Robbie Robertson is right there with Bob Dylan as one of the greatest songwriters that ever lived but the original version by Rick Danko is untouchable, it's incredible his emotion!
so true about robbie. he is so far way up there in the pantheon and people just don't know it because he largely didn't sing (couldn't sing) his genius tunes. And the fact that he is apparently an incorrigible, petty human doesn't help. this song is exquisite.
They did a great job of channeling a mixture of Rick Danko and their own life experience. I'll give them all the credit there is for NOT ignoring (as if one could) what Rick gave to this song. I think Rick would be shocked that there was ANY negative comments on this stunning live performance. Listen to the crowd's applause, that says it all.
Blayne Marlo I just said something similar on another video of Warren Haines doing it. This is a damn impossible song to do after hearing Danko do it. Shivers down my spine. But I have to give it to this version they capture the desperation quite well. If you ever try and do this tune you will find everyone in the band has to absolutely be into it and lose themselves in it. Otherwise it just fails. One of the most if not The Most beautiful songs ever.
It's impossible to listen to this and not hear the pain in Rick Danko's voice and the sax played by Garth on the Last Waltz version Make grown men cry every time It's a brave band that takes this on and pulls it off so well
Greatest love song ever written. Just when you think you've heard one of the greatest lines ever written it just keeps coming back with another brilliantly written lyric. Absolutely astounding!!!
Greatest ever....???... Really???.... I have a feeling there are at least 10 or 20 that we feel just as passionate about.... But because you just watched the video before your commented.... You get caught up in the emotion of how great that song is.... You just inspired me.... To think of the greatest rock and roll love songs... And that is about as gargantuan as any task I have ever taken on when it comes to music list.... Who knows.... When I'm done.... I may owe you an explanation.... If this beautiful number is still on top without anybody even tying it.... When my search has concluded???,.... I'll have to remember to come back to this page of comments...... So others can see it and comment.... Because you are not the only one who said it was the greatest...., Standing alone..... As the greatest love song / ballad ever..... To do a thorough job.... On such an important project.... I assume I'll put about 6 hours a day into this.... And be back to you around 2023..... Maybe 22 ??? PS. Without giving it more than about 45 seconds of thought.... I came up with a couple.... But I have no idea if they'll make the list or not?.... Melissa..... Allman Brothers Clapton....... Wonderful Tonight Elton..... Too many to list.. Your song & Tiny Dancer Jerry.... To lay me down Stones.... Wild horses
@@buddyokeefe49 with respect to all those songs you listed; great love songs every one. Still, this one here, sung by Danko is the best, but this version too, emotions just, man, can't explain it.
Love the fact that a band of this magnitude isn’t afraid to take so many classics and cover them. One The Band’s best, and one would think it sacrilegious to cover it, but MMJ is right there honoring the song. Total respect for The Band. They and Nathaniel Rateliff did a fabulous version of “Feelin’ Alright” when I saw them. Same thing. Total respect for those who performed it previously. Love, love, love MMJ.
Cynthia Madrid you’re so right. Robbie once said: “I wrote this from the perspective of, ‘time heals all wounds, except in some cases, and this is one of those cases”
It really does doesn't it...This song is so sad just like its topic, but at least it's a helping reminder of that you are not alone in being let down by love.
@@mungofinalfi4480 The way the song lyrics just trail off with no conclusion..no resolution..no peace.. kind of how The Band finished off as a group..So much respect for this talent. This version is solid..
T Wal - agree - u must have read "This Wheels On Fire" too - so much we didn't know and credit not given to those who deserved it. A must read. Watching "The Last Waltz" ain't the same now. Back to this cover: my favorite Band song and it gives me goose bumps and jerks the tears every time. MMJ does a super cover on "Love for Levon" and Yim Yames and Britany pour it out on this one. Love for Rick Danko - nothing can touch that, but awesome that the song lives on.
I am probably the biggest The Band fan on here, look at my name! I am also a huge fan of Jim James...with Brittany Howard, they absolutely knock this one out of the park. No one can touch Rick Danko, this is HIS song but this performance comes the closest I’ve ever seen!!
This performance is SSIICCKK!!! It’s not fair that the 5 or 6 people on this stage, hoarded up all the “coolness,” whereby leaving precious little for the other 7 billion of us to parse out amongst ourselves.
This is a worthy rendition. No question. But even though he didn't compose it, Rick Danko owns this song in the same way that Joe Cocker owns the Beatles With A Little Help From My Friends. Both due to their incomparable deliveries. The Band was a amazingly talented ensemble of which I was a fan in Toronto before they had this name. Yet even in 2021 if you ask me who was their #1 vocalist I can give 3 different answers depending on the day you ask. That is something I could never say about any other band of memory.
@@2zxodcfm yessir that’s what I meant (Ringo could sing too). I also think McVie, Nicks and Buckingham can be part of the conversation with a band with 3 #1 singers but I adore The Band and I like your point about their great vocalists.
Good but never never never will be Rick Danko, not only a truly unique voice but a totally righteous and kind man that Ive met many times and miss so much...There is no one like The Band..but hey still good...
I should of looked closer for the dates. Sorry for posting a negative. Did not understand. Love the band and love My Mourning jacket also. Very talented band.
I don't care that she's not a model. Girl can flat-out SING. That's why the current state of music is a mess. Companies are trying to market looks instead of musical talent. The music is secondary to them, and the "singers" are disposable. Gone in a few weeks to make way for the next person who can shake their ass. Thank god there are REAL musicians like MMJ, the Shakes, and a few others to carry the torch.
Disagree with the comment below about the dedication to Levon as being in "poor taste." I realize this is Rick's song but Levon has been a symbol for The Band and carried on their tradition through the years, so many younger musicians (like Jim James) probably looked up to him. Also, Levon may have experienced health troubles at this time, which is part of the reason for the dedication.
Rick sang it of course; and I thought it was pointless anyone else ever doing it. But I was wrong. And I thought no-one could out-sax Garth. This guy (don't know his name and I should) comes close. And never forget it was Robbie's song. He deserves credit too.
Who couldn't love Brittany Howard? Love her soul. Danko did sing his heart out, but this has something as well! The sax ain't Garth Hudson either, but it has it's own grandeur as does the guitar!!
Didn't know that so I pushed on the "like" button above :( Still the best love song ever and Brittany's great together with the band. There those tears go again.
I didn't know either! A silly comment I suppose. These guys a really good band no hate for them whatsoever. Just feel as though Levon would of wanted Rick and Richard to be recognized as well. All three are greatly missed.
I'm normally not a fan of the sax but the player here does every bit as good a job as Garth Hudson. I'm still not a convert but these few seconds are sublime.
took some giant balls to try and do this song...it's my opinion that it cannot be done. we all became too far immersed in the many much more haunting danko versions too long ago to be swayed. just sayin'...

Can't compare Jim James and Rick Danko. Jim and Brittany do a wonderful job. They stay true to the way The Band did it
