Thanks for watching. Stihl equipment has great reputation but does that apply to their cheaper stuff?
This video is meant as entertainment, always practice safety.
I’m only 14 and I started working on small engine equipment. I love to work on this kind of equipment and I always take care of my equipment doesn’t matter if it’s high or low to me
I like the way you think!
Just orded a carb (not a branded) for my Stihl FS 46 that was a barn find that the owner gave me for free =)
Thanks for the vid, keep em coming =)
no problem and thank you too
I take good care of my machines. One thing you can do, and it is what I do with my 2-strokes, is run the machine monthly throughout the winter, and you shouldn't have issues come springtime. I use 100% gas with Amsoil Stabilizer and Amsoil Saber. So I don't worry about the fuel going bad over the winter.
yes you are correct about the monthly running.
I could absolutely do a better job at taking care of my machines. That's one reason why I've tuned in to this channel, honestly. Small engine maintenance doesn't seem so daunting anymore.
you are correct, it does require some drive to do it, but spending money and having someone else fix it is typically enough for most people to try and take better care of it.
@@HomeGaragechannel Just got my Stihl back from the shop and it still doesn't want to start easy. Looks like all they did was slap a new carb on it. They didn't even give it a clean before charging me $150 for the "service". You can bet that I'll be doing my own maintenance and repairs from now on!
To answer your question about caring for my equipment. I try to keep my trimmers and mower in good condition and either run them a little all year or drain out the gas. My Murray riding mower lasted 20 years. My Craftsman trimmer is about 15 years old and still runs good. But the older I get the harder it is for me to use and take care of things. But I keep trying. Thanks for the videos..
you and me both , time is winning against me.
I've watched many many many tutorials. This one ranks beyond excellent. Every beat of this video was perfect.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Genuinely.
thank you MrRando, I appreciate that a lot
I've had trimmers given to me that were 2 stroke, they work for a while. I've even took three and attempted to make one frankentrimmer put that was short lived. I just wear myself out trying to start it. I had a cordless on but burned it up on tough grass, so I bought a nearly $400 4 stroke Husqvarna and love it.
nice choice
I mentioned on another video about a Homelite string trimmer my kid brought home that had a burned out cylinder... The shaft was used with an Echo GT1100 engine I had got when I purchased a bulk sale of old trimmers..
The engine bolted right on, the handle and trigger fit.
Score! Just need to get an air filter and filter cover...
A better machine all around!
Good work on the old Stihl!
thanks for sharing too !
@@HomeGaragechannel Welcome! These little engines are so much fun to work on..
I think so too.
You should discuss fogging the engines at the end of each season, a *must* here in Alaska for equipment that is stored over the winters.
you make a good point and yes that would be a great idea.
Wait…. What does fogging the engine mean? 😅
Glad to see another one brought back to life👍
Take care if your stuff and it'll take care of you.
you are correct!
How did you learn all this stuff? So cool. Thank you you teaching others 🙏🏼😊
by watching videos
After each and every use I always empty the tank, purge the carb, empty that drop out too then start the machine which usually only runs for a second or two then stalls. This simple routine has kept my machines running without problems season after season.
Thanks for sharing
As I've stated before, I work hard for my equipment so therefore I take very good care of my equipment. I do store them every winter indoors and with fuel. I store them with canned fuel and never had issues with them starting. My tractor and mower are store outside but they are kept in a shed and also with can fuel.
I'm on the fence about canned fuel. I like everything they say, but it's execution is a bit off.
@@HomeGaragechannel I really like the VP fuel. I was using True-fuel but the VP is a little higher octane and I've noticed a big difference in performance I can't find it in 40:1 so I get it in 50:1 and add a little oil to get it to 40:1. The main reason I use canned is non ethanol is hard to find in my area. If I was able to get It would use it instead. Canned is super expensive. Do you like the degreaser your using now or Super clean? I think the yellow degreaser is awesome
@@garyalensrre you saying the yellow stuff is awesome like it really works good, or Awesome as in the brand LA Awesome all purpose cleaner that the cheap dollar stores sometimes carry?
@@peskypeet No I'm referring to the yellow degreaser from Harbor freight, it comes in a one gallon jug. And yes I mean it really works good
I got a km131r stihl for free with 4 attachments, and it sat outside for 3 years getting snowed and rained on. All I did was adjust the valves and it fired right up.
nice work!
Great video, I take care of my machines, you can leave fuel in your 2 cycle equipment even during storage if you're using ethanol free premix fuel in a can from the store which is what I use.
yes you are correct
It’s amazing what a metering diaphragm can do.😊
He will think he has a new machine, after you cleaned it, he’ll keep it a bit better I hope.😊
I would hope so!
@@HomeGaragechannel I don’t mind keeping my FS85 on the shelf, I just pull out on of the FS38 or FS45 for those quick and easy jobs.
