- JS Xero Gravity - WOOLY TV #37 - Surfboard Review
Is this really going to be better than the Monsta Box and take out the best daily driver for 2023?
Wooly weighs 87kg/192lb and is 6'1"/187cm tall
Wooly is riding a 6'1" x 20" x 2 9/16" - 33.6L and the 6'1" x 20" x 2 5/8" - 34.5L.
From JS
OUR PERFORMANCE ALL-ROUNDER. NEXT IN LINE OF OUR FAVOURITE FUSIONS EVER.
Xero Gravity is the next in line of our favourite fusions ever. Ridden the same dimensions as your Monsta Box, with the same magic rocker, this will be your all-rounder even more geared to high performance surfing than the updated Xero, which in comparison has the slightly flatter Blak Box rocker and a fuller outline. Xero Gravity also features a similar foil to the previous Xero, with foam hidden in the deck, but a slightly pulled down rail that’s fine tuned for manoeuvrability & quick response.
We’ve streamlined the range while keeping all the nuance and specialised qualities you want to have a board model for every type of wave. Want a super groveller? That’s the Sub Xero. A more performance-oriented option to handle flatter conditions? That’s the new Xero, now even closer to your original Blak Box. And for a performance all-rounder - that’s right here, the Xero Gravity.
It’s our direct update on the board that won QS and CT events in the type of conditions we all surf every day. And it was voted the Australian board of the year back-to-back, due to overdelivering in countless sessions for regular surfers in average to pumping waves. If the Monsta Box made you enjoy surfing more, Xero Gravity will send you to the moon.

Surfing better than ever before. What comeback from the injury
🤙🙏🤙. I’m getting stronger every surf.
Fantastic review mate! Helped me decide between the CI Happy every day and this one.
What's your opinion PU vs HYFI for this? I'm new to epoxy boards, but heard good things.
I have my monstabox2020 on ice! Its hard to let go of that Monsta DNA, but its good to know that board it has a spiritual successor
Yeah I kept an old one too! Grab one of these and make sure it goes better than the old one before you sell it. Going off my comparison you will prefer the Xero Gravity 🤙
Great work Wooly, love your reviews. Ripping as usual 🤙
Thanks 🙏
You've always been a JS fanboy, but this time DAMN you looked good on it and the outline in shape through my eyes are on point bigtime!!!!!! Shredding anybody???? Great walkthrough and review old boy lol.....
Thanks mate. Yes I’m not hiding I have a great relationship with most of the JS boards but I have had some great Pyzels, CI’s, DHD and I couple of FireWires that have worked really well for me too. Doesn’t matter what label is on this one it goes great 🤙. Not to forget that the boys at JS have been super supportive of Wooly TV from the very first episode 🙏
Quality review as always. Great surfing too. Doesn’t looks like your injury spell has left a long term gloom on your performance.
Thanks mate! I’m not quiet the same as I was prior but I’m mending!
Thanks Wooly from Florida. Love your reviews! Excited to give this board a try.
Thanks mate! It’s a cracker of a board 🤙
I have the same board, but what really improved the performance was the RIKT I put on it. I was able to pull off power carves to a new level.
Excuse my ignorance but what is RIKT?
Great video and great surfing! How do you compare de Xero Gravity vs CI happy everyday? Cheers from PT
Hi mate
They are really similar boards that work in similar conditions. Really comes down to what you like. If you like the feel of CI boards (OG Flyer, Rocket Wide) go the HE. If you are more of a JS guy then grab the Gravity. I didn’t ride them on the same day in the same conditions so I can’t give them a true surf off but when I watch the footage I would say the JS comes first!
Awesome review and new subscriber here. About to pull the trigger on a Xero Gravity in HYFI 3.0. Wooly, do you have any feedback on HYFI construction in terms of it getting pressure dents easily or buckling? My last board in this category was a stringerless epoxy DHD and it didn’t get pressures but it recently snapped on me and not in very big conditions l. So I’m hesitant to get another stringerless board and I don’t like PUs. Thanks.
Hi mate
The HYFI 3 will dent like the DHD would, I have heal and toe dents in mine but nothing crazy. I havent buckled any of my HYFI 2 or 3 boards ever, not saying it cant happen but Ive never done it. I would think that the full carbon bottom on the HYFI 3 will make them even less likely to buckle.
Hey mate, great review! I’m looking to get this board my usual litres are around 34L (80kg, 6 foot). I usually like shorties around 5’11-6’0, should I get the 6’1 @ 33.6L or order the 6’0 easy rider at 34.6L? If I get the 6’1 will the extra inch in length affect anything?
