BMW N54 335i Upgrade 5" Intercooler Install - FMIC DIY: MHD Stage 1+ Build

- Опубліковано 14 жов 2024
- Dylan keeps wanting to make his relatively stock 3 series BMW faster, so today we added a cheap front mount intercooler upgrade which will allow us to run the stage 1+ flash from MHD.
Very impressed with the results from such a simple / direct replacement modification so we do highly recommend it. If you want to grab one with our affiliate link check them out here ebay.to/325ZY0l
We didn't get a chance to flash the car in today's video so we will have to get it back for a 2nd video and in that we can do a true speed comparison for the stage 1 Vs stage 1+.

These last two intercooler videos put a lot of my questions to rest. So many thanks. The quality of all of these videos continues to impress. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the support, if you ever have any questions that are not addressed in a video remember you can always shoot a comment through.
I wanted to thank you guys for the tiny little mention you did about the small plastic square in the corner of the right side where the cooler goes in. If you hadn't mentioned that I would have continued to believed the guys that keep saying in their videos that it just "Goes right in no problems and that's it". So when I started having trouble getting mine to go in I remembered what you said and realized that little plastic piece comes out and is the problem. Big thank you!!
Edit: After I wrote this I realized I live in Canada and that may be why I had the results I did. Our summers only have a few weeks at most where I live of +30 temps. Sooo.... End Edit. Okay a few years ago I had my 2008 335i N54 tuned by a tuner. All they did was check that I had a factory oil cooler and then put in a high flow K &N air filter asked what Octane I was going to use (94). Put in new plugs and they tuned it to 389 HP and 412 ft-lbs torque. This was their Stage 2 tuning package. I ran it that way for three years with only changing my coils and plugs once. I drove it like I stole it then sold it with the tune still installed. No bigger FMIC or Down pipes. Mind you if I had wanted to get their Stage three they said I needed down pipes. But no talk of a FMIC. So I don't think you really need the FMIC for the Stage 1+ Tune from MHD. IMHO.
Definitely need to upgrade my intercooler. I live in the Arizona and this summer heat is soaking up a lot of performance. I replaced the turbos with upgraded OEM ones last summer and did all the extra routine preventive maintenance. I'm almost pushing 190,000 miles so I only push it to stage 1 in MHD and that's plenty for me. I'm aiming for a reliable platform with that little extra oomph when I need it.
Im about to install the same intercooler on mine this week with VRSF charge pipe, cant wait :)
Late response but how did it go? Did the intercooler hold up?
If you’re running sport/performance cooling mode using the mhd flasher it will target 90degc for coolant temp when ambient is 27 or above. Below this it will target stock cooling temps which are 104. This has a big effect on oil temps which might explain the variation.
Thats a good point.
Great vids, info and data! Content Quality! Keep up the fantastic work guys!
Good testing guys, thumbs up for more! I've got the same IC and even with MHD Stage 2+ no problems at all!
Did you got for a no brand name one?
@@ZeroTo60Tube It was my first mod back then so it was a simple 5" IC from a UK parts company, it looks the same as most 5" IC, they all come from china...
@@JerainJezza 1 year later, is the intercooler holding up? Is it the MTC one by any chance
@@return2med241 Yes it was an MTC, held up fine on stock turbos. There was some dirt inside from factory so make sure befor installing you blow it out with some compressed air. I now have a 5door M135i with almost the same one doing perfect (fmic.eu).
@@JerainJezza thanks for the reply mate. I’ve got an MTC 5” stepped but I was hesitant to use it since I found out it was a Chinese one. I was under the impression it was not exactly the same as the eBay ICs
Good video. Would have loved it more if you did the whole Gale Banks tec info though and calculated the percentage of density increase. I'll look that up and work it out for myself now I guess. None the less I have watched a few of your videos now and in general good content info so I have subbed.
Thanks, these were very early days of the channel. But glad you enjoy them.
@@ZeroTo60Tube I have just got a 335i and I will basically be doing what you are doing in your new series using a twin turbo set up. Best of luck with the channel, What the police did to you was WRONG!!
i like the other vrsf that uses the silicone couplers it doesn't choke down the airflow like the stock style quick connect adapters. When upgrading the outlets and charge pipe as well as turbo's etc it's just a way better setup and power gain.
