  • Undoubtedly Epcot's most popular demolished attraction, Horizons was a omnimover dark-ride housed in it's future world section. Despite it's late 90's closure, Horizons remains a favorite amongst Epcot enthusiasts.

I worked at Test Track in 1999-2000. Back then we used to have to take turns on third shift to operate the attraction overnight while the techs did brake checks and other maintenance stuff (I have no idea if they still do this). I remember one night me and another guy (Patrick-something, don't remember) were called over to Horizons to assist with something. When we got there, they gave us a radio and took us to the loading area. They'd removed a section of ride vehicles, making an opening that was slightly wider than each show scene. Patrick and I were to walk along with this opening of missing ride vehicles as they advanced the vehicles through the attraction, and radio back to them each time the opening was lined up properly with each show scene. They were making notes on each location so that the following week, when they were to begin removing animatronics and set pieces, they would know exactly how to line up the opening so the pieces could be removed through the gap in the ride vehicles.
This probably doesn't sound too exciting, but it was! I feel like I was one of the very last people to ever see the inside of Horizons before it was dismantled and demolished. It feels like an honor, really. It's also kind of sad. It was strange seeing all those animatronics frozen in time... in the same positions they'd been in since the last time that e-stop was pressed.

The whole ‘world expo and vision of the future’ thing may have worked back in the early 80s but compare it to the other parks at Disney World and it’s imo very outdated which is why I totally understand why they are replacing older and almost non working attractions with stuff like universe of energy being replaced by guardians of the galaxy cosmic rewind (can’t wait for that it’s gonna be awesome I just hope that James Gunn is involved) and world of motion being replaced by test track

Mission Space is so important to me, I had my best memories there as a kid. My dad worked at HP, and on the side of the ride theres an area where you can show your HP badge and enter through a door. This was a cool, air conditioned space where you could get free drinks, watch TV on bean bag chairs, and watch people in the line from a large one-sided window. We used to go through there all the time, and the lady working there was really nice. Pretty sweet job if you ask me. We were always the only ones there and it was nice to take a break from the heat and walking all day. We've been to Epcot numerous times, even when there was no color option. Anyways, it was cool seeing the background of this ride that...kinda really means a lot to me! Ty!

Just want to say thank you for taking the time to make such quality videos AND narrating them, instead of using text to speech like soooo many other channels are doing!
My dad worked as a security officer for Disneyworld back in the mid 80s, he did this for just over 5 years. While I was in the Army and visited him on leave, he talked to his boss and I got to go to work with him one night, (he worked graveyard). It was around Christmas so I got to watch the "behind the scenes" of the workers decorating the park! THAT WAS COOL!! Not EVERYONE can say THAT!
Anyway, it's kind of reminiscent watching these videos. My dad passed in 2008, so it hits home for me.Glad I subscribed to keep that memory alive. Keep the great videos coming!! I'll keep watching!

I honestly wish that I could've experienced Horizons when it was still open. Seriously, I was only 6 months old when it permanently closed. The perception of the future seemed like a very interesting concept and I can see why so many people adored it. Alas, I was never able to experience it. Owning a piece of the old ride would make up for it (but that is practically impossible of owning a part of a Disney ride).

I found out an old album full of pictures of me with my parents at WDW when I was just 3 years old, so really I remember nothing of that trip. In that album there are pictures of us at EPCOT with the date 1997 written on the back, so knowing Horizons closed on 1999 after it's reopening, there was a pretty big chance I went on it with my parents back then! They told me they were pretty sure we did went on it, my mom even remembered the music when I showed it to her.
I of course remember nothing of that, but just knowing I got to experience Horizons in my life (even without being aware of it) makes me incredibly happy.

Horizons was one of those rides I rode once during college and didn't the next few visits because it was an opening day attraction and so naturally it would always be there for me to ride during a future visit! I've been going to Disney since 1963. To soften that loss, I JUST happened to be in Anaheim the year Rocket Rods was operating. All of twelve months. It really sucked but I'm so glad I was one of the lucky ones to see how design by committee was starting to have a detrimental effect on attraction quality. They got into a self defeating race of needing to build the most expensive attraction ever. Or try to pull off a cheaper remodel. Again and again. At the other end, they spent tens of millions on the Yeti animatronic in the Expedition Everest (which was soon permanently broken) for a split second appearance as the train zips past at the climax. OR the extra years added to Seven Dwarves construction costs to control the mechanical rocking mine cars. It is a barely notifiable effect. Can't wait for Tron & Cosmic Rewind!!

Hey! Thanks again for an awesome series!
I wanted to point out a couple things you mentioned:
The Horizons ride vehicle you found in the warehouse photos was actually being sold from Mouse Surplus for $10K. They even had it rigged with the ride audio; it eventually sold.
You mentioned the animatronics being recycled in various attractions; there's a couple I believe you can find at the moment:
In the Haunted Mansion, there's the tiny Leota at the end of the ride. It's possible it may have been replaced with the figure of the girl in the hologram; her hands now ave a flesh color, and were once white/translucent [the same figure was supposedly used for both originally].
I haven't been able to confirm it, but I'm fairly certain that the female scientist with the afro in the computer scene of Spaceship Earth was the one who was piloting the personal suit in the space scene [same stance, and I believe it has at least the same face].