Cheers
If you usually ride 6’0” boards go the easy rider DIMs. I prefer the standard DIMs but I’m 6’1 1/2”
Hey Wooly,
Ripping.
Do you have the inferno 72 or DHD Utopia in the mix?
Might replace my Air 17x with the Xero Gravity. Cheers
Hi mate
Don’t have either of those in the stack at the moment.
I’m a fan of the Air 17X and the Xero Gravity.
How does this compare to the CI Happy Everyday? Im the market for a waist-to-overhead board. Both your reviews for each respective board have been good.
Hi mate
There are both really good for that wave range. I don’t think you could go wrong with either.
For me the Xero Gravity gets the nod or the HE…..just.
@@WoolyTV thanks man! Love your videos keep up the good work
How is it compared to the og flyer ?
Hi mate, sorry Ive never ridden an OG flyer
Hey wooly if you had fo pick out of this or the happy everyday what you going fir and what were the main feeling differences you felt cheers
@@Undergroundffn I prefer the XG over the HE but I did really like the HE. The HE is shorter for the same volume as the XG.
I ride a 6’1” XG but rode a 6’0” HE and could have even ridden the 5’11”. So it probably comes down to how tall you are and which one suits your length and volume.
Both a great but the XG DIMs suit me better.
Hi Wooly. Why did you choose a large when you used the Blackstix for the weaker conditions and was it the neutral Blackstix?
I really like to use the P8 Legacy Pivot in my xero gravity as I‘m 93kg. How do they compare to the F8 Blackstix?
Cheers Mate!
Hi mate, I seem to go to a large when Im using Blackstix and yes it was a neutral F8. I havent used the Pivots on that board.
Hi Wooly… I have the original Xero 5’10 with 29.2 liters and the Xero Fusion 5’9 with 29.9l. I would like to buy a Xero Gravity 5’11… but the smallest volume is 30.2 liters. Do you think I will feel excess volume?
I think you will be fine, I jump around a litre in volume all the time and barely notice it!
Hey legend,
Ive had an air 17x and a Monsta2020. Unreal boards. I was looking to get a Pyzel red tiger for everyday beachies (simply to just have a different feel) since ive always been on JS’s. However, this video makes it hard to go past the xero gravity.
I liked both the Air17X and the Monsta 2020. The Xero Gravity sits in the middle of those two but closer to the Air17X. If I could only choose one board, it would be a Xero Gravity.
This board definitely like you. Fallen down the woolly TV rabbit hole again over Xmas/NY. Trying to decide btw Monsta 10ER, ZG and Xero, to be the 3rd board for the 2024 travel quiver to sit btw the wooly approved 6,3 Twin pin and 5.10 Black Baron for Maldives and Bali. Leaning toward the 6.1 ZG in higher vol. what ya reckon?
Hi mate,
Really depends on what size and type of waves you want it to perform in?
Head high and above good quality then look at the Monsta 10. If you want it to work in a wider variety of waves then jump on the Xero Gravity. If I was to own one surfboard and have to make that one board work for me in all conditions, it would be the Xero Gravity.
Best surfing I've seen you do on any board...
Thanks 🙏
love the reviews Wool . I got a great white twin what do you think of that and the xero gravity PU as a 2 board quiver in average to good NZ waves?? too much overlap??
Not really, very different feels. I actually preferred the GW in head high plus waves where as the XG I can ride from waist high and up to overhead.
Hi Wooly. Great video as usual. Which fins would you suggest for this board if I have it in fcs2?
Thanks mate
Keep ripping🔪🌊💦
I’m a standard Performer type of guy. Mediums for me in a board like this
Great review as always. I revisited this as it looks like JS have released this badboy in the CarboTune.
Is there any scope for you to do a review in the CarboTune layup it would be awesome to know how they compare.
Looking to replace my Aipa Dark Twinn in Dual Core construction in another 12-18 months and the Xero Gravity looks the goods.
Hi mate
Yes I now have the Carbotune version. If you jump on my Instagram I have just posted up a small clip on it.
Hey Wooly love the channel. I’m looking to replace my rocket wide and was considering the xero gravity or bullseye. How would you compare the 2 models. I have a sub xero which I can’t get off of and a raging bull same story.
Rocket Wide will have more volume unless you go for the Xero Gravity in the Easy Rider DIMs. That would be my pick over the Bullseye but they will both do the job 🤙
Hi Wooly
How would this board go as a round tail? Would you surf it on a wave like 6 foot (face) Keramas?
