Wooly weighs 87kg/192lb and is 6'1"/187cm tall
Wooly is riding a 6'1" x 20" x 2 5/8" - 34.4L
Wooly is super excited to get back in the water after injury and try the new Xero from JS - he rides by the HYFI 2.0 and the standard PU version of the model in the same DIM's.
Heres what JS had to say........
Our new gold standard of all-rounders, the Xero came together by fusing elements of the most popular current models together, just like the Monsta Box. JS focussed on the strengths of our three clear global favourites over the past decade, and tested combinations along with fresh ideas endlessly alongside the Traktor Team to find the ultimate everyday shortboard. Built to blow minds in all conditions - especially weaker, flatter faced waves.
Where did we land? On the Blak Box rocker, Monsta Box rail & concaves, with a Monsta outline. Incredibly fast, this rocker fits into a huge range of waves, and provides even more drive than the Monsta Box. It's flat enough to fly in anything but has just enough curve to be pushed hard when combined with the Monsta's clean, performance outline, which flows into a slight hip that provides intuitive, instant direction changes. And similar to the Monsta Box, single concave under front foot runs into a double through the fins to give you extra lift yet maintain control in more critical sections.
We recommend riding the same dimensions as your Monsta Box 2020, or in EasyRider dims, closer to your Blak Box 3

How many changes can they really do though are they just the same board rebranded and slightly changed
Hi mate. It is quite a bit different to the Monsta Box when riding it, very different to a Blak Box. It’s always nice to get a little update on an old fav 🤙

I have a monsta 2020, looking for a groveller now (even though the m2020 grovells somewhat okay)
The Happy Everyday went better when it was slightly bigger, I would say that under shoulder high the Xero would win, over shoulder high then the Happy Everyday wins.
Hi... I have the Xero 5'10 28.4 liters. I love the board! I would like to buy a new board to use in smaller and weaker conditions... Would the Xero Easy Rider be a good option? 5’8…?
You could do that or you could go for more of a grovel board like the Sub Xero. I just did a review on that one if you want to check it out.
@Wolly TV would you choose the happy every day or the JS xero in easy ride dims as a performance Groveller?
Thats a really hard one. They are really similar to ride. I think if the waves were under shoulder high, I would choose the Xero.
Heya Wolly, Xero or the Flat Earth? Do you still surf the flat earth like it is a favourite or have you moved on? How do you think the Xero would go in the shorter wider package of the Easy Rider dims? Cheers
Hi mate, I havent ridden any boards of late as Ive been injured! FE is an amazing board and I found it to be best in shoulder - head high waves that had flat sections and step sections. The Xero was better in smaller surf hat the FE. FE would have a bigger upper end range. Hope that helps

Niice review. How would you compare this to the pyzalien 2. Have had one for the last year and really enjoy it in most conditions especially when the surf is overhead n punchy as you can push it really hard and it holds , its very responsive and feels lively under your feet and its not to bad in the slop. She’s pretty beat up now though. So it’s either another pyzalien or trying the Xero out. Would you say the Xero still performs well in good surf but is a bit better in average conditions. I just love how good the pyzalien goes. But you did make the zero look very appealing. Damn you 🤣

Yeah you nail it there. I found the Pyzalien was really good in punchy waves above shoulder high. I feel like the Xero would definitely out surf it in waist to head high and then it would be an arm wrest once it gets over head. The other thing is that I reviewed the Pyzalien quite a while back so I would suggest you watch both and compare how it looks for me.

I have a Blak Box3 and a Monsta Box 2020- really love the BB3. Which board would this replace or do think it replaces both?
It probably replaces the Monsta Box but if you did need to replace the BB you could get it in the easy rider DIMs. As standard DIMs it’s closer to the Monsta Box.

The JS Xero Gravity is probably closer to the CI Happy Everyday and I liked both of them but I think the JS wins.
I've decided on going for the Xero Hyfi 2.0.
I weigh 60kg and Intermediate+ surfer. Do you think that the 5'6" 23L would be good or should I go up to 5'7" 24.2L?

Really depends what you're used to riding? For me, I always go up a touch in weaker waves.
Just wondering why a bloke of your weight is using medium fins in these boards?

