One Man’s Alpine Awakening

- What would it take for you to follow a dream?
Impossibly small, light, fast, and loud, Alpine sports cars have excelled at just about every form of motorsport they were entered in, but especially rally, and hillclimb competition. The cars are unlike anything else-and are just the thing to inspire a man to restore them…many of them.
“Sometimes, when stepping into my garage, and looking at my cars, I am surprised that it is already 30 years and the Alpine hasn’t worn out yet,” says Jürgen Clauss, founder of alpineLAB, a German shop that specializes in these small French sports cars.
“I still like to look, drive, and work on these cars every day,” he says, “To me, it was always unique, always something special; you even had to have certain ergonomic prerequisites to drive an Alpine.”
Dedicated to getting the details right during preservation and restoration, Clauss says that he sees something special in each component of classic cars, but especially an Alpine. “To me, each and every part is a sculpture on its own,” he says. “You just have to open your eyes and see the beauty of those parts (and) to be passionate about this hobby, even without a finished car.”
What started as a hobby and collection based around street versions of the Renault-powered Alpine A110, Clauss now focuses on the race cars. It’s been a long, 3-year relationship with the marque, which invariably led to him being somewhat poetic when explaining his passion.
“Owning an Alpine is quite like a relationship with a beautiful woman: Somedays, it’s exhausting, but in the end, it’s all about maintaining the passion, highlighting her beauty, and loving her.”
We couldn’t agree more. You can visit Jürgen’s website at alpinelab.de (www.alpinelab.de)

"The french had the idea to wrap two lying men in fiberglass and put them on wheels"
That´s the best description of the Alpine I´ve ever heard - priceless!
When I was a student in Paris in the early '90s, I got to become friend with Youri Cheinisse who was my neighbor. He was also a student and we were living in some "chambres de bonne" at the 7th and top floor of an Haussmannian building in the 17th arrondissement. Youri is the son of Jacques Cheinisse who led the Alpine racing team to its zenith in the 70s. Youri invited me to his wedding in the South of France and his father was there, with all the pilots who wrote Alpine's history, such as Jean-Pierre Nicolas etc. All very nice and simple people. For a few hours, I was immerged in the legend, at the occasion of a very happy event. What a nice memory!
Happy man!
What a moment in your life! Awesome. Came to the US from France a week before my 2nd birthday. Grandfather owned an ESSO station outside of Nancy. It was a little village called minil- flin. My uncle Jean Pierre rallied. Saw pics of his dauphine after totaling when he hit a cow. I remember his gordini. First saw an alpine on a hill climb time trial. Renaults are a pain to work on but ❤them. We have a traction-avant in the garage. Dads favorite.
Memories are great.
One of the greatest sports car ever created in my opinion.
and one of the most beautiful
Totally agree!!
Agree, I would also like to add the lancia stratos in there
Tied for first is the Willys Overland Interlagos
the sound...THE SOUND!!!!
I never thought it sounded this good.
***** OMG yes! This sounds reminded me of "Course de cote" (Uphill races) on Sundays in the Alps. So many Alpine 110 racing, and that sounds... get me to the bones.
***** Even better from the inside :)
+Lt Col Speirs Definitely, my first thought was about that glorious sound
+Lt Mojo Risin If I`m not mistaking it has a Gordini Engine.... :)
It reminded me of that French film, "C'était un rendez-vous".
How can people dislike these videos? Jealousy? Another great video.
Jealousy is the right answer yes! Stupid people !
The 6 people who disliked it probably haven't hit puberty yet lol
XLPCX Agree! it's disgraceful that people ''dislike'' these videos, can't they see the hard work and passion people put into keeping these gems on the road? It would be a lot easier for fellows like this guy to buy houses, shares or gold with their money, instead of keeping motoring history on the road for us to enjoy.
XLPCX Trolls!
Manuel Rdz. Totally! there are people who literally do nothing but sit and downvote videos all day.....................whatever float your boat I suppose.
Started reading the subtitles, then realized "hey, I speak German, why am I reading the translation??"
Haha same here :)
😂😂😂
haha! that's funny
The lines of this car... oh my gawd.
I give you a thumb up for the nickname and the profile picture
So many people forget about the incredible performance cars France has produced!
One of the best films you guys have ever done, even if it was all in German!
Alfred Munkenbeck must be hard to live with a german name and such a bad attitude towards german language at the same time.
Sferaristi What bad attitude?
TommyPlouffe Yep, that's pretty much it.
Sferaristi Yeah bro he doesn't have a bad attitude. He complimented the video despite the fact that he had to read the whole time.
Chad Andersen I seriously don't get this aversion that many US people have against subtitles. It's not like it's actually hard to read them and still enjoy the video.
The most underrated channel on youtube. period.
Petrolicious can understand the passion we feel for the machine. And show it artistically.
Petrolicious, please, never change! :')
that didn't age well
Thank you for this beautiful tribute to the Berlinette! The proof that the passion for Alpine goes beyond borders!
Stunning images enhanced by a high quality soundtrack. A beautiful report by enthusiasts. Merci beaucoup Monsieur Clauss!
Wow! Incredible collection of Alpines. 😎👍 When I first started watching, I assumed he had just one and a collection of other makes of classic cars and the Alpine was his favourite! When I saw his collection, I was so surprised they were ALL Alpines, not just road cars but racing and rally cars . Really special collection and what a passion for the Alpine!
I remember seeing an Alpine for the first time, growing up in the 1970s, I remember thinking how special they were, like nothing else on the road at that time, every other car had square angles and straight lines, the Alpine looked like it had been sculpted, like a piece of art as Claus mentioned in the video. 😎👍
Love the ending: "My name is Jurgen Clauss......and I have a weakness for Alpines." lol
Price of Freedom bad translation he sad he has a passion for alpines
Oh okay... I guess it made it more dramatic anyway haha
i think the sound of german language contrasts so well with the romantic way he speaks about his cars. like you'd never expect it, but it's great

