- Episode 401 : Season 13 : Sailing Indonesia
Hello Friends,
On this episode we head over to the largest of the Banda Islands, Banda Basar with Mr. Man to get a tour of the Nutmeg Plantation. One of my favorite things about sailing the world is getting to travel back in time by knowing the history of a place. The fact that this was the only place in the world Nutmeg, Mace and Cloves grew is mind blowing to me! And with any rare commodity there is a dark side of the history as well with the VOC killing 90% of the Bandanese people.
If you are ever cruising through the Spice Islands make sure you hire Mr. Man for a tour.

Mother nature has provided everything we need. Thanks for sharing your tour with us.
Hi James and Rhonda. Can't find the words that say what I thought of this episode.
Awesome, fantastic, enjoyable, and any other superlative that fits. Thanks heaps for this episode. Loved every minute of it. Just WOW. Thank you. Only one thing missing. Was being able to enjoy the smell of the different spices. But again, thank you. All the very best.
Fantastic Tour.
You two are the best channel going, thank you ❤

That was just neat ❤
Wow!! Just gets better and better! Excellent vlog once again 😊
I was in that area two years ago but our trip didn’t have time for a visit such as yours. I wish we would have taken the time.
Awesome chapter your next journey.. Thank you for sharing James and Ronda!
How many people can say they'd be able to pick out an almond tree in a line-up? All of us, now, thanks to you guys! Loved learning about all the spices - seeing them in their natural state, and harvested, the process. Also never knew the history of the Spice Islands. I couldn't help but think of how some things never change - another country steps in and just decides to plunder another one, just because they can. Like I said, some things never change! Keep up the good work you two! And Happy New Year from North Truro, Cape Cod XO
I’ve just been rereading about Sir Francis Drakes voyage and his time in the Spice Islands. Must be such a cool perspective to travel around their by boat
First class videologue and commentary including historical. Congratulations Team Yanquis Kiwi.
I have returned from a pre Christmas break away, this video was a true gift. It reminded me of my 3 weeks on an island off Vanuatu, they had similar canoes with the seats made from skinny branch sized wood, extremely uncomfortable to sit on, but to take your mind away from the pain there was a bucket to bail water from the bottom of the canoe. Thank you for this video, i will now view the others i have missed out on. Happy sailing and enjoy the new year too.
That was fascinating
That was a really cool video, thanks for sharing 😀👍
Love the architecture and stone work!!
Great episode, guys. All tour guides should be as good as Mr. Man.
Good video folks.
I'm not sure if the men who gave you the tour & the workings of their cultivation techniques will see this, but i felt a need to say: thanks men, your time & sharing with us was *appreciated*.
🙏🦉
🏞️
such a beautiful peaceful place.
Wow guys, that was absolutely incredible to go along with you. Superb video work and you are so into what you are seeing that it rubs off on us viewers…..
Thankyou for sharing your tour!
Thanks for this amazing video! I had no idea what a long and at times violent history the spice trade has! Great tour!
The buttress roots on the almond trees are interesting in that they don't fan / spread out very far to have to support the weight of such a tall and large tree .
Moreton bay fig trees in Australia send a lot thicker buttress roots out a lot further under its canopy to support a tree that grows to probably half the height of what those Almonds look .
Thanks!
Thanks for the contribution 🙏🏻 I appreciate it
Mace is a bright red membrane surrounding the nutmeg shell!
Just amazing!
Cheers from Southern California USA 🇺🇸 ❤
Hello from Bali, enjoy your time in indonesia😊
Excellent. Really enjoyed it.
Happy New Year Cap James n Ronda , have a Great 2025
Just wow! Thanks for all you put in to your channel. This video was just amazing and informative, love the history!
It is bizarre to think that whole wars were fought and genocides for spices before refrigerators and sugar was killed for. Must smell great. Cool greenery in the well. Nice block of wood/knife technique. Thanks for vid.
Sadly humans have been killing each other since they figured out how to use a stone as a weapon
Thanks for sharing this. Love your channel. This was for me one of nicest episode.
Thanks
Thank you 🙏🏻
Happy New Year, guys. I wish you both all the best and happiness in the world for the new year.
Thank you both for the lovely life-off sailing 😊🎉🎉
Looks like a nice life in that village

Slowly getting through your videos James.... in no particular order. Great stuff man. :)

I just read a book called Batavia about a ship ( the Batavia) A great True story of Mutiny, a shipwreck, murder, greed and sex slavery...Awesome read! sailed from Texel in the Netherlands for the Dutch East Indies, to obtain spices.
Absolutely wonderful.

Great Video.
Very soothing content man!

Another great video. I just don’t understand why your subscribership isn’t much bigger. The quality of your channel and your skills are exceptional. When i was cruising we didn’t have UA-cam as a source of income and expression.
I am happy with my subscriber numbers but really wish more of my subscribers actually saw the videos in their feeds
@ I get all of your videos. ( I assume). And watch them all. Good stuff. The quality and the content are very good.
@@SailorJamesI have seen all of your videos and I keep hoping I missed one so there would be a new one to watch, but I really should appreciate the volume you produce. You make a LOT of content. And it is all high quality. Your art background shows. Also, I buy every book you mention. But I've never heard you talk about Moby Dick. You ever read that?
What does Mr.Man charge for his elaborate tour? Thx, loving your videos
$36usd each for the boat ride and the tour
I miss my Alberg 30!
If you can engage in nature you have it all
What lovely people

@@SailorJames ya right there. I thought it looked familiar.ok cheers
Great video did you buy nut meg to put on your coffee, cloves are good for your blood, tooth ache, put 1clove beside the tooth, it numbs the pain, put in your coffee/ tea
Yes we bought bags of nutmeg, clove and cinnamon

Do you have hf. Would be fun to give you a shoutout ?
No I don’t have one
🩵⛵️💙🎉🥂
Now I see why almonds are so expensive.
Sir James ❤
I wanted to review the Avatar after this video .
How many miles were sailed for spices? Nutmeg was a mainstay in Colonial America. I can understand the strong desire for things like this, especially medicinal spices. What i never understood was the lust for gold. It's actually pretty useless other than for making trinkets.
I have always found this fascinating as well, humans love shiny things 😂
Gold is an incredible thing. It will never tarnish, even after thousands of years. You can pound it out to an incredible thinness and it is still usable. So it preserves what it plates. It is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity, a contact that never tarnishes. It can be used in medicine. It's more than just beautiful.
I'm not sure that is safe?
Safety is over rated 😂
bro, you should do what that youtuber did from ASP , he shaved his beard ,cleaned up and his subs went thru the roof
Bro, I ain’t desperate.
@@SailorJames ok cool, we enjoy the channnel, lisa my lady suggested you shave, either way im sorry james
@@SailorJames ok. i'll unsub, just a suggestion...carry on sailor
I just lol'd.. shave the beard? Naaa...@@SailorJames
What an odd recommendation to suggest to a sailor.
there was a time when you faced the death penalty for taking clove tree cuttings from Zanzibar and that is nowhere near the spice islands,,
Those clove trees originated from the Spice Islands at some point
@@SailorJames you could well be right James but having been to Zanzibar several times when i lived in Tanzania the people off Zanzibar would disagree however it would be difficult to prove one way or another,,,love your vids followed you since LA, keep up the good work.
OK i I youtubed it!!
