Yes, it was designed that way. You can actually run both computer and phone on the same wire (not if you have gigabite ethernet) Orginally RJ45 was created to carry two phone lines (four wires) and ethernet (four wires). When gigabite came out it uses all eight lines. Yes millions of extra lines were ran and never used in the 90's.
I have DSL internet(RJ45) and my ADSL router`s input is RJ11 port.what can i do.I don`t want change my router bcoz its WIFI enabled and best router.Pls help me
Ok I have a landline. My router I bought netgear nighthawk does not have a phone jack to plug in. It has ethernet. I'm wondering if there is a device that converts my ethernet on my modem to a landline ? So I can plug in my landline to my modem threw my ethernet somehow?
thanks forthe video, i have the same problem, I have one question. The "MB rounded" cable which is connected to the router , is it connected to the telephone port of the router?
Do I get it right, in your MB where is the telephone line, you connected that MB phone line(rj11 port) with another line in LR (rj45) - with rj11 cable coz it fit in both connectors (rj11 can be plugged into rj45) and the MB with LR is connected to switch and it works? Because I have an ONT box which my ISP told me where should I have my phone connected, it is TEL1 port which is RJ11 ( all other ports are rj45, just the phone ofc is @ 11). But now I have my phone near the RACK where is my switch and its under the stairs so the phone is in a really bad position and I wanna change that, but I dont wanan get another cable in house I wanan use my cat 5 cables with RJ45 so what is the trick u mentioned there?:P what should I do can I just take one end of the cable which is RJ45 and change it to RJ11 and that RJ11 just plug into ONT TEL1 port and the other end can stay asj RJ45?? how to crimp these connectors ? I use T568B , thank you very much for an answer :P
honestly I'm not sure what you're asking. You have an existing cable you want to use? I didn't modify the cables, I used the existing network wiring in my house. What are you planning to do with the rj11-rj45 cable you want to make?
Ok I will try to make it simple this time :) phone = rj11 modem = rj11 cables in my house cat5 = RJ45 I need to use one cable (cat5 rj45) to plug it into modem. How to crimp that cable or what is necessary to do :) thank you a lot :)
so you want to modify your rj45 cable and make it into an rj11? You can, but not sure why you'd do that. You can fit rj11 to rj45 port You can't fit rj45 into rj11 port If you're trying to convert an rj45 to an rj11, you'll need to buy the smaller rj11 head seperately. Not sure if you can just cut a part off. Might as well get a cheap new rj11-rj11 cable.
Quick question. I was provided with a router with both RJ45 and RJ11 (VOIP), but its a crappy one. I exchanged it into an Asus but this new one has only RJ45 ports. Question is, can i somehow connect the VOIP phone, which is rj11 to the new router (rj45) and skip the old router? Now i have the old one connected just to have VOIP and the new for internet.
I doubt the asus router has in built voice capability, otherwise there would be a dedicated phone connector (rj11). A local company of mine does something similar - they provide a digital phone service but the router is like shiet. So what I did, was set the router with voice as a bridge and connect to the asus router. This way, I get to keep the digital voice line, while using the better asus router for all internet traffic. Check with your telco.
You cannot convert ethernet to telephone because it is going from 8 wires to 4 or 2 wires. You can only go the other way around as shown in this video. This is a standard way of wiring a building for voice and data without using multiple sets of equipment.
I was wondering if i could get one of theses to connect this really old laptop i have to the internet though it's modem. it dosn't have an ethernet port or any usb ports
Hi Aaron, I do not have a MB port in the switch area as I have only 1 LAN port in the Living Room. In my case, can this work if I place a switch as a bridge from the modem (with LAN and Telephone line) to the LAN port?
theaaronloy Wondering if i do this. My internet modem uses telephone jack and i need to convert it to my room so if i do this and connect it like this Phone-Modem (Phone is house number) Can i also do it like Phone-Pc directly?
hi , i dont know how i end up here. Btw, my router right now has no phone line, if i get the ethernet-telephone adpater to connect my telephone, will this work?
No. You need a telephone (2-4 wire) signal put into the ethernet (8-wire) network) in order to get the telephone signal out. You need to get a modem and service that includes telephone or you can't get telephone.
It sounds like you have a DSL router/modem combined. The RJ11 port on your device is for the modem and needs to be connected as directly as possible to the phone company's box (NID) attached to your residence. Connecting it via RJ11 -> RJ45 port on one side and then at the other end going back from RJ45 -> RJ11 to connect at the NID may work if you have a good signal. But if it at all possible you should avoid running it through multiple adapters and ports like that. Ideally you'd want a single cable going from your modem's RJ11 port to the NID's RJ11 port.
What is this model of electrical outlet? By the image, I observe that there is a switch of this plug or am I mistaken? Do you have more information about these electrical outlets that appear in your video?
not everyone is as smart as you. it's a smart ass comment, yes, but it has truth in it. if you've done jobs in customer service or have taught before, you'd understand.
This would be so much better if there was a narrator. I know EVERYONE doesn't like the sound of their voice, but SOME WORDS ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON WOULD BE A GOOD THING!
idk what the point of this video was whether to show us that someone showed you how to do that or waste time but Jesus man just show how you did it not ramble on about it.
4 years later and your video proved useful to me. thanks! will try it out on my new bto.

