    Best tutorial ever! I was about to sell one of these because my brain started to melt every time I opened the manual, but as I googled to find out what it's market value was, I came across your tutorial and I'm now buzzed about using it! Have had it in a box for maybe about 5 years or more. I got this machine because it could be used with AA batteries, and so was very portable. I now have the confidence to make use of it! THANKYOU!

To hear it's potential check out my Easy Listening Instrumental video. Great tutorial but one thing I always struggle with on drum machines is adding intermittent "fills" that sound natural. You should do a tutorial on that - or is the answer you just don't bother with that with a drum machine?

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  4 роки тому +5

      To get a drum machine to sound natural when you're recording a song, you definitely need to put fills in. The trick is to think like a drummer. Make sure to take the hi hat out or ride out when doing a fill. Also, adjust the pad sensitivity so there are dynamics. Put the fills in when changing from verse to chorus, chorus to bridge, etc. Check out my song Plenty 17, I did that with the Zoom MRT-3: ua-cam.com/video/QFSuFXeuZ-E/v-deo.html and also check out the first song, Three Get Down, on my Easy Listening Video. That was done with the Zoom MRT-3 too. Listen to the dynamics of the snare, especially on the fills, and the little ghost strokes in there. I also like to put a bit of reverb on the track to give it a live room feel: ua-cam.com/video/_Qj4KwE1AfM/v-deo.html Most of that whole Easy Listening video was done with the MRT-3. Some tunes I just blew over with one pattern, but others I did fills and changes.

      If it was there yesterday after you shut it off and went back to it, it should still be there. Make sure it's not something simple that you're overlooking... make sure you're in the song bank... make sure you're on the right number song... the only way to get rid of a song is to hit the erase button. Hope it's still there.

    Hi Steve, this is a great video. I had one of these 15 years ago, and recorded some demos with my four track tape recorder, and since moved on to using EZ Drummer. However there were certain kits that I liked on this and I'm thinking of purchasing one again to use with Reaper. I've noticed that you have done some recordings with it at the end of this video. Is it possible to record and use this drum machine with a DAW Software like Reaper for example?

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  5 років тому

      Hey Jack- All the recorders I've used it on were stand alone recorders like the Zoom R16 or Boss Br-8, you can see how I used it here at the 2:20 mark: ua-cam.com/video/n_44S76OPYQ/v-deo.html but you should be able to use it with any DAW. The premise would be the same but you won't have the editing like you would with EZ Drummer. Also, you'd most likely have to look to ebay to find one. I actually have 2 of them and the last one I bought I had to get off ebay as they can't be found in stores anymore.

      So you can't record a pattern or make a song? If it's not working right you can try to restore it to factory settings. To restore to factory settings do this... with the unit off, hold down the REC button. As you hold down the REC button turn the unit on. You'll see Init on the screen. Hit REC again and the unit will return to factory default condition. Don't know if that'll help, but it's something you can try.

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  Рік тому

      The pattern should save automatically after you record it and should be there even after you shut the unit off. You could try to restore the unit to factory settings. If you do this though it will erase any patterns that you created. To restore to factory settings do this... with the unit off, hold down the REC button. As you hold down the REC button turn the unit on. You'll see Init on the screen. Hit REC again and the unit will return to factory default condition.

    hey, i just bought a used mrt3b used from musicgoround and it didnt come with a manual. i am having an issue where when i try to record in a user bank after pressing rec and then play the screen displays a "0" instead of a countdown. and when trying to record pattern it only lets me record one hit at the first beat of each measure. so it is useless. can anyone help me with this?

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  3 роки тому +1

      Sorry you're having trouble with it. Check the user patterns and see if they're all full. If the previous owner recorded on all the user patterns the memory is full and you'd have to erase the patterns. If that doesn't work, you can try doing a factory re-set on it and return it to the factory default condition by initializing it. Here's how you do that: Start with the power off- then hold down the REC button while turning the unit on- the display will show "Init"- press the REC button once more and initialization will take place and the Zoom will be reset to factory settings. Hope that works for you.

