    Thanks Ben! This video was perfect because this information is missing from the Ruvati installation instructions. Also, thanks for using a tripod with your video. Nothing worse than watching shaky "how to" videos.

    When I installed a new acrylic sink I used plumber's putty. Fast forward a couple of years and there was water running out from under the sink from the side we used to soak dishes. The side often full of warm, soapy water. Which, from what I could determine on "autopsy", had removed the oil from the putty over time causing it to crack and leak. Cleaned everything off and redid it with 100% silicone and it never leaked again (for the six or so years until the house was sold, at least).

    I'd used both, 100% silicone RTV and plumber's putty. Silicone lasts way longer. The putty dries and cracks faster.

    What is it with siliconing everything to death. I would think taking the foam ring off altogether and just using putty would be fine. I haven’t done 100s of sinks but if all the ones I have done, I have had zero issues... some people are just silicone happy... heck I should think the supplied gaskets, if used correctly, would probably do the job. It is how the sink was designed...

    That looks like the Attop sink & strainer that I just bought. No instructions were included so I wasn't sure where the gaskets go and whether I needed plumbers putty or not.

  • @ggc7318
    @ggc7318 5 років тому +10

    O No...no silicone addhesive at the strainer tread please. You will need to use some saws to cut through the strainer or destroy the whole sink in future if you need to replace anything.

      It is also the wrong sequence for the gaskets. He needed to put the silicone on the lip, install the basket, then the rubber ring underneath, then the white gasket, then the nut.

  • @stevelist3496

    Ben, a question Ruvati instructions show white foam gasket hoed underneath sink. Tried doing it twice with plumbers putty
    It leaks after a while. Which way is correct? Thanks

    • @shannonrunyon-sturgill2367
      @shannonrunyon-sturgill2367 2 роки тому +2

      Not his way! White foam goes underneath ,under the rubber gasket it prevents rubber gasket from getting destroyed during tightening
      He is so wrong n you don't seal the nut bc if u have a future leak, u have to cut off nut!

    Great video. I’m trying to replace my drains on my kitchen sink and looked up a video related to this drain. Could you do a video on the piping that goes under the sink? I’m not experienced in this kind of work at all but being a broke college student I’ve been looking to do work on my home myself. This looks like something everyone can manage without help.

    Thank you. At 2:30 I don't understand why the manufacturers don't simply supply a second rubber gasket to seal the upper surface of the sink same as the lower surface. Is there a reason for this?

    • @tjf1114
      @tjf1114 Рік тому +1

      Because you're supposed to use plumber's putty to seal the upper surface. Most strainers come with simple instructions. If you follow them, you'll be fine.

      @@benmcdonnell4167 A rubber gasket on top can create a bit of a lip which will collect gunk. Plus, the rubber can tend to give off a black residue as it breaks down over time. At least this has been my experience. Good luck.

    Just a heads up, that black rubber gasket is supposed to go in and be the sealer for the top side of the sink and the thicker gasket is for the underside between the sink and the nut

  • @tonloc789

    No No this is a bad presentation "Silicon" for real? use plumber putty around the top side! and the foam, discard the foam it will make the drain higher & the water will puddle up around it! then use the gasket & nut on the bottom tighten the bottom nut! your done, there

      @@BenjaminSahlstrom My GE disposal basically said to put the rubber gasket above it's really thin though and there's a fiber one for below. They recommend no plumbers putty for stainless steel. I'm doing silicone for extra precaution. Don't understand all the negativity about silicone or methods other than plumbers putty. The plumbers putty on my sink flange was growing mold and smelled awful and was just a general mess.
