Another great video Graham. Was just a lad but remembered them so well. My granny lived at 10 Crichton Place Pilrig. We were there at Shrubhill that Friday night in November 1956. Great memories. Thanks for finding this.
I have just discovered this. What a treasure! Thank you so much for posting it. All the 'Online Video' series are both an education and a delight. Martin Jenkins is a magnificent speaker and a joy to listen to.
Thanks for this; having been born in Edinburgh( 1947) and lived there until 1955, to see some of the pictures of Princes Street and have been there at that time is fascinating. Thank you.
Fantastic film, Graham! Thank you so much for sharing it with us!Both the quality of the images&sound is surprisingly crisp and clear. I see that you have a collection of excellent films on different subjects; just the things that I appreciate. So now you've a new fan and subscriber. I look v.much forward to watching your collection until now at my own pace ( I'm handicapped so I have a much slower pace than most) & I'm also getting really old(60!). Take care and my best wishes! ...anwar...

My Beloved late grandad Hugh McMahon was born around this area in 1912 and I have lost touch with the family as I was born in Birmingham .. I'm very proud of Edinburgh as its part of my roots , just wish he was still here to show him the video ... Great Stuff thanks
A most enjoyable video, thanks..... one small point though, I'm not sure the residents of Craiglockart would like to hear the area referred to as "Maggot land"!..... Should be Meggatland.... now well built up on the old sports fields.
@@kingofdubb2133 You need to remember that different accents down south do in no doubt sound different. Such as a Glaswegian speaking to a southern Londoner or even North Londoner. Is definitely Meggetland
Hi Graham, great video, I'm in my 80's, and travelled regularly on the trams. I'm not not picking, but during your narration which may I say is excellent, I noticed a small mistake which might be of interest to you. You mentioned the " red biddie" this was not meths, it was cheap wine. And the meth drinking was called the Jake. The people used to call them " wino's and jakeo's. Keep up the good work. Excellent video and very interesting. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍
Absolutely fascinating video. It's amazing to see so many familiar locations. A real historic resource. It's a pity the new tram system has been such a disaster.
Great footage, and commentary. Thanks for the upload. I recognised one of the clips taken is from the 1948 movie "The Waverly Steps", but the video quality in the Waverly Steps is much higher that the clip on this film. I wonder whether the original version of this documentary is higher than the quality of this youtube version. I've noticed that there is a DVD available on the internet, but it is a DVD-R, so, do you know, is it the same quality as this version? Thanks
Last tram down the Mound would have been on the last day as route 23 was the last timetabled route and The Mound was part of its route.. The last day was 14th November 1956
I have really enjoyed this documentary and would like to thank you for uploading it onto UA-cam. It is highly useful for my present dissertation which I am currently completing at The University of Edinburgh, I was however wondering if anyone could tell me more details about the documentary itself. What year was it publicised? On what channel? Who was the director?...Any help will be much appreciated thank you.
I clearly remember my father taking me on the trams the council should look at this film it might be the only time they see trams in the town in there lifetime
At the 1 Hr, 29 min. mark, reference to the double-header steam loco briefly seen, is incorrect. A "Double-Header" is when you have one loco leading the train, and another at the end of the train, bringing up the rear, as it were. What we saw there was a tandem arrangement with both locos at the front of the train.
Normally if the is a loco at the rear it is called a banker and is there to assist getting a heavy train up a steep incline by pushing from the rear. It is not coupled to the train and slows down once it's at the top of the incline leaving the train to carry on. A double header as Alan states is when both locos are pulling the the train
Hi, May I ask if it's possible to get copyright to use about 30 sec of the tram scene? I'm a student from the Uni Of Edinburgh, filming a documentary and my contributor's father works on the last tram in Edinburgh. That's why I want to use it. Please let me know if you read this, many thanks!!
Hello Graham, Could I ask where the actual original of the film can be found? There is a shot of a Gresley P2 leaving Edinburgh Waverley. The P2 Trust who are building a new P2 would be interested to locate the original. Many thanks, Kind regards, John
I have got the first 10 minutes transferred to DVD. Been in touch with Andrew. If full copy of film required. Not a problem, Sleeve of VHS Film is being emailed.
In all fairness, and possibly from a copyright point of view, you should be aware that this is taken from the "Online Video" collection of transport videos.

As with all films of that era, No-one can make them as interesting as this anymore.

Haha no from now on I will refer to us as Maggot land
It’s not “Maggot” is Meggetland the narrator clearly stated this in the video

Really enjoying nostalgia.
I wish i could transfer myself right there, It would be like goodnight sweetheart without the war set in Edinburgh,
If you can look at the time-line along the bottom of the film. It may give me an idea of which monument you mean.
Thanks Graham :)

The old trams they always reminded me of Daleks. I always thought that. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I think you are mistaken. Double header means 2 locomotives at the head (front) of the train. If the other locomotive is at the rear, it is a pusher.

tram are smother and better so getting ride was the biggest mistake this country made
not in edinburgh 1 billion wasted putting it back in
And axing the railways!!!
Who was the narrator. I like him he's excellent. I love listening to him very informative and acould listen to him all day
This is the "Online video" series. Excellent and highly professional videos. The narrator is Martin Jenkins, and as you say, a splendid narrator.

Found a film on you tube. British Steam of Yesterday. Looks great, perhaps it could help you and P2
Hey Graham - could I use a short clip from this with a credit to you for a piece on STV news? Thanks