have a soft spot for alpines ... or not? Aber wie die Alpine auf der Straße liegt - im wörtlichen Sinne, den Hintern leicht hoch macht - grandios!
The quality of these videos is amazing. Every time I watch an 'episode' I am filled with joy! The noise of this Alpine is insane, it looks fantastic with all the details. What a cool guy!
Dear Jurgen,
Thank you for your passion and keeping these fabulous cars on the road.
Prost !
Fantastic work, Mr. Clauss! Without people like yourself these treasures of the road would be rotting somewhere. They need to be driven and the restoration is truly beautiful! I had a small car model of an Alpine as a kid, even back then it was my favorite car. There is just something magic about them.
This video saved me from a very bad day! Jürgen Clauss and the entire Petro team, thank you!
This is literally my first time seeing an Alpine and holy crap, what a beautiful machine. Great sound they make too. That rear end is one of the prettiest I've ever seen.
Ooohhhh this is the best video yet.... but then I watch another one and think, hmmmm nooo, this one is really the best. Then on the next day they release a new video and I'm like, damn this is definitely the best.
I just can't decide, I love them all so much... Thanks for these jewels.
It's amazing the sophistication of each video you guys make. Congratulations, you're unique.
BEAUTIFUL CARS ~ ALPINES ARE STUNNING
Danke Herr Clauss. Wunderschöne Fahrzeuge.
Respekt vor diesem Mann 👍 👍 👍
The sound makes me smile
Legendary car, awesome guy, fantastic video, Petrolicious realy is on of the best car themed channels on youtube, keep doing what you're doing, its absolutely awesome.
i have recorded the car's sound between 1.50 and 2.30. And i am listening it when i feel bad. makes me feeel so good that i can't explain here :)
We need more people like this to respect and preserve automotive history for the next generations. I applaud this man for being so enthused that he can't get away from it. Nice garage, I'm stupid jealous.
Here in switzerland you can find the alot of Renault Alpina enthusiast, strong love for this car.
Just bought a 1600S and fulfilled my dream... 6 years after watching this video for the first time!
Wonderful to see what Jurgen Claus accomplised during his life. Even better to see he isn't finished yet. Thank you Petrolious! Cinematography/soundtrack tip top!Cheers, Dr.c.
Wonderful exhaust note. Many thanks and excellent review.
One of the greatest cars ever, fantastic.
Just gonna pop in and say that the Campagnolo crank was absolutely gorgeous. Wish I had that on my Pista!!
And the Eddy Merckx frame is lovely too. Ugo De Rosa built all the Merckx-branded frames while Eddy was still racing.
i also noticed how nice that bike was
I've been waiting for a video on the Alpine for forever. My most favorite car. Great work guys
Those shots were really amazing! Thanks
Danke Jürgen :) Kannte Alpine bislang überhaupt nicht, kann aber sehr gut verstehen, was man an den Autos so faszinierend finden kann.
I just come back to this video again and again to watch the intro. With the music it is just so beautiful... almost brings a tear to my eye. perfection
Yet another outstanding Petrolicious production. Jurgen, the cars look unbelievable. I am so happy with the A110 1600S you found for me, it is more than I ever expected the car to be. Great job with the video, hope to see you soon.
They've stuck with their signature 'lightweightedness' in their new and reborn A110. It's one of the most beautiful cars ever made and in my opinion, the pinnacle of performance cars.
true, when I was a kid, I wanted all of my family to shrink so we could all fit in an A110. The A310 was also a very very beautiful car, slightly roomier..
I'm so proud to be French when i see this, thanks petrolicious and Jürgen :-)
What a beautiful video! What a machine! Fabulous!
That engine noise gave me goosebumps! Beautiful machinery!
I've been waiting for you guys to do a video on the A110 and let me just say the wait was quite worthwhile, loved every second.
one of my favourite cars.
your best work yet guys! adored the style of cinematography.

