    Liking your videos. Love the early 80's Hornby locos, so easy to resurrect. The age of the loco is on the instructions. Looks like 4th November 1980.

    Always thought it was such a pretty loco, I'd still happily have one despite it not being my era but I'd give it a turn every now and then cos it's so nice.

    Love what you're doing on this channel which I've been checking out for the last few days. Makes me want to get all my old stuff out of storage. I could give 'em all a good service so when I finally get a new layout operational they'll be ready to go. Thanks and keep them coming!

    Have you thought that it might need running in as if it hasnt been used for that much and especially if it had been sitting as static display for so long it may need to be run in.
    I have learned from you that servicing is paramount in keeping your locos running and so far I have brought at least 6 out of 7 locos back to life (one 0-6-0 black triang shunter needs an insulating bearing as the wheels keep falling off it and keeps getting jammed as the isolating bearing is badly worn out ) so far and a big thanks to you for watching yours and other peoples videos so thankyou for that.
    The windings in the original motor look to be in really good nic.
    Anyhooo thanks again.
    Cheers from John in Australia.

    I have the same loco but in BR colours that makes the same noise, I had it from new as a teenager in the 1980's and from memory its always made that noise. Currently having issues with the pick ups (?) not working properly after getting it down from the loft after 20-30 years of not being used, probably in need of a service! But great, info,ative video, thanks

    Its a great locomotive! Very beautiful. But one problem in my opinion:
    The motor sounded liked it smoked too much.

    I can't remember what locomotive I had but I used a screwdriver to move the worm drive down the shaft about a millimetre and what a difference it made, I am sure it an x 04 motor

    • @oobill
      @oobill  3 роки тому +3

      Yeah there can be a sweet spot with the gear mesh that requires a little trial and error to find. You need to be careful adjusting the worm with a screwdriver though you can bend the front plate or damage the thrust bearing and make things worse. With this motor though its the bearings. A fine example of what not lubricating them does over time.

    Somebody may have already suggested this, but would using an X04 motor instead of an X03 be any better? I recall reading that the X03 was an economized and perhaps lower quality step by Hornby that had a lower standard. I haven't run my 4P 2-6-4T as I no longer have a layout but I remember my little Ivatt 2-6-0 was a sweet quiet runner, though I like to tell myself it was the brass little wagon wheels I put in the pony truck to replace the missing ones that mad all the difference.

  • @_RandomPea

    Hey @OOBill. I love my bargain maroon 4P; but I've run into a weird one post service today and can't work out what i've done wrong. Battery to the motor is working fine and i've fixed the squeak it was having at the front axle. Trouble comes when i put it all back together the motor seems to short itself out. if i connect a battery to the brushes it will turn, as long as the collectors aren't in place against the wheels. I'm not sure how i've managed to do that. I've localised the issue to the wheels but the wheelset pretty much only has one way round... so its not like the axles are round wrong way... any ideas?

    • @oobill
      @oobill  2 роки тому

      Most of the time I don't use one as they don't really help much with disassembly or re-assembly. I use them more for identifying part numbers for spares . When I do and just get it from Lendons or elsewhere on line.

    • @_RandomPea

    Why don't you use 'spray grease' which if sprayed onto a plate can be applied as oil but which soon changes to grease

    A lovely looking loco. I wonder, it sounds like both motors are growling/buzzing even though one is quieter than the other. I wonder if these older motors have an incompatability with your controller? Have you a different, older controller to test it with? Just a thought?

      00Bill I’ve got a Hornby 08201 that’s rather noisy, usually sits in a siding but is full of character when it is rolling and far more reliable than my Bachmann 08!

    • @oobill
      @oobill  3 роки тому +3

      @@TheElDoctoro24 The X03 and X04 motors are bad for noise due to the poor bearings. Especially the X03. But yes sometimes it can be part of the character of the loco.