Thanks Ricky
They are now making them as a round tail and yes that would be perfect for head high Keramas.
Great vid! I've been out of the JS loop for a while. Is this the heir to the Black Box? I had a black box or black box 2 years ago and never surfed better than i did on that board.
Hi mate
This one replaces the Monsta Box.
The closest one to the Blak Box is the new Xero Fusion. I haven’t reviewed this one as yet.
Many many thanks. Guess I'll be buying one ASAP@@WoolyTV
Great surfing, I was looking at one of these for an indo trip in September, most of my boards are in the 43/44 range in pu . I’m in the middle of the sizes I can get either 42.5 liter or 45.7 liter not sure whether I should go up or down. I’m 106kg
Thanks mate. I’m in the opinion that up is always the answer but it really depends how your current board feels.
Hey Wooly, i got a monstabox 2020 in my quiver. Is it worth the upgrade? Thanks mate
In my opinion this one out performs the Monsta Box. So yes from me 🤙
heard much about ci pro? and if its crazy hard to surf im thinking of getting one for indo but kinda scared because they called it a ci pro lol?
Hi mate
I have one on order to review.
The CI 2 Pro is a little flatter and will be easier to ride.
Your nearly wholely responsible for me buying too many new js boards from beach beat up here on the sunny matey love ya reviews from begining to end the info how its delivered verbal visual demonstrational timeing etc etc properly tested with varied weather conditions etc etc and most importantly i feel like its possible if i try hard enough i could obtain a level of surfing close to your level one day ya know. Its hard to relate to a world title holders review of a board (assumeing you didnt win one back in the day (im still newish😂 )
Thanks
Ha ha, make sure you tell the Beach Beat boys that next time you're in there! Don't worry I defiantly never won a world title!
Why didn't you get in eps? Wouldn't it be a board for average waves or smaller?
Hi mate
They didn’t have any in the country we I got my 2. If I was wanting it to surf down into smaller stuff I would definitely go the EPS
Great review, definitely looked good in all conditions as an all rounder. When would you take a Xero out now that you’ve reviewed both of those? I quite like my Xero as an all rounder but wondering if I should trade up to the Gravity for a bit more upper range 🤔
Yeah you could have both boards and use the Xero to grovel on and then the Gravity as it gets slightly better but as you see from the wide range of conditions I rode this in, it could be a one board quiver 🤙
Thanks mate, gunna check one out 👍
@@mexicanolados where ya based?
Sydney, otherwise I’d drop by
@@mexicanolados if you need a hand finding one just let me know and I can point you to a shop close by.
Hey Wooly would you recommend pu or hifi? I have a 3 board quiver with groveller and step up covered. This would need to split the middle. Considering hifi s as I liked my Monsta box in hifi not that I ever had the pu. Cheers
Really depends on what sort of waves you’re surfing the most.
If you will ride it in waves that you will be pumping and needing to generate speed then I would go the HYFI. But if you will be using your grovel board for that then maybe the PU could be the option.
I like both constructions and they both have their place.
I ended up getting a Xero in hifi and may go the gravity in pu. Might ditch the mashup I currently have as I feel the Xero may have it covered
Great review thank you!!!! Quick question, which region do you surf, for me to have an idea, for instance on the Gold region the biggest board that I have is a 6.0, but it would be different if I was in West australia. Thank you again.
I live in Perth WA but spend most of my time in Mandurah. My surf shop and surf school are there and that’s where a lot of my surfing is done. I do mix it up with trips to Margaret River and a few spots further north too. 🤙
Thank you so much!!!! Awesome videos
Hey Wooly how do you think the xero gravity would go with a round tail?
If you like round tails, then it would be a great option. JS used to offer the Monsta Box as a round tail and now the XG has that option.
Like how you test boards in a wide variety of waves. It gives a much better idea how each board performs. The 2 turn combo on the larger day on the left must've felt good. 👍
Yep I try my best to use the boards in a variety of waves they are designed for. Coming back from 6 months injury, just a bottom turn feels good 😂
@@WoolyTV What was your injury Wooly? Have a really bad neck sprain myself right now. Making it hard to surf. Cheers from San Diego :)
@@erics4127 hi mate. I’ve had a few knee troubles over the years but last June I did a 100% rupture of my MCL and that kept me out of the water for 6 months
@@WoolyTV So glad to see you're back in the water. That must have been difficult. Thanks for the reviews!!
