- The 1996 national convention of the Teen Association of Model Railroaders was held in Anderson, Indiana. One of the highlights was a special tour of Amtrak's Beech Grove Shops, originally built by the New York Central. Among the sights are Amtrak 506 (Dash 8) getting an overhaul, an F40PH being converted to a "cabbage," and a variety of wrecked cars and locomotives.
RIP Amtrak F40s :(. I see them every day on Metra, but i wish Amtrak still used those great engines. Breaks my heart to see them become NPCU's :'(
its better then being cut up pieces of metal
Love all that power
That's some crazy stuff in those shops!
This was filmed on the day I was born!
Wow! It doesn't seem like it was very long ago to me. But the kids in the video have kids now.
Cool video!
Thank you!
2:21 "AMD-103" I hardly ever hear that being used to describe P42s!
6:29 why did amtrak acquire this c&NW dome car fomr their executive fleet? It's not the dome Amtrak currently uses!
7:06 so amtrak made those rebuilt baggage cars from coaches, not older baggage cars like I thought.
7:53 the only viewliner diner until 2016! Now there are 17 of them!
8:36 consider yourself lucky that you got to see turboliners! One was moved in January 2018!
9:12 even the front loader was in phase III! amazing!
10:34 althought 811 eventually returned to service, it is now back in Beech Grove It probably last ran in 2005!
10:54 nice to see a GP40 for passenger work before it was converted to an NEC work train GP38H-3!
11:28 that engine looks good in that livery! too bad no passenger locomotive had it!
I'm glad you shared this video of Beech grove from nearly 20 years ago! Back then, trains from 1970s were still running in their original liveries!
Hi, I'm so happy you like the video and enjoyed what's in it. I'm so grateful to be able to take that tour. I think "AMD" was Amtrak's designation, "AMtrak Diesel 103 MPH" and the later version was AMD-110, but by then nobody was saying "AMD." Ah the dome car was so cool to see in that state. Amtrak rebuilt it under contract for the State of North Carolina. Yes the single-door baggage cars were coaches and sleeping cars. I love Viewliners. We have only the baggage cars out west, though.
I see the Viewliner diner prototype, in which I ate breakfast in 1990 on the Capitol Limited!
do you happen to know what the engines were that we being turned into cabbages?
For sure, they were all F40PH units. Some of them already had the engine removed, like Amtrak 225.
@@jreichel1 Specifically which numbers, hmmm can't tell.
Wow, FEMA Camp Huh? bullshit 😂😂
