn off our marker lights when running at night so they wouldn’t know we were big trucks. We got escorted by police in the strike of 83 as we were going into Georgia. That was weird!! Sure makes me wonder if we need another good strike in the future. Well, we won’t go there right now. Thanks for sharing! 🥰🤩✌️

Hey Dane really enjoy watching the restoration. You’re sort of doing an every man restoration instead of pulling the truck apart the last nut and bolt and putting it back together you’re doing it like 95% of the population would do it due to economic constraints sanding, down a section of painting it with a rattle can Working on an exhaust system instead of having it custom-made totally I can really identify with you because if I was going to find an old truck and fix it up like that, I would be doing it the way you’re doing it unless I won the lottery lol I remember the truckers strike in the 70s and 80s I wasn’t driving yet with the first one and 74 but I remember the ones in 79 and 83. I was driving dump truck in Illinois at the time and I remember seeing trucks spray-painted shut down going home leave me alone painted on the sides of the the trailers.

I wouldn’t have it any other way. You can throw money at any truck from a catalog and so what. I wanna see how a guy is frugal and creative and see their personality in their “bucket” now THATS old school lol. Man that’s cool you got to experience the real days of trucking. 😬👍

Wow thanks so much, did that bring back memories or what!! I live up in Duluth,MN, most western point of Lake Superior, back in those days the vast majority of grain from Western Minnesota and North Dakota came through the Port of Duluth and Superior WI by truck. I remember some of my buddies that were leased to International Transport and Warren Transport, two of the biggest equipment haulers in that time, Caterpillar, John Deere, etc. went on strike, and wouldn’t haul any regulated freight, everybody up here tried to get a grain trailer and haul some “exempt” grain from out west, grain lines up here in Duluth back in those days were maybe 5-miles long, used to take the guys a week to get dumped at the grain elevators.

Brown pinstripe is different. Yes, brown is far more complimentary to green and gold than black.
Ohhhh, using Dr. Mark Felton's intro music for a history segment. Nice!
I remember the shutdown. My great uncle and his son-in-law were drivers for the old Mason Dixon Line.
Ford 2-story Falcon spotted at the 21:00 mark.
I sure do remember the even-odd last digit of your license plate being the determining factor on which day of the week you could buy gasoline.

The Truckers strike was a scary time. I hauled US Mail at night at that time and we worried going under overpasses. There were reports of people lowering cinder blocks at a height where cars would go under them but would go thru the windshield of a cab over.

I used to hear the stories from our Youngstown clan of Roy Tancre, Carlos Hicks, Ray Little, Gary ______ , Martin Palich, plus a few others that their names escape me at the moment . Parkhurst tried to band the truckers together to make a statement, but strikes, like politics, pits neighbors against neighbors.

Dane, I wish the truckers would stick together today and go on strike for his higher wages. The pay is horribly low. Back in the late 1970s early 1980s, our goal was to get a dollar a mile. Now, nearly 50 years later, we struggle to get $2 a mile and our operating expenses are probably 50 times how higher than they were back then. Its disgusting.