Great review. I am looking for something to replace my Bullseye, ive dropped a bit of weight and its feeling like a boat. I am 6' and 88kgs, 43years old and at the mid/low end of intermediate (no massive turns, air or vertical). I usually ride a twinny Black Baron in 6ft 38L (HyFI) when its small which goes well for me. I was looking at the Xero in 6'2 (38/37L) to fill that gap but have seen you're Xero Gravity review. Got to say im still leaning towards the Xero (HyFi) for 2-5ft and anything above then the Raging Bull. Would love your thoughts. Cheers
Hi mate
Sounds like you are on the right track, the Xero sounds like the board for those waves and to sit between a Baron and a Raging Bull ✅
@@WoolyTV Thanks again. How would you compare the CI Happy Everyday to the Xero. In two minds
@@agl5245 the Xero would surf better in smaller waves than the HE. Happy everyday would be better as the waves get slightly bigger but your Raging Bull will cover that.
Just commenting to support ya bruddah 🤙🏽, Aloha from big island
Thanks mate.
Mahalo 🤙
air 17x vs monster box vs xero gravity for performance surfing in everyday waves?
Hi mate
I think the Xero Gravity wins. I liked both the Air 17X and the Monsta Box was my all time favourite but the Xero Gravity feels that little bit better 🤙
@@WoolyTV Cheers Wooly, keep at it🤙
@@joseande9627 🤙🙏
Hi wolly great reviews! I have dominator2 and sci fi 2.0. Is zero gravity much better in all rounder? Thanks
Hi mate
The Xero Gravity will surf better than the Dom in head high surf and bigger and it’s way more predictable than the Sci Fi 🤙
Thanks And what you think about the raging bull vs zero gravity?
@@matlaureux8848 the Raging Bull is higher volume, round tail and will work better in waves over head.
What do you think of those new moulded creatures pads?
Really good. Good feeling underfoot, grippy and better for the environment.
Hi Wooly. Would the Xero gravity easy rider dims be good for my first foray into fibreglass surfboards. I am a beginner and I wanna ditch the foamie for something I can surf everyday and progress. I am 52. Hahahaha... Glenn.
Hi mate
I would probably look at a board with a wider nose outline. If you like the look of the JS boards then I would suggest the
Sub Xero
Flaming Fish
Big Baron
@@WoolyTV thanks Wooly. Glenn
Maybe I could also look at FireWire Too fish. What do you think. Glenn
@@glennsanderson9774 probably not that one for a first board. Look for a standard shape with a nice wide nose.
Its got a very nice outline...went great for ya 😀🤙
Yep feels nice 👍
Always good watching reviews of your new board, I like it too
Thanks 🙏 🤙
The review is awesome and thé level too 👌🤙⚡️
🙏
Love going to to surf and skate in Mandurah
So do I :)
how this board comper to payzelian 2?
I think it has a broader wave range. It’s surfs much better than the P2 in small waves and still surfs well in the same conditions that the P2 excels in. 🤙
@@WoolyTV thanks fior the review..it look like this board need good amount of wave.hard to twist in flat section.but if you say better than p2 in small wave im going to buy one.cheers bro
@@soulsurfer3102 if your looking for something similar but surfs better in the smaller surf, try the Xero. 🤙
@@soulsurfer3102 ua-cam.com/video/e9QTk_827Oo/v-deo.html and maybe try the HYFI tech for more speed in small waves

I’ve been sweating on this review, looks like Xero gravity is in my future
Sorry it took so long 😅. So many boards and so little time. Unfortunately I have a business to run 😂. Would love it to be my full time job 🤙🤙
@@WoolyTV looks like it was worth the wait! Shredding
@@andrewjackson4973 yep is a good one
Does the easy rider dims change the wave size range?
@@andrewjackson4973 not really it just allows you to get more volume without going up in length.
Ok last one 😅how is it compared to the pyzel phantom ?
Will surf better in under head high waves than the Phantom.
@@WoolyTV wooly you are the best man really.. i see you answer every question your audience have and this is why i feel we like keep coming back to your videos as well as the great content! Keep it up 💪🏼✅
Another great review ! Plan to surf the new JS El Baron ?
Thanks 🙏
I haven’t got one yet so I will add it to the list. 🤙
YES !!!!
Great review, would like your opinion please bud.
I’m in the UK, riding beach breaks and the occasional point break, mainly 2-6ft, also the wave pool on the highest settings.