I had a similar issue. I had RJ45 socket but no telephone socket. I never knew that RJ11 could fit into RJ45. This video solved my problem
You saved me couple of hundred dollars. Your trick worked. Thanks a lot

So in order for all this to work, I will need the initial modem's RJ11 port to RJ45 port connected right?
Do I get it right, in your MB where is the telephone line, you connected that MB phone line(rj11 port) with another line in LR (rj45) - with rj11 cable coz it fit in both connectors (rj11 can be plugged into rj45) and the MB with LR is connected to switch and it works?

This helped so much - Sending back comcast triple play rented modem , hopefully this is option due to new setup.
the modem I use now have only LAN out and my router has only the telephone ports ,will this work ?
Get a lan splitter or an access point
you can get those for 5-6$
You cannot convert ethernet to telephone because it is going from 8 wires to 4 or 2 wires. You can only go the other way around as shown in this video. This is a standard way of wiring a building for voice and data without using multiple sets of equipment.
Thanks for this! I was looking for a coupler (ethernet to phone), which isn't necessary at all as you've just shown.
hi aaronloy, to summary, is it always true that we can use RJ11 cables and connect into RJ45 jacks.
I was wondering if i could get one of theses to connect this really old laptop i have to the internet though it's modem. it dosn't have an ethernet port or any usb ports

+Sean Hong I'm sorry.. I don't understand what you're saying.
What's your setup and what are you trying to do? MB port = motherboard port?
I have rj11 connection and my router input is rj45. What should I do now
What is the model of your wifi router Zhone?
theaaronloy Wondering if i do this.
My internet modem uses telephone jack and i need to convert it to my room so if i do this and connect it like this
Phone-Modem (Phone is house number) Can i also do it like Phone-Pc directly?
you're using a dial-up modem?
Yup

hi aaron, can u please tell me if i can connect a spare telephone cord cable to my router n cpu alongside the ethernet cable connected to the router?
+Allen Jacob you can't use it as ethernet if that's what you're asking
+theaaronloy No am not asking if i can use dat for the ethernet port, i asked if i can use it for the lan port.
lan port = ethernet no?
hey buddy.....my internet cable is rj45...but I got a router having rj11 port....
if I convert RJ45 to RJ11....will it work fine on router..?
+amit deshwal what's the rj11 port for
Thts RJ11 port as dsl port...in WiFi router...
amit deshwal
so, it's meant to be used as a digital phone line? What are you trying to do
It is DSL, you need phone line for the internet. Yea you could rpbably do that.

Does the phone cable have the Ethernet wires? I'm trying to convert from phone to Ethernet and wonder if phone cables have the wires for converting.
technically no, I think, but I believe there's a workaround.

What is this model of electrical outlet? By the image, I observe that there is a switch of this plug or am I mistaken?
Do you have more information about these electrical outlets that appear in your video?
What is the brand of your wall plates and where can I order them?
i have no idea, came with the house when i rented it
In Singapore you call it "Open Net." In Australia, the government calls it "enemy of Rupert Murdoch's empire." :-X
Eu queria saber se um modem adsl pode faser o papel de inversão do sinal
Thats what she said still slaps today
have a beer and a shot before you try to comprehend this !
You should switch out those flat ethernet cables because they can cause you problems. Flat ethernet cables are not twisted pair.
I wish there were instructions on how to do this, though...
Why did it take over almost 7 minutes to explain this?
not everyone is as smart as you.
it's a smart ass comment, yes, but it has truth in it. if you've done jobs in customer service or have taught before, you'd understand.
RellyOhBoy The video isn't even 7 minutes, and I actually think it's better to explain these things in detail so that more people can understand them.
Great and useful information, thank you.
Well shown. Now I know to convert all my tel lines to RJ45 so I still use my phone.
Thats what she said lol
You watched the video XDDD
I cracked up when he said that...
Eu... 5:10 we can easilly find your phone number with a basic audio editor program... Just saying.
This would be so much better if there was a narrator. I know EVERYONE doesn't like the sound of their voice, but SOME WORDS ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON WOULD BE A GOOD THING!
This just confused the crap out of me.
Olá Amigos não sei se vcs vão me entender mas vou tentar ser claro
you should get a shorter fiber cable. bends like that are sub-par
Где купил?
i want a cord
Ty will try this
Super helpful
tnx you
The 178° thump down its me
idk what the point of this video was whether to show us that someone showed you how to do that or waste time but Jesus man just show how you did it not ramble on about it.
+jaime martinez apparently lots of people like it, so ramble on I shall
Very confusing
You get a like for the "That's what she said"
Lo
Thats what she said ha ha ha hilarious!
rabak
saw european outlet, closed video haha.
Dani Sylvester shouldn't matter because the ethernet/phone outlets are the same?
Dani Sylvester You wouldnt want to accidentally stick an RJ11 plug into your power socket now would ya?
Change tittle
to?
what you want to show in this video with tittle "'Converting' Ethernet to Telephone Jack (RJ45 to RJ11)"....
Taufiq Mansuri
which is technically what I'm doing. I'm 'converting' the use of existing RJ45 connections into RJ11 telephone sockets.
dude you talk too much!
oops