I sometimes use large fins if I find a board like this too loose but most performance boards I start with mediums.
I have a basic rule that I stick by and it seems to work for me
Small grovel boards - large fins
Performance boards - mediums
Step ups - medium and even small stuff fins.
The more fin you have the more drag you have - slower.
When you have wide tail grovel boards you need the larger fins to help generate speed as you pump your board but when you are riding step ups the wave has power and you have a straighter outline so you can ride smaller fins and let the tail hold you in.

I had this board for a few weeks I found it started to have yellow patches everywhere.
I would go back to your retailer that you got it from, mine is still very white. The HYFI's usually stay white for a long time so this sounds like you will need to follow up on it. Good luck
Hey Wooly I'd like to give a go to this board. I'm currently on a twinsman album 5'10 34,4L. Intermediate level. Would you recommend keeping the same dims and volume for the xero ?

Yes I would stick to a similar volume. You could come down a little bit as the Xero would be longer.

@@WoolyTV even more so, you’re making me want to try bigger boards. That extra volume looks all around better under you. I think many of us have taken the shorter boards to an extreme and might be best served by adding back a bit extra.

Hey Wooly. I really enjoyed this review. Unless I missed it, does the HYFI give more float when paddling than the PU? I am considering the Inferno 72 and the XERO. Do you have any thoughts on those 2 boards in comparison? Thanks and Cheers!
Hi mate. I always use the same volume in PU and EPS boards. I there is any difference in buoyancy I can’t tell. I have never ridden an Inferno 72 so I’m not much help there. 🤙
Hi Wooly. This board looks really fun. I bought the Sub Xero Hifi and it paddles into waves super well. Does the Xero paddle well? Also, I’m stuck between getting the standard dims and easy rider. I’m about 6 ft and advanced, but also advancing in age (48)! I think I’d definitely get the Hifi. Any recommendations on regular vs easy rider?

Just depends on what length and volume you want to go.
For me the easy rider DIMs make it a bit short. Yes it does paddle well for its volume/length 🤙

I'm currently riding a sharpeye 5'8 31l and pyzellian 31.5L do you think I can ride this board at 5'9 30.5 L? I'm intermediate low level just mastering turns. I'm 45-47kgs and 152cms a weak paddler, thinking of getting a PE
If those board you mentioned as good for you then dropping 1/2 L won’t be a problem.
If you miss waves when you paddle for them, then that’s a sign you should increase your volume.
@@WoolyTV I catch lots of wave with my boards. Just a bit weary as it's PE and I haven't ridden PE before. I'm based in NZ

I’m having trouble deciding between a Hyfi 2.0 sub xero and a hyfi 2.0 Xero.
I’m in Coffs and pretty much surf whatever waves we get 0 foot or 8ft. What do you recommend

The Sun Xero will be good in real grovel and the Xero or Xero Gravity will do you from waist high to over head.
If it was me I would go for the Xero or Xero Gravity.

My question is , I was looking at the xero gravity, im looking at getting to intermediate level, and was thinking of getting a biard 6'6 ( maybe 6'6) i like 22 " wide and around 38-40 L. Would this be ok to push me from beginner to intermediate.

Xero for sure UNLESS you live somewhere with punchy waves then the Monsta would come into play.

Xero paddles similar to a Monsta Box. If you like the PU Monsta Box I would go the same volume.

Quick question: I'm 182 cm and about 78 kgs. Currently I'm on a 6'0 x 20 1/2 x 2 3/4 with 36liters (intermediate level surfer) so its quick a fat one :) I would like to take the volume down a bit because I feel like its hindering my progression at that point.
Having the chance to get the zero second hand in 5'10 x 19 3/4 x 2 5/8 (easy rider) with 32,4 liters. Do you think thats a good option for an everyday board?

That’s a big jump down from 6’0” 36L. Could you surf a 5’10”? The short answer is yes but really depends on your paddling, fitness and ability.

I would say im quiet fit but yeah don't want to jump down too fast so that its only gonna be frustrating..
@@JulianBars in theory you should be able to ride the 5’10” 32.4L but it just depends on all the factors I mentioned. I’m 87kg and can ride 33L boards so that should give you something to work with.

Hi mate, I have only had 1 quick surf on the Sub Xero. Feels like its will be good in waist high to shoulder high waves as a groveller.
Thanks for doing this review! I’m super torn between getting a 6’0 JS Xero or a 6’0 Chili hot knife. I was leaning toward getting a Xero in PU but I heard it needs a bit more of powerful wave. Not a big fan of EPS so do you feel like there’s enough foam in the front for paddle power and enough foam under the back foot to carry speed? For reference I surf 1-5 foot Southern California jetty beach breaks that aren’t too powerful.