Level of surfing is advanced, been surfing 38 years, at 53 I’ve put on a bit of timber at 110kg. Only ever use one board for where I live, never have multiple boards and never have, normally have my boards made for me by a local shaper so not used to buying out of the rack, but really fancy a JS. The issue is do I go 6’4 Xero in easy rider dims or 6’6 Xero gravity in easy rider dims, both are around 45 ltrs and would be in the Hi Fi 2.0. Your opinion would very welcome please bud?
Hi mate
How tall are you?
@@WoolyTV I’m 5 ft 11
@@WoolyTV ??
@@MarkDavies-m5n sorry, I missed your reply. I would go the go the easy rider DIiMs so it’s shorter
@@WoolyTV im confused, please read original message again, it would be the easy rider dims in both, the choice is which model to go for?
Great video mate. Thanks for the review!!
You’re welcome 🤙
Just got this in carbotune, flat spell so haven’t surfed it but I hope the tech and the board are sick!! Can’t wait to sink my rails into it 👍
You will love it. The Xero Gravity in Carbotune is my favourite board at the moment.
@@WoolyTV can't wait for the review, noting you have been subject to the same flat spell as me! WA summer conditions ever guna end... : )
When is the carbotune review coming ? Also have you got your hands on a fusion yet ?
@@ryansmith9283 Carbotune is finished and will be up in the next week. Yes I’ve had one surf on the Fusion.
@@WoolyTV legend thanks mate what’s your initial thoughts on the fusion ? Much different to the xero ?
Out of all the reviews I’ve watched you do that board looked the best under your feet. Especially on the rights.
Thanks mate. Yea it did go great and I’m using it in most surfs at the moment and I keep getting it even more dialed! 🤙
Trying to decide between Xero gravity and Dom 2 what’s your thoughts ?
I would go the Xero Gravity. Very versatile board that will work from waist high to overhead. 🤙
Been on the fence looking for a board to up my surf game for a while. This convinced me to go buy it! Hoping it complements my other board when the surf gets better
It’s a cracker of a board 🤙
Great show Wooly.
I ended up pulling the trigger on this today, because of this review!
Not trying to have buyers remorse… But I have a Pyzel Phantom in the same dimension (round tail/quad); which I love for the speed and how userfriendly it is.
Could you see both of these staying in the quiver, and working alongside each other? And if so, how would you consider using them. I.e) Phantom and quad/round tail and XG as standard thruster.
Or… If there is too much overlap, which would you hold onto/sell? And is there much of a difference to the two boards?
Cheers
Hi mate
Thanks 🙏
I haven’t ridden a Phantom but from what I understand they would work great in good quality waves and maybe not works so well under head high?
I think you will find the XG to work well in waist high to over head surf.
I have a good habit of holding onto my boards until I have ridden the new one, even if it’s the same model and size.
I like to make sure my new one goes as good or better than the previous one before I sell it.
Hold them both and work out what waves they both perform best in. 🤙
@@WoolyTV thanks Wooly. Appreciate you coming back so promptly on this, you’re a legend.
The Phantom a round tail/quad. So was thinking of running it like that to go straight. Whilst use the XG as a thruster/squash. Haha if you’re review wasn’t so strong, I wouldn’t of had the rubber arm to buy the XG!
Appreciate all you’re doing with the content. It’s brilliant work!!
Cheers
Sweet , thanks for the review!
Glad you liked it 🤙
yewww thanks wooly !
You’re very welcome 🤙
And another one. Great show 👏
Glad you enjoyed it!
I need that board!
It’s a good one!
Any chance of an LSD chubby cheddar 2 review?
Hi mate
Sorry not on the radar at this stage.
Epic surf 👌
🙏🤙
Hi WOOLY, for my xero gravity in easy rider, it didn’t like windy, slow mushy waves and even when there was a pocket, it was more snappy and didn’t want to carve in the weak stuff. Also when I was outside the pocket, felt like the hand break was on. Not an everyday driver for the waves I surf.
Hmmmm not every board works for everyone. Also really depends on the waves you surf.
For the waves I surf regularly it went really well. You can see on the fat left I was surfing it went well through the dead sections and even in the waist high beach break it performed.
Maybe the standard Xero might be a better option for you 🤙
Looking super sharp there 🤙🔥💪. How do you decide on what boards to stick on given you test soo many?! 🤔
Its always hard! I try not to hold onto any board that I havent ridden for 6 months - except my big wave boards as I can sometime only ride them for a few weeks every year.
Best for a daily driver xero gravity, P2, or inferno 72?
I haven’t ridden the Inferno but the Xero Gravity wins of the P2 for me.