Good work. People always take the easiest route. Maybe recommend at the end of the season, empty the tank and run it till it dies. Why: Because it’s easy.
you're right about that, most are just happy that they don't have to mow anymore
With the cost of these machines,I keep mine stored in the shop and always drain /run dry when over the winter time here in Florida. I do have high end Stihl commercial equipment so all the more reason to keep them in perfect working order. Buy once cry once, but the key is just keeping up with your equipment and it will last you a lifetime.
well said and you're doing a great job maintaining them.
I have some really cheap machines and I treat them the same as my stihl. I take good care of my equipment, cheap or expensive I want them to last.
Alway empty the fuel tanks. As I have the tank upside-down, I press the purge bulb until all fuel leaves the carb. So avoiding running the engines lean.
very nice! you're doing a great job.
I mean, you can definitely save a lot of frustration and issues by using non ethanol gasoline, and a good two stroke oil with a fuel stabilizer. Once i swapped to non ethanol gas. And (my choice) for oil i use is Opti 2, no issues at all. Awesome video IHG!
yes agreed and thank you !
Another easy fix and great video. Keep up the great content
Thanks, will do!
Quick question: where do you dispose of used oil? I feel like disposing of oil is the #1 reason 4 stroke small engines don't get sufficient maintenance.
Into the 4 stroke? That's how you can use it
You should be able to take it to any local fire station for disposal. Also, a lot of auto shops and some service stations will dispose of it for you.
there are several recycling centers close to me, and most autoparts stores will take discarded oil.
As Aircraft mechanic by trade i am use to reading manuals and working on things and the golden rule is if you take care of it, I'll take care of you
very true, and always check that you're looking at the most current revision. thank you!
Ive used both straight and bend shafts I prefer straight shafts
I think most would agree with you
Great video. I have the same brand , same issue. Installed new carb won’t start. I have spark but not sure if it’s getting fuel to cylinder.
sure thing, take off the plug, and put a thimble of fuel into the engine and try staring it. If that doesn't work it could be flooded. Take the plug out and let it sit that way for a day, next day put the plug back in, use NO Choke, squeeze trigger and pull 7 times. see what happens. If it doesn't start then check the compression
Nice Video
I am Looking forward to trying out that degreaser !
you won't be disappointed!
Hey bro what's up? A simple yet effective video bro. I think that I should of been taking better care of my equipment a long time ago but without having proper access to the internet back then, I still did a reasonably good job taking care of my equipment.
I hear that, I've had to learn the hard way, a long time ago.
@@HomeGaragechannel we all have to learn in some way or the other.
i take care of my machines whether it,s 2 stroke aka 2 cycle or 4 stroke aka 4 cycle and i do regular checks per hour or so in between usage and a good cleaning in between use and they have never given me any issues etc.
I know you take pride in what you do, so I'd expect nothing less from you!
@@HomeGaragechannel yep too right mate.
I've used curved shaft trimmers before but i'd rather have a straight shaft. I love the echo SRM225. If possible i always try and save the original carburetor on anything i work on. I always try to take care of my equipment whether it be name brand or from a box store
yes I save all the carbs, I take off engines
What ratio do you use of degreaser to water ?
Love your videos. Thanks
no water, full concentration
The plastics are still surprisingly good given the condition that it was in. These homeowner grade Stihl's fall apart in the Australian climate, the plastics degrade and become flaky and brittle then you get white powdery stuff all over everything when you try to use it.
wow I didn't know that, is it from sun exposure?
@@HomeGaragechannel yep, it's really bad in Australia.
For your question,,, since the fuel is really poor n ethanol issues occured,,, always empty tanks and run dry before season storage and all is good now each new season !
that's the best idea.
I usually forget to dump the gas but I get cardio trying to start it and elevated heart rate from aggravation it's like a good workout.
LOL!!
I like the FS 38 and the other models like it. I like curved shafts I think they feel pretty comfortable, but I am also not too tall
I hear that too, some just like the curve shaft.
My Story, 😁 My Stihl BG-65 Blower 20 Years old ( from 2003 ) Sitting for 1 year, 1 pop and no start,,, (sitting for a Year !!) Removed air Cleaner and Started right up and Sounds Brand New !!! Time for more Spare Parts ! Reference the Fuel is 93 oct NO ALCOHOL Race Gas in My Area !!! 😁😁😁Before the Covid Cootie a few years ago I Used (100 LL ) Aviation Fuel From the Local Airport !!! For about 7 Years !!! NO PROBLEMS AT ALL !!! All My Stihl Gear Sounded Turbocharged !!!
very nice!
