Hi Dylighted, I know you get a lot of hate for some reason but if you happen to read your comments just know that I appreciate your uploads and gameplay. Thanks for the entertainment and good luck with everything you do!
I think going for the wood port was the game changing blunder. That turn you could of settled and used your knight to get pacing on army. Then if you stole a wood or a wheat, you can build another dev with a the three for one port if it was wood that you stole.
After you mentioned him in one of your videos, finally had some Neonate vids pop up in my feed. It was like spotting a Sasquatch or something. The TRUE Catan OG Fascinating!
GothamChess for Catan sounds like an awesome goal. I do hope Catan explodes like Chess and Poker, like you said. And, being an engineer with lots of programming experience, I'd also love to have a Catan AI solver. The insights into the game provided by it could be pretty cool
Hey dylan, I think it would be super fun and cool to try another version of catan! Like “gold rush” or the wood one. A different map entirely! The country map is okay. But that’d be fun to watch!
yo Dylighted, big fan of your content and watching you play. according to your titles, every single one of your games is INSANE. your content is better than the clickbait titles, man :)
He needs more viewers. After getting all the genuine Catan aficionados, Dylan is now fishing for morons who are attracted to capital letters and red arrows, like moths are attracted to light.
13:31 "This is where I wish the Catan solver would help me out with my decision." -- In chess, this is known as cheating. If you are caught cheating in chess, your career is ended right there. You really don't want to be the Hans Niemann of Catan.
@@0neLastHerpsure. But Dylan wished for a solver to help him with his decision, during the game. He didn't wish for a solver to help him find better moves in his post game analysis. One is cheating and the other is not. Isn't the difference obvious?
The main thing to think about and what you have to consider when going for army or road is that getting army takes multiple turns, and some games there just isn't the time to wait to get army. And of course depends if you're ahead on race. But with road, a couple lucky rolls and you can get it in a turn, so it makes for a fast win. Also, I think on the 'should play knight?' part, I'm not sure if playing the knight is super necessary there. It really depends on if you think the 9 rolls that turn. If you don't think it will then maybe play knight after(in case of 7). I don't think robbing a lesser player makes sense in case of 7. Unless maybe you know they have a card you need that others don't then maybe. But it can result in gaining an enemy too. But yeah, 7s are more statistically likely than 9s, so assuming that a 7 could roll would have a huge plus there, and best case it does roll and you get to save knight. Since the double rob usually makes it seem like a knight is 'wasted'. But yeah I personally choose to play knights more conservatively. Just because a spot your on is blocked doesn't mean you have to play a knight. There is a limit to the number of knights(14), so that is something to consider. And after playing the knight, there may be a chance that a minor inconvenience of being blocked one turn can mean later on a tile is blocked that if you could knight to remove block can determine a win from a loss. And lastly, if you hold knights, it makes it harder for your opponent's to read other devs you may have like vps/mono, and if you can convince people you may have a vp, then saving the knight can lead to a late game take army if opponent's don't continuously buy more devs.
0:14 "I am playing in the 1st position, on this fascinating board over her." -- I'm trying to figure out what is fascinating about this board. Hmm, the 11 is in the middle, the robber is on the desert, all the ports are touching the ocean, fascinating!
Great Videos love your informative content. Gotta ask though, did you find out that saying fascinating increase engagement on UA-cam? Feels like it's been a major buzzword since you started posting again.
I believe the correct rob was from blue when black and orange had 8 cards. Black needs to dodge 2 sevens, which means he runs a 1/3 risk of losing a minimum of 4 cards. Orange's risk is 50/50 to lose a minimum of 4 cards. EV for both scenarios, even if they still have 8 cards if the 7 rolls, is for them to lose more than the 1 card you steal. Granted, you also have to add the possibility of the card you steal benefiting you while unblocking your own number. Black might be the rob but I think we leave orange alone there.
Hey Dylighted, for the competitions I think a key component is price money. When I look at e.g. T90 he hosts tournaments in Age of empires 2 with the best players in the world for couple hundred bucks ^^ Multiple rounds -> more content.
That dice distribution is nuts. That's why I don't think catan will ever have the competitive scene that poker does, since no one likes to lose because their game didn't last long enough for things to normalize.
You used the wood port once, and risked the plow which would be gg. Really not sure why you thought that was the right play. But gg anyways. Also, is a Catan AI in production / testing or is it just speculative? Because I feel like its yeeeeeears away from being viable. Unless its giving advice about trades to make / tracking cards etc its gna be pretty useless anyway. It will suggest opening set-ups but without advice on how to actually play the set-up its also kinda useless.
a solver cannot generate an unexploitable strategy in a game of more than 2 players competing each others. The reason is , often, a -EV play of player A changes the equilibrium and accidentally costs EV of B when others (C,D,E,...) exploit A. For example, you can still play like a solver in multiway pots and ICM situations in Poker and still make -EV actions from time to time.
Hello dylighted. I know that you talked about a catan AI. I have done programming before. That is something that I am willing to consider doing as a project. I would need some good funding to work on it full time.
What about sometimes trying to get road instead of getting devs? Not like you didn't have space or something and I don't agree with the road at the start towards the port. You should've gotten plowed but got lucky with the 4 and 8 to road settle instead of orange
on your point about a potential Catan AI... those are the same arguments used for every niche AI has come and dominated. Be it Chess, Go, or even Diplomacy. honestly, if AI can play GO or Diplomacy, it can crush Catan np.

Firstborn child... AND a non block! XD That got me! Also love your vision for Catan content creation, keep it up, Dylan! Excited to see what happens!

Catan sopver would 100% tell you to build production on the 3:1 port over dev cards. Production pays out more In the longru
If diplomacy can have an AI a game that is all human interaction, Catan can
“…and a nonblock” was fucking comedic genius
Love your vids Dylan! Gotta ask: did you start saying “fascinating” this much to increase those YT metrics? I know you’re a student of the algo🤓
No it’s just something I say. But I’m going to probably stop now that everyone is mentioning it 😂
Interesting that both you and Danny mention chess

at 6:31 maybe better to go for the 6:12:11 spot?
damn those dice *are* crazy. those odds must be super small. very short game too, so no chance to level out.
Keep up the good work Dylan 🔥
If you were on the 6-11-12, you would’ve had nothing 😂

Hey @dyl this might be a silly question but are those cities that pop up as you’re planning a feature of colonist, or an edit on the video?
Edit
You got this Dylan!
how many online tournaments are there?
blue *really* should have settled on the sheep port before going for the 5 6 12.
heyt what about settling 4-10-9 double ore + sheep and poiting road down to expand on the 10/9?
I feel like the risk is that the 9 10 might get taken away

9:36 last time I played catan with my gf I got her to trade me a brick and immediately cut her off, catans cut throat like that

What's a "-EV play"?
Correct answer: it depends
My personal answer bcuz of my ego: NEVER
I'm addicted to ore wheat sheep

I could do it for 60

who was number 1 rank last season?

i think dandydrew finished as rank 1? i forget though and i might be mixing up seasons
you haven't posted in over a month... "i have to post daily"
If they do make a solver you shouldn't be using it while playing, that's just cheating.
The comment was clearly tongue-in-cheek

I have some interest in making Catan AI. Do you know if people are currently working on it?