I admire your passion about the lovely Alpines.Great rally cars specially in my favorite Rally Acropolis-greedings from Greece!!!
Beautiful cars, enjoyed video thanks for sharing
Love it !!! thank you !!!!!!!!!!!!Jurgen Clauss you the man !
One of my favorite cars of all time...how I'd love to drive one someday!
No matter how cool you think this guy is, I can assure you you are wrong; he is much cooler than that, and a true inspiration! :)
Best Petrolicious yet, what a beautiful car and that exhaust note, wow, simply Wow !!
I have worked with Renault in Malaysia previously and I am thrilled to understand the passion created by the Alpine, my dream car. Thank you for the feature of these wonderful cars.
Wow just perfect, the sound, the quality just amazing. Great video.
The sound of the car after its started and pulls away, those sounds are pretty much specific to a vehicle with a carburettor. Unique. The way you sometimes have to fettle the accelerator as you drive off, when it's been a while since you've driven it. It's old technology, but it has its charm. And it doesn't take too much effort to learn how to fix and repair your own vehicle when it doesn't have computerised aids. Its a pain at times, but it is rewarding, you do end up forming a bond with your vehicle, you know the sounds it makes when it's running well and the sounds it makes, or doesn't, when it's not.
I thought I'd seen immaculate before. This guy takes it to another level!
These are some of the best classic auto videos on the internet... the sounds, imagery commentary..., god damn
Well done, Petrolicious
I almost cried... superlative, Petrolicious
Owning an Alpine is quite like a relationship with a beautiful woman: Somedays, it's exhausting but in the end, it's all about maintaining the passion, highlighting her beauty, and love her.
And then a tear comes out from my eye 💘
pure bliss! very nice video. thnx for sharing this.
What a great report! Great story, beautiful filming, very appropriate music. Awesome finished product. Congratulations.
It's a joy, as usual, to see yet another car in the spotlights.
Thank you.
The most beautiful thing I've ever heard
Unreal. The quality of this video is breathtaking. Well done.
Lovely film about a lovely car. True passion!
amazing Jürgen... thank you...
My favourite videographers made a video about my favourite cars restored by the best name in the Alpine world... Hats off to you Petrolicious, to say that you made my day would've been an understatement.

The A110 is a killer car, both in looks and sounds, and this video captured it perfectly.

I have seen this video many times, but it still gives me shivers. So beautiful, especially from 6:46
That race version is stunning. Most beautiful can I've ever seen.
Such passion and so beautifully filmed... amazing.

ein wirklich toller Film.. Ich liebe dieses Auto seit Kindertagen als mein Vater damit ankam und mich damit zur Schule fuhr, es gab niemals etwas vergleichbares