My stihl has spark weither the switch is on or off and I did a continuity test on the wires and switch and the wires and switch are both good it still has spark with the switchwires off the coil
I take really good care of my equipment. 👍🙏👍🙏
nice to know
Always a tradeoff with everything. Blessings
yes Sir
@@HomeGaragechannel Happy Weekend!
I have a tip that might help I rebuilt a carburetor on an FS 55 and the primer bulb was not pumping fuel when I had the return line off I put my finger over the return port on the carburetor and pumped it a few times and then it got gas in the primer bulb and after that and It still runs and cut like new today
nice work
I run my equipment for several minutes, dump the fuel and add a slug of Stihl Moto Mix to the tank and let it idle until it runs out of gas, several minutes. I then put it in full choke and pull it until it will not attempt to start, again and store it in my shop, cutting head up.
nice method!
Nice fix. Don’t you hate it when the model-SN are rubbed off? Always appreciate the quality of your videography.
I know right! so irritating and thank you for the compliment
I've had m fs46c for 6 years. I have taken very good care of it. It has always been a POS that never starts when I need it to. I've replaced the filters, bulbs, fuel line, exhaust screens, head, you name it. It is a POS.
sorry to hear that
Great video and much appreciated. I am having a time with my FS-55R. Some days it starts up fine. One pull on full choke and then one or two pulls on no choke. Other times I pull until my shoulder is out of socket and it will not start. I replaced the spark arrestor and didn’t help any. Any ideas?
Have you checked the metering diaphragm to make sure it isn't going bad?
sure replace the carb, but I would also follow the starting instruction according to the manual
passive aggressive end :D.
Love your vids!
Glad you like them!
I’ve had a variety of machines, and I’ll say this: if you have a larger property(say 1/2 acre or more use a straight shaft with a clutch.
What brand of fuel oil/ stabilizer do you recommend? Thanks
good advice and I use Sta-Bil,
Also what 2 stroke oil do you use?
i have a question my adjustment screws are not doing anything and the primer bulb wont fill up all the way and no nothing is clogged
the bulb doesn't have to fill completely, partial is fine.
Cool video and nice work man!
Thanks for the visit
For me FS38 work for lust 15 + years and no problem.
very nice, thank you for vouching for them
@@HomeGaragechannelall my stuff is stihl, son likes husqvarna products
great machines
May i ask what's that cleaner you always use on this stuff? Seems to do a great job.
sure, it's the degreaser from Harbor Freight
hey mate. I have got the fs 45c and I took the spark arrestor off to double check because was coming white smoke from the muffler and I realised there`s no screen at all on my spark arrestor, was pretty much just a bolt, is it right?
did you unscrew the bolt? The screen is at the other end of the bolt.
I have a Fs 38 that had the same problem. It wouldn’t pump up gas, but I manually primed it And it runs and you can use it but the primer bulb still won’t pump up gas
interesting, it would seem the return line or the check valve in the carb might be blocked
@@HomeGaragechannel ok thanks
What solution do you use to try and rejuvenate the diaphragm. Thank you.
No problem I use Dot 3 Brake fluid
What’s in that rejuvenation bath you places old diaphragm in? Oil?
I use brake fluid
What's that rejuvenation bath made of?
it's DOT 3 brake fluid
Are alll diaphragms on carbs besides being long or short shaft the same for all carbs or different brands require different diaphragms ?
no unfortunately they are sometimes different with extra holes for bolts, or air passages.
You can rinse it with water?(after spraying cleaner). I always freak when I accidentally left out in the misty fog
it can handle it.
@@HomeGaragechannel good to know. Thank you
What chemicals do you use to rejuvinate the metering diaphragm?
I use brake fluid
Is the degreaser in the description what you used to clean it? The whopper snipper looks like new !
yes it is
What water mixture are you using with that cleaner?
no water, full concentration
What was the mixture you put the old diaphragm in
it's DOT 3 brake fluid
I agree 100% about battery powered equipment. I will not buy any of these. I use batter powered drills and impacts ( DeWalt) but their batteries are cheap and available. Some batteries for powered equipment cost almost as much as the unit, itself.
yes for what you get their run times, battery might not be the right tool for you. I know it's not my preference at all either.
Damn brother you made her look new
thanks I tried
After cleaning the carb, I have a new problem. The weed eater starts fine and runs fine, but with one exception. When I release the throttle it returns to idle position, but it doesn't fully idle down and the head continues to spin rapidly. Suggestions?
have you tried to lower the idle speed by turning the idle set screw? Also, did you remove or make any adjustments to the Fuel adjustments screws when cleaning the carb?
@@HomeGaragechannel I didn't make any adjustments, and of the 3 screws there, I don't know which screw does what.
I would recommend getting a new carb. They are still very affordable and it'll keep you from having to mess with it more.
