    So I pulled the oil dipstick on my Mercury Outboard Motor to find gas in my oil. Of course I was concerned, but I found the fix and its up and running again.
    Fuel Pump I bought: amzn.to/38YK3DX
    My OEM fuel pump part number is: 880890T1

    I'm pretty sure this video saved my life. I had a stuck float issue on my Polaris Trail Blazer 330. I got the carb out and fixed that and noticed a whole lot of gas in the intake on the motor side of the carb. I sponged it up and out and determined it was caused by a clogged carb bowl drain hose (maybe that contributed to the float issue... I dunno). I got the thing running again but it continued to reek of gas but ran okay and no leaks I could find. As I was contemplating what was going on, I recalled this video and thought hey... maybe some gas got into the oil since so much got past the carb into the intake. I pulled the oil dipstick and a mixture of oil and gas came STREAMING out! Turns out I'd been driving around on that ATV with an oil pan absolutely filled to the brim with gas and the original oil. I'm pretty sure that means I was driving around on a gas bomb just waiting for the right spark to show up. So.... thanks for this video. Had I not seen it, I don't know that I'd have thought to check the oil so soon in my ATV and who knows what could've happened.

    • @SeidelRanch

      Dang, that's crazy. I thought the same thing when I pulled my boat motor dipstick. All that gas could have just blew that thing up. I guess they do that by design for whatever reason, but it's scary. Glad you found that before something bad happened. I am sure the engine does not like it either.

    Same problem here. I bought the actual Mikuni replacement for $240. I had read reviews on the cheap $35 units and they pop the diaphragm a lot, but if we are aware of this problem…. Your suggestion of checking regularly is a less cost effective idea. At $35 I could have bought several and kept them shelved like my own parts store store hahahaha. Good video.
    Btw. My mercury 115 was running fine I shut it off to fish. when I restarted my boat would never plane out and only had a top speed of 10 mph.

    I have a pair of 2005 115 Yamaha Outboards that I bought a few months ago. The previous owner put ethanol into the boat and just let it sit for a year or two. The fuel absorbed a ton of water which ruined the fuel pump diagphram I think. Then the dirty fuel pumped into the oil just like this, except the oil turned milky brown as it had so much water. All this took me a while to figure out and the right outboard actually caught on fire before I realized what was going on. I got the fire out before serious damage occurred and have changed the fuel pump and thermostat out and it starts up like a new motor. But long story short, this seems to be a common problem in 115HP engines from around that year as they all share the same fuel pump design. Your mercury fuel pump looks interchangeable with my yamaha version.

  • @GrassLogic
    @GrassLogic Рік тому +3

    For anyone watching this to troubleshoot their problem - if you pull the fuel pumps and find they aren't leaking fuel into the crank case (like mine), check that your thermostat isn't stuck open (like mine was lol). A cold running engine will cause fuel to pass the rings and collect in the crank case.

      I have this exact problem, only I changed the thermostat becasueb I noticed on flushing the engine it wasn't cycling through hot and cold from the tell tale. I guessed it was running on choke all the time hence the overfuelling and the petrol getting into the oil. Unfortunately, it still kept making oil, so the pump will be next, 1

    So when I pulled my fuel pump out, and squeeze the bulb, no fuel comes out or sprays out of the pump. But there is 100% fuel in the oil, and the oil is runny as you stated. Could it still be the fuel pump? I have one on order, and plan on changing out pumps, but I was hoping to get some opinions.

    • @SeidelRanch
      @SeidelRanch  2 роки тому +2

      My pump leaked through the diaphragm so you could see it leaking. If you can squeeze the bulb and it pumps fine out the hose and you get no leaking from the pump, then it's not the same issue I had. That said, you could still have a leak but it may be in a different part of the fuel system like near the injectors. Let me know what you find out and I will ask my boating friends also to see if I can offer suggestions.

    @GrassLogic Рік тому +1

    The question you didn't answer is why the fuel in the oil made your motor stall. Presumably the carb was still getting enough gas unless the entire flow was diverting to the crank case (unlikely).

    • @SeidelRanch
      @SeidelRanch  Рік тому +2

      It was not pumping the fuel into the fuel injection pump. Basically the fuel pump suction was not working because the membrane was cracked and not allowing the pressure to build in the fuel system. The gas was mainly getting into the crank case from me manually pumping the bulb in the fuel line and since there was a crack in the pump it was just pouring it into the crank case.

      I don't think it's that big of a deal as long as you don't keep running it that way. Basically it thins out the oil and reduces lubrication in the engine. I did not see any issues from it other than the pump itself. Many people flush their oil systems by putting gas in the oil to thin it, run it for a few minutes then drain it. I don't recommend that, but it's been done.