Here in Texas no air is cool ; ) Did 3 runs and I got a transmission overheat warning. FBO, bov kit , mhd stage 2+ (93)
Running a trans cooler? The black car on the channel had the same issue when it was on a e30 fuel blend after back to back pulls.
@@ZeroTo60Tube No. I didn't know I needed one. I'll google them. Thanks for the reply!
The intercooler looks good, I like your video, I have a e93 335i too, just plan to upgrade my intercooler, I into your link to ebay, is the size correct for stock hoses connect? Cause the pictures show the size like 81mm in, 70mm out, just worry about can’t fit for stock, have you give any problem for boost leak?
Lol how hot is it outside that you need 16degree air with that much fan? 😂 I'm in Brisbane and rarely go below 24 with three bars aircon haha
hello there, the app you have used to see the intake temperature it's from the MHD app?
thanks
What size is the O ring you doubled checked at 3:55 ? I've just done a boost leak test on my vehicle and found one side is missing the o ring!
Massive difference
Bigger difference than we were expecting that’s for sure. It took a fair bit longer to get the oil to temp as well.
can you install this without removing anything? or do you have to cut or inbolt something to make it fit
Hey guys, thanks for the great content as always! I was hoping you could answer my question. I am looking into upgrading my intercooler, and therefore have gone back to re-watch this video. Do you think that I am better off getting a similar size cooler with a bead on the end pipes so I can upgrade the stock piping later, or you think that this cooler would allow for aftermarket piping to fit later without modification? I am thinking that silicon pipe might be a better future alternative to the stock plastic S pipe. (I wont be running more than stock turbos.) Or would you just stick with the stock piping? (I know its a direct fit on this particular intercooler) thanks again. Regards Chris.
Its a bit of a tough one. I think if the possibility of further upgrades are on the cars. Just bite the bullet and go with a 7.5 inch cooler.
Wow what a difference.
Can it be installed without a separate cutting or modification?
Beautiful video. Do you recommend upgrading those T25 fittings?
On the 5 inch one you can get away with the stock fittings. But they did pull out on my 7.5
@@ZeroTo60Tube Right on, Im running the oem bolts with my 5" right now. May upgrade them however just for peace of mind.
Love the Video. I'm getting an E93 Bmw soon I had my heart set on a 325m Sport. But seeing your build and this makes me wanna get a E93 335 Msport the problem is im a fairly new driver would the 335 be too much for me??🤔
Any car is dangerous if the driver isn't safe. A stock 335i with the traction control on, is much safer than a 325m with the traction control off. I'd say if budget allows get a 335i and just be sensible. As you get more confident, you can start exploring the power, then later on you can start modding and have some real fun.
@@ZeroTo60Tube cheers mate thanks for the advice really appreciate you coming back to me. In England there is not there is not much difference with E93 they are all expensive lol, a good example would be £5.5k to £7.5k 2007 to 2009. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 the Road tax is a lot of more for the 335i so pits people off. Insurance is normally a lot more but lucky for me I work for insurance company so all the same price.
My dream car is an bmw V10 M6 I wanna try get used to some Power as that car is stock 508bhp. Plus these 335i are more tuneable/versatile and look amazing
@@alexwalsh31 I've had an E60 M5 for just over 10 years now ua-cam.com/video/ebJe_d30_iI/v-deo.html&t and we bought a e63 M6 last year ua-cam.com/video/ESZRSKDwHNc/v-deo.html . The M6 is a brilliant drivers car. However we don't use them much as they are a becoming a bit special. The 335i eats them both for breakfast, however the V10s feel a lot more special and you can not beat the sound. We daily drove the e60 for about 7 of the 10 years and with a cheap rear muffler delete the S85 sounds like a proper race car. If you are just getting in to driving and a bit of a petrol head, go the 335i over the 325i all day long. For a couple of grand you can make the 335i very very fast, but with a simple flash tune it will be quicker than a v10...... however, start putting money aside for the V10 car, its not all about speed and the feeling you get when you drive one is hard to match.
@@ZeroTo60Tube amazing advice. 😏Helped so much one more questions is the e93 much slower than the e92 due to the extra weight? Can't to see that video after work.😁
@@alexwalsh31 You wont notice the difference between a 92 and a 93. The weight difference is like having an extra person on board.
Nice video. Does it have an upgraded chargepipe? Is it needed for Stage 1+ ?
It does have the charge pipe, yes. Its highly recommended for stage 1+ but not "needed". This car has a super cheap ebay one on it. Fitment is not great, but it does the job.