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  3 роки тому

      First let me ask you this... does any pattern play? For instance, if you have it on pattern A1 and hit play, does it play? If you're not getting anything I'd suggest restoring it to the factory settings. If you do this though it will erase any patterns that you created. To restore to factory settings do this... with the unit off, hold down the REC button. As you hold down the REC button turn the unit on. You'll see Init on the screen. I have 2 Zoom MRT-3s and never had a problem with saving patterns. Once the pattern is recorded it's saved in the unit automatically.

    Steve...I watched and did the same thing to make a song like you, but How can you make the song Longer in length? Like endless Loop (the recorded song) and I will shut it off when I want the end I do, again length wise? Also does the song automatically get Saved in the song section? I had my Zoom stored for like 7 years and just took it back out but forgot how to use it. Thanks for this Great learning Video!! I actually bought a Korg Volca Sample, and it's too hard for me to use...learning it all and confusing. That's why I went back to the Zoom. I wanna use this with my Tascam 4 track recorder (cassette) and my Keyboards, recording music. The preset drums on the keyboards themselves, dn't do any justice Vs the Zoom.

      @stevekonbass  5 років тому +2

      The only way you can do an endless loop is if you just use a pattern. A pattern will just keep looping until you stop it. If you create a "song", there's a limit. And yes, when you create a song it is automatically saved.

      @@stevekonbass okay thank you Steve for the info! So when you play songs in your band you have to make the song long enough in the drum machine so you could finish the entire song, correct? So how do you make the song long enough with the drum machine to the length you want of the beginning and ending of the song?

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  5 років тому +2

      There are two ways I can answer that... if my duo (Sandal Foot) is doing a song where we want to jam and kill time, I'll just play a pattern and keep it looping. When we end the song I'll hit the foot switch that I attach to the drum machine and it will stop the loop. Now if I want a song to have a 4 count in the beginning, a verse, chorus, bridge, solo, and an end, then I'll just create a song as I did in this video. If you pick up the video from around 16:20 I show how to do that. The song I created for this video, which was just a short example, only used 12 steps, but you can have up to 99 per song. Don't forget you can also choose how many bars each pattern you create can be. That combined with 99 steps is plenty for just about any song start to finish.

      Thanks Steve, that helped a lot with my foggy brain these days, the info you gave. I don't see any other videos on here with the much needed detail you give on this machine! I watched the video several times already as I learn this....and I am sure I will watch it more. Thanks again Steve!

    Is there a way I can fix my MRT3B if the metronome does not come on (when recording a Pattern) nor does it cycle through the bars? Mine displays Measure 01-1 and never changes.. any ideas how to resolve this? Thanks in advance

    • @stevekonbass

      Sorry bro. The only thing I can think of is to make sure the Kit light isn't on. If you're in the kit section it won't let you record a pattern. Or, maybe you reached capacity with the memory. If that's the case you'll need to erase some patterns. Aside from that I'm stumped.

      @stevekonbass  5 років тому

      Sorry to hear that. The manual doesn't say anything about that in the trouble shooting section. You can try to reset it to factory default condition, but if you do that you'll lose all the user patterns and songs you already have saved on it. To reset it to factory default start with the unit off. Then hold down the REC button while turning the unit on. "Init" will appear on screen. Hit REC once more and the unit will return to factory settings. This might not solve your problem, but it's something you can try. Hope it works for you.

    Hi Steve, Great tutorial!
    HELP: Your advice please: I'm a technophobe so please bear with me. I am struggling to create a song. I have the three parts to the song under separate User locations i.e. Intro, Verse/Chorus and End. I am copying the individual parts into the song but when I play back its playing the 4 beat intro twice and also the ending Crash twice - I'm sure there is a simple answer??