Horizons and Maelstrom. Two of my fav rides at Epcot. And I know they were a fav to so many, they have a cult following. I would personally buy a ride prop from Maelstrom

I really liked the original Horizons ride and was disappointed to see it had been replaced when I went there last year. It was one of the best parts of Epcot when I was a kid, along with Spaceship Earth. In fact, I think the whole place was a worse product than it was when I was first there. On the first trip there, I distinctly remember some of the ride conductors talking about the concept that Disney had had and while they hadn't exactly done as he intended, they were doing things like hydroponic plants and various scientific experiments to help the future of humanity. The only thing I remember liking more on my recent trip was the interjection of Martin Short into the Canada 360 degree movie. Great video.

Great vids! Did you know the three endings from Horizons were used in the post-show of Tokyo's Star Tours, as other planetary destinations offered by the company? They were shown on a screen called TourScan, if memory serves, and were introduced by the awesomely-named Dan Android.

Well done, my good sir! Keep it up!
Tossing some other ideas your way, you could talk about the history of the Disneyland Submarine Voyage, its lengthy closure, and then changes made to it that became the Finding Nemo submarine voyage.
You could build off of that (separate video, I imagine) about the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Submarine Voyage at the WDW Magic Kingdom that was closed in the 90s (sad times, I only rode it once and I was maybe around 5 or 6 years old when I rode it before it closed), and they demolished it to eventually become the Dwarves Minecart coaster.

I went to WDW with my parents a couple of years back and I remember them telling me about Horizons. When we went to Mission: Space my dad said it was better than Horizons but my mom didn't like it at all so I guess it's all about preference. Anyways, love your videos. I hope to see more from you soon.

Mission: Space recently went under for refurb and came back with entirely new footage, so it's probably not going to close any time soon. The post-ride games are cool, though :v

I'd love to hear about Captain EO. And you have a lot of material in Universal studios. I went to Universal for the first time in 1991 and the last time in 2009 and the only 2 attractions that had not changed were the Spielberg ones. E.T. & Jaws. I remember them all.

Man I really loved this video. EPCOT is one of my favorite parks due to the combo of world culture and 'a vision of the future'. Really neat background in Horizons as I've been to Disney uncountable times (especially growing up) but I don't remember much about Horizons. I remember it, but not like other rides that still stand out vividly in my imagination (Skyway in the Magic Kingdom anyone?).

Oh, how I miss Horizons. It was a really cool ride, IMHO. Understand that I love the idea of _being_ in the future (a reason I liked the original Living Seas) and this ride gave me that. I wanted to walk those sets SOOOO bad. 🙂 It was sad to see all of the mechanics get unrepaired over time. That being said, I did notice the attendance going way down toward the end of its life (it seems to have had a small but loyal following; kind of like _Star Trek_ in the 60's). I don't know how much of that can be attributed to people not being impressed with the ride itself and how much to the state of disrepair.
Now I'm a child of the 60's (I watched the Apollo 11 Saturn V go up from my patio in Sarasota when I was 5), so I am a big space fan as well as a future fan. While I was VERY sad to see Horizons go, I felt at least that Mission: Space might be a good replacement. I did enjoy the ride when I first tired it out, but (to quote somebody else) "it lost its shiny pretty quickly". I don't even go on that ride anymore; though I do go in through the exit to play the space race game after the ride...that thing is surprisingly FUN!!

What I would give to have been able to visit EPCOT Center in its original form. I feel that World Showcase has held its ground, but storyline changes and lack of repairs in Future World have left it dilapidated. I hope in their mission to include Disney characters into Future World that they return to EPCOT's original sense of wonder.

I was told that originally you could only go the orange track when it was first open. People loved it, but it was too intense for the majority of the people that go to Disney, so they made the green track.

To the maker of this video, there is something that DEFINITELY needs to be edited here. At the very end, 10:07 to be close to exact, you're playing the song from Carousel of Progress. What you should be playing at this part is the music to Horizons. Don't have it? It was on the Disneyland & Walt Disney World album/CD released in the early 90s that I still have to this day.

I see that there have been no recent comments on this video, thought I'd post a recollection of how the Horizons ride affected our family. We took our kids to it around 1988, our daughter was 5 years old at the time. Before entering the ride (I had been on it a few years prior) I posed a question to her -- see how much of the ride you can remember, we'll talk about it afterwards. She really took it to heart and we had a great discussion upon exiting.
This was the first time she had paid such close attention to detail, and was then able to discuss it in a very adult manner. One of the things I asked her before entering was to remember any special smells during the ride. I already knew that the orange grove display pumped orange aroma into the air. I remember her glee when we reached that part of the ride.
Long story short, this was a turning point for her, and us, and is forever cemented in our memories as a good sharing experience.
Trivial? Perhaps. It's sad that the ride met such an ignominious ending, we feel lucky to have seen it in its heyday. They're not making them like this any more.

The symbol for Horizons can still be seen in the Mission:Space gift shop. Go to the register counter and look in between the registers on the front. There it is!
I always thought it was stupid that Walt Disney attractions "needed" a sponsor in the first place. Don't ticket sales bring in enough to build and improve these things? Isn't that how a business is supposed to work? Maybe for the initial building of the attraction, yeah. But from then on out it should be self sustaining.
