By far the best tip for buying any instruments. With the qc less expensive brands have shown lately, the brand doesn't matter near as much as it did 15 or 20 years ago. And avoid forums, too many gear snobs in the forums. Too many of us buy with our eyes.

I always play a guitar unplugged first when test driving, sometimes there is something about the guitar I don’t like and so I put it back, no need to plug it in, no matter how great it might sound. The sound doesn’t matter if I don’t like it otherwise.
I bought a guitar without plugging it in, and normally I know I am buying it before I plug it in.

    • @death32815

I've always played it first, if I like the look and feel the tone is a secondary trait that can be changed. If the most amazing sounding guitar ever found it's way into my hands, but it just looked like a plain Stratocaster and I didn't like the way it felt I wouldn't buy it, vice versa if the worst sounding guitar ever came along, but it was interesting and I liked the way it felt I would buy it. I actually have one that is an example of the second one, it is waiting for new pickups but it is currently behind the other two that need new pickups and my main axe that needs new tuning machines

My two tips (one you covered in a way): First, get a guitar that compels you to play it. That's rule number one. Whether aesthetic or feel, you need to want to pick it up. Second, never try out new licks on a guitar you might be serious about. If you're not a new player, we all have tried and true licks, riffs or runs. All of us. Guess what? That's the stuff you use to try a guitar. You know how they feel on other guitar(s) you've tried or owned. It gives a 'like-for-like' comparison.

Ignore any inconvenience that can be later set up (action, intonation, neck bow...). Bring your own workhorse guitar and make a fair comparison. Try different amps or pedals and make sure you get a sound that you're familiar with, you're testing a guitar, not an amp. If you can ask to save it and come back the next week, let the idea grow on you, maybe you'll decide to get a different thing.
And yes, have fun and do things you enjoy, go for the one you dream of.

Check the knobs and switches. They should move smoothly and without extra effort or awkwardness, and they shouldn't make a lot of noise when plugged in. Noise and gritty, awkward-moving knobs and switches mean dirty pots and connections at best, maybe a faulty solder joint, and in the worst case need replacing.

Play lots of guitars once you have done your research and checked that the guitar is a good one. Once you have narrowed it down to a selection buy the one you can't put down or keep picking up. You will become a better guitarist if you play the guitar you enjoy playing the most because you will play it more. That means more than the colour to me. You fall in love with the guitar you enjoy playing and its finish.

Guitar buying tip: Put the guitar down, go home, and get good with the gear you already have. It's not about the ax, but the swing that cuts down the tree.
On a more serious side, whenever I go to buy a new guitar, I try to stay focused on what I'm looking for. Are you looking to replace your Stratecaster? Then don't waste time looking at Les Pauls. Know what you're looking for and why.
However, you may find your true love when you least expect it. My main bass is an active 5 string soap-bar J-bass, and I found it when I went into the store looking for a passive 4-string P-bass. I did not buy it that day however, but a week later when I couldn't stop dreaming about her I knew I had to go back and see if she was still there.

Tyler I watched a video where you declared 3 6 8 was the proper sequence to play Smoke on the Water. I had seen a live video of Richie Blackmore playing it. It dawned on me you are wrong. Richie barely moves his hand to play the riff. 368 cannot be correct. I reviewed the live performance then found a video of how to correctly play the riff. It is 5(AD) 3(DG) 5(DG) 5(AD), 3(DG) 6(DG) 5(DG), 5(AD) 3(DG) 5(DG) 3(DG), 5(AD). I love your videos but this is correct because Richie Blackmore says so! Per his live performance. Keep rocking!

Tip #20....Dont buy into the hype. Just because everyone on the internet goes insane because they HAVE to have a Silver Sky or they HAVE to have an Epiphone Dave Grohl, does not mean the guitar will resonate with you. Find one, try it and make sure it will be something that gets YOU excited...then purchase it if you want.
I have played about 10 Silver Skys...and none of them resonated with me. So hype does not always translate to personal joy.

my biggest tip is dont buy guitars from a store that is super close to the ocean and in an area that gets heavy humidity.
Bought a guitar from the fountain valley guitar center in California. Had to use moisture packs to save her. thing would literally start sweating while i was playing it. i would wipe it down dry, play it for a few minutes, all of a sudden there would just be a light coat of moisture on the entire body and neck. Took me a solid week and a half to make sure she was nice and dry. after that no problems, but if i hadn't noticed right away and done as much as i could to keep it dry and clean, as well as to let it let out all that excess moisture, it would have probably ended up in the trash. Granted the guitar center really should have been better climate controlled, point still stands. make sure the store is either perfectly climate controlled, or its not somewhere where the guitar can take a bath while remaining suspended on the wall via air moisture.
Nothing would have been more painful to me than getting home and throwing that Gretsch i just spent almost 800 dollars on right in the garbage. Super glad i didn't end up having to do that but yeesh, what a scare.

Go with a non-musician if possible and have them point out a "pretty one" I never would've bought my Gretsch had it not been pointed out for me.

Do you like it? Does it play well and suit your style? Can you afford it without going into debt? Get out that CC and take it home.

Tip #0 Use two hands when taking down and putting up a guitar, especially pricey or rare models. The owner will have a heart attack/scream at you if you don’t.

But if it’s a relic how would anyone know if you clonked them together? They shouldn’t put them that close together in the first place.

I REALLY don't understand the factory relic thing. Why pay more to own a guitar that fakes its own history? Or is it to protect the buyer from the agony and pain of a first scratch on the custom paint job?

And also bring your own gear with you where possible - if you're buying an amp bring your own guitar, if you're buying a guitar try and plug it into either your actual amp or a close/the same model.

Don't let brand names and relatively low cost lead you to believe that something is low quality. Instead, ignore that stuff and find an instrument that sounds/feels good. There are lots of hidden gems out there