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Vaughan. Sounds to me like somehow the intro pattern got inserted twice and the end pattern got inserted twice so all you'd have to do is delete those extra patterns. Try this... pull up the song and hit the step/record button 2 times. The screen should say 02. Then hit the delete/erase button. That will remove the second intro pattern that you don't want. Then you can do the same thing for the end.

    Hello again. Would you recommend this product still, or are there better ones out there? I like the size of the Mrt-3, its ease of use, and options too. I ask because I found several on ebay no adapters though 🙂

    • @stevekonbass

      Hey there. I personally love the Zoom MRT-3. I use it for recordings and I've also used it for live performances with duos. I'll put some links at the end of this reply that you can check out so you can actually hear it used in different situations. People have moved away from drum machines and gone the way of drum software. The software is great, but I still like using a drum machine. The Zoom MRT-3 might be hard to find new, but like you have found, you can find them on ebay. It can run on batteries or you can buy an adapter if the seller doesn't give you one. An adapter is the better way to go. Alesis also makes a drum machine and you can probably buy one new. I owned one of those too. It was easy to use and visually looking at the screen it was easy to understand, but I'm not a fan of Alesis products. You don't have a lot of choices if you want to buy a drum machine, but yeah, I think the Zoom is great. Here are some links you can check out... on this track you can hear the subtleties of the hi hat and kick, which is good because you don't want the hi hat and kick to be in your face: ua-cam.com/video/WAQYkeE2Yvk/v-deo.html
      .... here's another where you can hear some cool tom fills, ride bell, and crashes: ua-cam.com/video/IjBWKSZ-mf8/v-deo.html
      .... and here's a live situation with a duo, the footswitch was useful for starting and stopping: ua-cam.com/video/mqANlYi5KMs/v-deo.html

    Just picked one of these up used and I can play live beats on it happily, but I can't seem to get it to record & play back patterns yet. Am hoping this video will clear some things up for me, but I've run into a red flag already - when I press play on a pattern, it does nothing (screen doesn't change beat, no lights, no sound). I'm hoping it's a weird setting or fixable problem, not a sign that my machine just doesn't work. If anybody has some advice for me on how to get that up and running, it'd be super appreciated!

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  4 роки тому

      Sorry you're having troubles with it Jessica. Try pressing "Pattern" and then use the + or - buttons to scroll to one of the "pre-set" pattern banks. Those will be A1-99, B1-99, C1-99, and D1-99. So pull up any pattern in banks A, B, C, or D and then press play. If it doesn't play then there's a problem. You can try doing a factory re-set on it and return it to the factory default condition by initializing it. Here's how you do that: Start with the power off- then hold down the REC button while turning the unit on- the display will show "Init"- press the REC button once more and initialization will take place and the Zoom will be reset to factory settings. Hope that works for you. If it doesn't play after that I'd suggest you return it.

    How do the pads feel & handle finger drumming?

    • @stevekonbass

      The pads have different sensitivity settings so you can adjust them to how hard or soft you hit the pads.That really helps to getting your patterns to sounding real.

    • @stevekonbass
      @stevekonbass  3 роки тому

      Well, if you hear the playback of what you created, and then it's gone after you shut the unit off and turn it back on, you might have a bad machine. Any pattern or song you create should be there when you turn it back on. Make sure when you turn it off you shut it off by using the on/off switch on the unit and not shutting it off from a power strip or wall switch. Other thing you might want to try is resetting the unit to factory default. If you do that you'll lose what you recorded, but it sounds like it's not saving for you anyway. To restore to factory settings do this... with the unit off, hold down the REC button. As you hold down the REC button turn the unit on. You'll see Init on the screen. Hit REC again and the unit will return to factory default condition.

      Well, there are newer more modern ways to get sampled drums sounds, but off the top of my head, there are about 60 kits to choose from in this machine and the pitch of each drum can be tweaked. It's kind of funny that drums can sound dated, but you're right, they can.
