A timeless masterpiece crafted by musicians not computers. The drummer earned his pay on this one. The best I have ever heard. Enjoy it even more as a video.
This studio recording was done in one take when the band did what they thought was a sound check. The engineer had the tape rolling, and when it was done all agreed it was good to go. So, what you have here is basically a live performance. Makes it all the more timeless.
Thank you for sharing that little tidbit of information, makes it even better knowing the band went all out even though they thought it was just a sound check. RIP Ron
I had a friend in high school who never played anything other than In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida every time we pull up the side of him in his car he had the same 8-track in do you hear me 8-track LOL one of the baddest songs ever made I love this song
Butterfly drummer Ron Bushy passed away in August of 2021, he was 79. I'm from that period, it was an amazing time. There is no posturing in this performance, like most all metal bands in the 80's, this is the real deal - no women's make up or playing to the camera. As far as I'm concerned, Ron was one of the top 5 drummers of all time due to the drum solo in this song. Towards the end of the drum solo when the organ filters in I still get chills. It's more than just the drumming, it's the composition and timing. You have to remember that when this came out it was the absolute high-water mark for psychedelic rock in the late '60s with 1969 filled with so much amazing rock talent never to be seen again in one year. The 17 minute song was amazing for the sound put out by each member of the band, but especially the drum solo by Ron. Ron set the gold standard for all drum solos that followed. RIP man.
And no one has measured up since. This isn't just a bunch of random beats of a drum, this is music. It will also go down in history as the most interrupted song ever. Get about 60 seconds into the drum solo and the phone rings, a kid comes in the room, wife wants you to move a refrigerator, etc...
Listen to these guys - Best drum solo ever - bar none - Excellent Lead Guitar and use of Fuzz Pedal - A voice to rival Deep Purples and The Doors lead singer - Bass line of the Gods - Has never been duplicated - Rock Music at it's finest .. the end
Oh man, the memories of this song! Caught them live playing this ( man, don't ask me where, okay, I don't remember ), well, during the drum solo I looked over at the love of my life to see if she digging it, and man, she was gone, I mean GONE. Never saw or heard from her again. Someone told me she split with one of the roadies, just my luck right? I still dig that drum solo Peace
I saw these guys live in concert in MPLS in late '68-early 69. When Ron went into his solo, the rest of them walked behind the curtain and most likely burned one LOL. The building was a concrete hockey stadium with not much ventilation and the whole place was a haze. My buddy and I climbed up to the highest nose bleed seats and just breathed deeply... oh yeah, to be 17 and living during the evolution of rock and muscle cars is something most people younger will never feel and if I have to explain it, they wouldn't understand.
That drum solo is a masterclass in how to do a solo: it’s not just some fancy drumming in the middle of a song - it carries the song along the whole time, by turns subtle, understated, driving, and powerful (and several other appropriate adjectives). The whole song is a timeless slice of a wildly fertile time in music history.
(70 here) Back in the day, I would listen to FM music late night full album sides. DJ put this on. Many reading this can understand how it blew my mind.

Tenía once años cuando era muy popular está rola. Todos la queríamos bailar en las fiestas, ver el vídeo completo y escuchar en la radio comercial.
I acquired this LP from my sister when it came out. I was 11 and she was 17 (the same age as the guitar player Erik Brann). Yes, those were the days when only children were truly free. That all ended by the late 80s...
I used to play this in my office back when, then if I had someone I had to deal with I would play the opening, scare the crap right out of them!! Boy I loved this !!
Totalmente groovie!!! En la época, batería, teclados, bajo, requinto , Cantante... Voz y letra... VÍDEO TODO!!! Es momento de Revivirla, la Mejor en su Tiempo. Excelente aportación Gracias x compartirlo
Stoned out of his mind in the early morning hours, he thought he was saying " In the garden of Eden",and the next day the band just left it as it was recorded!! True story.( most people know this).
That’s a great thing about songwriting when you record a quick demo or idea. The next day it is something way cooler than you remembered. Then, they rode it all the way. 17:05 of awesomeness. Thanks for sharing.

Another words: It ain't that great as all the horseplay makes it sound. It starts off okay and then just sort of drags and drags and drags like weak meth reading scriptures. You know. A little boring. May I recommend Jethro Tulls Thick as a brick if your into this type of classical rock music. Some what from the same era but much more present and in line with the Gods of sound , better performed musically and probably more kosher too. Just a thought. wait till you hit your 60's kids, may God have mercy on your soul.

I had forgotten the “one take” aspect and didn’t know it was a “sound check”. Very cool.

where guys knew how to play their instruments and create music!
Amen, brother
He compares to Bonham, only better.
This was the national anthem of psychedelic rock. Those were years of great confrontation, protest and our struggle produced this heavy classic.
I was 10 years old when i first heard this album first time i ever got goose bumps on music its mybest song ofall
Vor 44 Jahren zum ersten Mal gehört und immer noch absolut begeistert, Top!!!

Pure genius. Wasn't the guitarist 17 or something?
Actually there was a pair of 17 yeat olds that auditioned for the job , Erik Braun beat out Michael Monarch , who ended with Steppenwolf .
@@bobbrinkerhoff3592 ah yes Erik Braun, I knew his name was something like that. Whatever happened to him?
