You forgot about the weird tie in with McDonald's during that time, where Disney and McDonald's joined together to celebrate the millennium by recruiting 2000 children from around the world to a global youth summit in conjunction with the United Nations. I was one of those 2000 children and that whole event was nothing short of crazy amazing. The event was called Millenium Dreamers. Feel free to look it up and reach out to me if you need more details on it.

Thanks for the reminder, I came across that while doing research for this video but I'm thinking about making a separate video detailing McDonalds' relationship with the Disney parks. (Fry stand at Magic Kingdom, Dinoland USA, Millennium Dreamers)

@@ThemeParksShouldntExist You'll need to talk about the problems with the movie tie-in contract (which left McDonald's having to promote a bunch of flops).

@@taffysaur It was sponsored by McDonald's until about 2008. Every attraction in the area had the McDonald's logo presented as a sponsor, and Restaurantosaurus (the main place to get food in a rather large area of the park) served McDonald's burgers, fries, and chicken nuggets. 2000-2008 was definitely a weird time to be a Disney fan.

I was part of the opening cast of Tapestry of Nations! I was a Sprite! Many of those puppets were HEAVY. After a year, I had some back issues. It was really hard to handle them in the wind and often many of the puppets would get caught in the trees too. Ahhh I miss those days. It was such a great experience. The best thing about it this time period is it was before smartphones, so people paid attention lol

I worked in the U.K. Pavilion and remember the Sprites! I loved being on parade duty /crowd control with a light saber. I just used to dance the whole time. I also remember the wind issues especially on the bridge by France.

You can't just show me those big dumb puppets and play that gibberish song and expect me not to CRY UGLY TEARS. That parade is still one of my happiest childhood memories. I was heartbroken when they canceled it. Now I'm reliving the heartbreak watching IllumiNations end.

What was nice about Leave A Legacy is that my kids were 2 and 6 when we had their picture etched on the wall in 2000 and it’s been a very nice way to show time passing each time we’ve visited; they’ll be 21 and 25 when we visit later this year

Illuminations: Reflections of Earth is easily the greatest nighttime show I have ever seen, even beating out Happily Ever After, World of Color, and Disneyland’s Fantasmic. No wonder it stayed for so long, and quite frankly, I would like it to stick around even longer.
No other piece of theme park entertainment has resonated on such an emotional level. While other shows feel like they go through the motions, Illuminations, it’s brilliant pacing, and powerful score just give me goosebumps every single time.
The next shows will have some mighty big shoes to fill because Illuminations is nothing short of a masterpiece.

The moment I saw the giant magic wand and the 2000 number over the sphere, I instantly knew that that was exactly how I thought of "Disney aesthetic." I would've been a little kid, under 10yrs old, and my mom was obsessed with Disney (still is) and had all these magazines with the picture on it, and I think my first Disney trip was around that time frame. So to me, it always looked like that, and to hear that it was controversial is a little funny.

My family was devastated when Disney announced they were axing Reflections of Earth. We love Epcot and that show had a DEEP sentimental value to us, having seen it probably well over 100 times in its 20 year run. I'm glad we at least knew during our recent trip in January/February 2019 that it would be the last time we'd see it, so we knew to savor it. My mother and I legitimately cried the last time we watched it because we KNEW it was going to be the last time. I mean, the show started when I was 15 and I'm 34 now. That's a long time for a staple like that to take root in a person.
Edit now that I finished the video: OHH I am ALL OVER that Keep Epcot Weird shirt!!!

The one thing I was always surprised didn't stay around post-celebration was the Millenium Village. I assume it had to do with the contracts Disney had with each nation, but it added just enough to World Showcase that it did seem a genuine shame that it closed fairly soon after the celebration year ended. I have hazy memories of being able to get in there once and do Sweden's weird seasonal eggs (which had some nice effects as I recall) and Scotland's Mini Golf. I do remember the pavillion feeling crowded, even with limited numbers allowed in.

Tapestry of Nations was one of the best parades WDW ever had. One thing everyone seems to skip when talking about pin trading starting during the millennium celebration was that each month had a design and to make that design, you had to buy a pin for every day of the month. I have the pin for my birthday around somewhere. One day I'll find it and post it online.
I also LOVED the millennium village. I only vaguely remember it (I would have been about 10 at the time) but I remember enjoying the mini-golf and all the shops. To this day, I always get really excited any time I go to an event that's in World Showplace.
Forever sad I never got around to doing the Leave a Legacy, regardless of how dislike the tombstones are now.
Can't wait for the rest of the series!

Yes, they were photomosaic pins that all linked together to create an image of one of the World Showcase pavilions, one country per month, one piece per day, and the mosaic was made from shots of a movie set in that region of the world. They cancelled it a few months in.
Back then I was friends with the main Aladdin in Epcot, and since we both loved the movie he always kept an eye out for merch that he'd pick up for me and ship out to me a few times a year. The mosaic for Morocco was made from shots from Aladdin, and since the whole mosaic thing had been cancelled before they ever released Morocco, all of the pins ended up in the Cast Member discount store for *25¢ each*. He picked up a full set for himself and a set for me, and I used a connection with a framing shop to get his set framed along with mine in return for him getting the pins in the first place. My framed set is still in my bedroom along with all of the rest of my Aladdin collection. :D
I was 15 when the Millennium Celebration happened and I'll never forget it. It was fantastic. We have two Leave a Legacy squares, one from the actual Millennium Celebration in 1999 and another from when I graduated from college in 2007. We finally looked them up again just this past January.

I wanna see a different parade at Epcot called “World of Dreams” which celebrates world cultures, dreams, and unity with floats representing different nations with different Disney characters for the different nations their respective stories take place in!

I went to Disneyworld for the first time in either 2000 or 2001 and this seems vaguely familiar. I was in 6th grade and went with my family. I think I saw those puppets and thought they were sophisticated and neat.

I think I've seen this in on old Disneyworld promo videos they use to show, and is it me or does the Millenium Village segment's music sound like something from The Lion King?

It is physically impossible for me to hear the score to Illuminations at even low volume and not immediately start crying. that doesn’t have anything to do with it retiring this year. It just really is that moving a score.

I wish they would have kept the Millennium Village around, just updated from time to time. I went in there once or twice, so I only have vague memories of a few elements, like the Israel simulator ride and some of the souvenir stands. For years, I wasn't even sure if it was real, or if I'd imagined all that stuff.

This was my very first trip to Disney World while the celebration was running in 2001. I've remembered seeing the wand beside Spaceship Earth even though some of you might think it was a dumb idea I always loved it. I'm not sure if I actually went to the Millennium Village back but finally I got to see footage from the inside. Leave a Legacy I definitely remember the most I've always wanted to go back and find the picture that is until now the right side of the sculptures have already been taken down containing my picture but I'll find again in their new location after the overhaul.

As a dvc kid born at the millennia and a long time Epcot fan, it’s hard to believe that many of these are gone/soon to be gone. I hated the wand but i will he sad to see illuminations and leave a legacy go. IMO illuminations is one of the best fireworks shows of all time at any disney park