@@ZeroTo60Tube thanks for your reply. Great channel. Ok cool. I have stage 1+, stock chargepipe & intercooler. Need to install intercooler, can smell burning after some pulls. Chargepipe install looks like a pain, so will keep the stock one going for now.
Burning after pulls...... hmmm does it smell like oil? Rocker cover gaskets are super common on these. Cheap part as well but they take a little while to fit.
@@ZeroTo60Tube yea it does. Will check that out thanks. First I'll install the FMIC and see if that sorts it out.
Faizal charge pipe is actually very simple to install
Do you need a ecu tune to compensate for different flow characteristics of the cooler to make it run “properly” ?
No not at all. The ECU uses a waste gate duty cycle figure to request "x" amount of boost at a certain point. As the air is now more dense it will simply require less duty cycle for the same amount of boost. The seems to be continually re-learning on the N54 anyway. It almost like driving your car on a cold vs a really hot day. The ecu is definitely configured for this.
@Zero To 60 Hi, could you confirm please that this intercooler from china is doing the job as expected? Especially this model "majesty"? There are many models in ebay etc... so it is difficult to know which is the best, thanks
Did you reuse the standard bolts that came with the old intercooler?
What app did you use to check it on your phone ?????
Good intercooler that works well, but the boost seems a little lower than before by 1-1.5 psi due to different flow of the new unit.
We didn't notice that while driving, but it could well be the case. The there is now more air to compress before you see boost in the intake. This may also adapt as every thing settles in. It definitely doesn't feel laggy thats for sure.
BC the air is more dense now, the load target from ECU is hit more easily, boost is not the only factor on target power with N54.
May need a new boost solenoid. They wear out and you especially notice after an intercooler install. They just can't maintain enough vac on the wastgate actuator through the whole pull. Its a cheap fix
@@moberly515 sounds like a random guess to me…
On the right side the O ring they give you is too big, I had to change mine and it seated perfect
Question, I installed this intercooler on my e92 N55 and it wouldn’t fit unless I removed the o rings on the chargepipes, as you can guess now I have 2 boost leaks, are the stock orings suppose to slide in this intercooler? Thanks
They will yes and you need them. However its normal for them to be super tight. Under high boost applications like 20+psi you can imagine how much stress is on those o-rings. Did you try using some sort of lubricant when slighting the hoses in?
@@ZeroTo60Tube yes Thankyou, applied some oil and it fit well, boosting normal again
So that you think the ebay intercooler or vrsf?
Hello my friend . I installed a 5 "intercooler on my 335. Will I have pressure drops or will I need to adjust it again?
shouldnt need to adjust anything 👍
What Intercooler (brand) are you upgrading to? 🙏🏽
This 5 inch one is just the generic Ebay one linked in the description. Or do you mean the 7inch on mine?
The eBay link goes to a $400-something intercooler, but pretty sure this is a $190 (as of 3/25/23) G-Plus intercooler.
That will likely be an aussie listing, although i did that link years ago, seller would have likely updated the listing
Yo, 0-60 guys. Going race style with my 1M and it’s tight in there. Dynamic Autowerx high flow plus going in. Have a csf fmic now but considering the Vrsf 7.5 race one. What’s your opinion on this being the right one? Thanks
7.5inch if you have room. The Autowerx Plus make some decent power, so the better cooling you have the better.
@@ZeroTo60Tube great. Actually eyeing the comp Wagner evo 3…
Why did you lose your boost after upgrading your intercooler? Is intercooler and boost related?
Firstly its very hard for most people to pick up on. However, a larger intercooler, means the turbos have to compress a larger volume of air before they make boost. Think of it as blowing up 2 different sized balloons it will take the same person longer to fill the larger balloon. The larger intercooler means the turbos take longer to compress the air inside it.
@@ZeroTo60Tube thanks for your answer!!
so , do you think intercooler size up is worth it??
@@laseraku In our hot climate, cars running more than 20psi i really do recommend it and the bigger the better.
I am planning to proceed with mhd stage 1+ soon. Does the 5-inch intercooler not need to cut the air inlet? I want to know the disadvantages of the 7-inch intercooler. Also, how is the durability of the 7-inch intercooler made in China?
What tools were used to do the install...? Any specialty tools...?
Hi Cody, nothing specialty. A normal portable socket set is good to go. Just need torx bits like any thing you do on a BMW.