Yes I do BUT in the type of waves you want to surf the board in I think the HYFI would be better. Have you ever tried a HYFI construction before? The surf very differently to a lot of sandwich style EPS boards. I feel like they have all the positives of a PU but with a lot more zing in smaller surf.
Hot knife still needs a wave with push, id say this would be better on the lower end
Hey wool what would you choose for an every day driver that could possibly handle some bigger surf if needed ? Xero or Monsta easy rider possibly ? Had a bb3 in 6,2 and loved it but sold it
I would probably look at the new Xero Gravity. It’s very similar to the old MonstaBox.
That will handle better in slightly bigger surf but will still grovel. 🤙

Great review! I have the exact same 6'1 Xero in hyfi, just haven't ridden it yet. Were you using FCS II Performer PC Carbon? Prob large?

The HYFI one had the Performer PCC mediums. The PU was the Futures Legacy Neutral medium. 🤙
@@WoolyTV why do you ride mediums? With your weight at 192 lbs I'd think you would want large. I'm new to the fin game and trying to learn. Thx
I’m 200 pounds and use mostly mediums as well. To me it seems that if you’ve developed good technique you drive off the rail more so than the fins. So you get plenty of hold and drive out of the board and need less fin to compensate. The benefit is a more lively feeling faster board. The drawback for some is that extra pivot and liveliness can feel too squirmy and loose for some people and they prefer a larger fin to calm the board down. Also seems to play into whether the surfer is front or back foot dominant in their approach. Frontfooters tend to drive more off the rail and turns are more of a finesse deal whereas backfooters drive more off the fins and get the pivot for tight turns by simply overpowering the fins.
Moral of the story, just because you’re a bigger guy don’t assume that smaller fins aren’t worth trying. They can wake up boards that seem like duds. They can also take good boards and make them feel electric.
Lastly, the wave type plays into it. Faster and more powerful waves actually require less fin area than weaker flat faced waves.

The other things to think about are tail shape and fin construction.
If a board has a super wide tail then I like to ride larger fins, a narrow pin tail then I ride small fins as the tail is doing even more of the work.
If a fin is solid glass or carbon then you can generally ride them a touch smaller to say a foam filled fin. 🤙
which do you prefer: Xero or MonstaBox? Could you compare them?
Both very good boards, the Xero is a little flatter in the rocker than the Monsta Box. Stay tuned as there is a new Xero - Gravity coming out soon which is very close to the original Monsta Box.

I think the Xero is a touch more versatile than the Monsta Box. I like the way it feels in the pocket. Probably best to grab the Xero 🤙

That board seems to work for u. What would you call the wave range for this JS says 0-4, watching this it looks like more like a 2-6ft with the right fins.

Hi mate, it has a very flat rocker so seems to work best in smaller/flatter waves. Really depends on how your wave scale is. Would it work in head high surf, yes. Is it the perfect board for 6' Ulu, probably not.

So the xero gravity is a better board or the xero better for smaller weaker waves as its a bit flatter rocker?
The Xero wins in small waves, over should high the Gravity starts to come into its own. They have updated the Xero to be even better in small waves.

@@MrRobinski when the Xero Gravity was introduced the Xero was changed slightly. They have changed the DIMs so they have more volume and will work better in smaller waves.

Im sure you could if you like the feel of the 2 + 1 but Ive never tried that combo.

I think it's a good idea to ride your 'step down' with a touch more volume. How did it go for you?
It's going perfect but I don't think I would be bad because it would be more knife for the rail
Can’t tell you’re back from injury, ripping! Does it have anything in common with the Air 17X? Loved that board for everyday versatility.
Yes a little like the Air 17X under foot but probably closer to the Monsta Box. I find that the Air 17X worked better for me when the waves were a bit bigger, the Monsta Box was better in the smaller stuff.
What level of surfing do you think you need to be to ride and get the best out of the board?
And what other fins would you recommend

If your intermediate then just go up in volume. I usually use medium fins, Futures neutral or FCS Performer.

What did you like better this new Xero Or the dominator II?
I think the Xero was better for me. The Dom went really well in the smaller stuff but I think the Xero has a larger wave range.