What is the rejuvenating solution for diaphragm?
it's DOT 3 brake fluid
I currently have my Stihl FS45 running over the weekend (5 minutes or so) at full throttle every now and then, but now 2 days later it no longer works and it has already flooded twice, maybe this will work but i also adjusted it then because it stuttered at full throttle, it still ran normally afterwards, but could I have done something that is causing it to have difficulty starting up now?
did you replace the metering diaphragm? If not, even with it "mostly" flexible and could be causing your issues
@@HomeGaragechannel I opened it yesterday evening, but the membrane with the metal circle and 5 small circles inside was not flexible and was still quite thick, so I should look at work for another caberateur or just buy a new membrane?
The problem with 2-Stroke Engines is that the Gasoline evaporates with the time and the mixed in engine oil does not ignite alone so that you barely are able to start it after several weeks. 4-Stroke Engines do not have THIS Problem.
interesting idea.
@@HomeGaragechannel I had this problem more than once with a 2-stroke scooter and a 2-stroke generator. Your tip with letting the carburator getting empty is very useful for such devices.
I've never had that problem. I don't like to mix large quantities (for a residential user) of 1 or more gallons at a time so I purchased a Stihl 1 liter gas can that has the mixture markings on it. Yes you have to mix more often but it keeps the amount of mixed fuel sitting around way down.
I also try to only purchase enough Premium Non E fuel to last me for a season. I keep it unmixed, in a black gas can, inside the garage, in a cooler dark space. When you introduce heat or light to gas over time it tends to degrade it.
@@peskypeet This is not a problem in a proper Gas Can (usually 5l here in Germany) but of the carburetor which evaporates the gasoline slowly over the intake filter. My scooter is a "self-mixer" and has that problem, too. My Gasoline Trimmer has a 4-Stroke Engine with no such problems. But avoiding Ethanole "enriched" gasoline helps against micro bioticals which live in the water-part of the Ethanol. At Diesel this is known as "Dieselpest" which cloggs fuel filters and injectors.
You have repaired several different 2 stroke engines and most have the same style carburetor. But why does it take some 2 or 3 pulls to start and some 10 ?
not sure
What was the cleaner stuff
it's the degreaser from Harbor Freight
What is wrong with the fs 38 trimmer you made a comment that it was not a very good trimmer I just bought one what is wrong with them
the FS38 is an entry level trimmer that's built overseas. Nothing wrong with entry level but when you buy a Stihl you don't expect it to be built overseas. It also seems to be underpowered, and not as reliable as the other models.
Well if you take care of it it should last you for several years right

Dumb question do you use a mix gas or just gas?
mix for 2 stroke, just gas for my 4 cycle
lol sounds like my parents “ tv on 24/7” well almost on that much.
probably
If you’ve used a straight shaft and curb shaft feels like a toy. Worst thing about them is they rotate the opposite direction. I wander if left handed people prefer curb shaft🤷♂️

how old is that gas that youre using?
the gasoline is 1 month old, and mixed with 2 stroke the day before.

The one thing a curve shaft weed eater does not have a grease fitting for the gear head 😮
I'm pretty sure none of the new ones do, straight or curved, Stihl or Echo.
@@robertbaysinger1309 that is the truth about that matter because I have a curve shaft echo gt 225 weed eater

@@HomeGaragechannel the question of the day is how you do grease it this would be a great video on to do that
I sell used equipment and parts on eBay
Stihl husky and ech are the only 3i fool with besides dolmar/makita on rare occasions.
I’ve come to believe the homeowner grade stihl is superior
Pro grade husky is closer in quality surpasses In performance -but they fail on sheer volume. Less pro dealer suppourt.
Echo is solid Japan made units are top notch.
Stihl is becoming questionable on some models like the bushing -for rod bearings in the blowers and 4mix engines. Junk….
I really do appreciate your insight on the market.
Dumb question I know you mentioned to empty out the gas and run it for a minute to make sure it’s all out when storing for longer periods of time but wondering if not having any liquid around Parts would also cause it to dry up get brittle and break overtime? I don’t know what the solution for that would be. Also wonder since everything is made of crap these days due to supply chain or the price of everything going up and companies not wanting to use material that cost more or/and regulations on certain chemicals (just thinking of all the comments I read after the train derailment in Ohio and the chemicals it was transporting comments like why do we even need that stuff. People don’t get how the world works like let’s get rid of oil and then discovering EVERYTHING uses oil. I digress) or materials to also be higher in price but wondering if you’ve noticed even new machines and their components breaking down faster or not even new new ones but let’s say past ten years or so? I don’t know if that made any sense but just wondering. I mean just look at Boeing and the parts flying off, they say due to fake Metal I forget what kind of metal it was? carbon? I don’t know anyways. And also fact DEI hires.
it's a risk I don't mind taking, besides, it's only a couple of months, not years