Is it bad that I have that same intercooler and my ones been on stage 2 + for around a year? My temps almost double
From about 23C to 54c
Its not bad in the sense it will break something. But high intake temps will reduce power and have a flow on effect with excess heat in the motor. On the same note that 50deg c range is pretty common for a lot of cars. But if you have the budget for a 7.5" cooler i think they are worth every cent
you used the stock Couplers
No trimming needed?
Do you have a link or the name of the bumper?
That is just a standard Msport front bumper.
Is there much difference with the 5 inch vs the 7 inch vrsf?
Significant, VRSF Race is our go to now.
Can I use this same 5 " intercooler for stage 2 on MHD?
Absolutely. I've seen guys running custom tunes at 24psi with these coolers. However i think if you are planning to exceed 20psi, it might be worth looking in to the 7.5" mac daddy cooler. ua-cam.com/video/KsXnSd_aGdA/v-deo.html&t
@@ZeroTo60Tube cool, thanks!
@@ZeroTo60Tube One more thing, is this FMIC ok to run the car as a daily driver when I have switched MHD stage to stock performance?
Definitely. They would make a stock tuned car run cooler and safer. Such a good thing.
@@ZeroTo60Tube thank you!
What’s the name you f the app you lads use
The one you see in this vid is MHD. Is that the one you meant?
Does it really need the fmic? For stage 1+
Definitely if you are in a warmer climate. This car would pull timing on stage 1, let alone plus. But we were in 30c ambients on a average day. So could see I take temps at 70c. Anything over 40 isn’t ideal.
How would I know if my tubes aren’t connected to the inter cooler could anyone explain it to me plz
You won't have any boost
how come u lost abit of boost with the intercooler
What do you mean exactly?
@@ZeroTo60Tube the log with the new intercooler looked like u lost about 1psi of boost is that becuase it doest have to work as hard
Ali Express Intercooler?
22 Grad Differenz, nice
These cheap coolers are worth every damn cent. They "might" not be as good as a brand name one, but they are definitely working.
@@ZeroTo60Tube It doesn't have to be Wagner, don't think there are big differences
Is it normal to have a little oil in your Inter cooler
Unfortunately yes, so dont stress. Its normally caused by crank case ventilation (pcv valve). The oil vapour eventually builds up in to a small pool of oil.
Man, you lost some psi on peak power. 13.5 psi on new intercooler and 15 psi on old intercooler.
What's the reasoning on covering you license plate information because when you driving down the road people can see it but cant get any information from it because its not accessible to the public.
To hide the identity of the vehicle to the internet.
@@ZeroTo60Tube The only people to can get anything from your plates are the depart of transportation and the police. Someone could use it to get CARFAX information about the car but they would have to pay for that. And seriously your car is more exposed on the street and if someone really wanted to steal it, they could just follow you home or to work.
We live in Australia, you can get a lot of information from a registration plate here. Also by simply covering the plate, no one can know this cars vin, who owns it, what year it is or anything. It also stops any legal evidence being used to prosecute the owner of the vehicle if it happened to depicted breaking any road rules. For instance in australia, if the police obtain a video of a vehicle doing a small burnout (the law is if any amount of smoke is visible), they can fine the registered owner upwards of $1000 and confiscate the car for 48 hours, which then incurs towing and storage costs..... its absolutely mental the hooning laws here. None of the vehicles in any of our videos will show the license plate or the driver if the vehicle, is being used in a way that it shouldn't. Traffic offences are literally worse than rape here in Australia. In the early days we hid the plates all the time. However now we have had a few hundred cars on the channel, there is no way to accurately be sure with out any doubt what vehicle is in what video and who legally owns that vehicle.
@@ZeroTo60Tube That's really interesting. State did only the Department of Motor Vehicles or Law enforcement can pull that information. Also if you are doing something Illegal, they can get you that way if they have your information(plates). So I just finished watching your videos on the VIV V3 19T and to be honest, I love what you guys are doing with the channel. you guys are going into territories others haven't gone and also some updates of those turbos would be helpful.
why do aussies say three three five lmao
We say lots of weird shit but never understood the bmw line up. We say 3 one eight, 3 twenty, 3 twenty five, 3 thirty, 3 three five and 3 forty, so we switch back and forth. 🤣 we also tend to drink a lot sooooooo
Have you guys done a downpipe install?
Not on this car. Just rear muffler delete. The black 335 on the channel has downpipes.
